In creative mode you dont need to use any tools, everything is a one hit. But you were using a pickaxe for dirt. A shovel is for dirt/gravel. Pickaxe is for cobblestone; when youre mining and such, an axe is for wood and a sword is for killing. People usually make their houses out of wood and the pretty pink wood youre reffering to is from cherry blossom trees

btw the planks are wood so if you want its cozy you can make it cherry planks on it if you want
