David Wells also spanked Cleveland in game 1 of this 1998 ALCS. He also spanked Cleveland in game 3 of the 1997 ALDS in Cleveland. David Wells was so filthy against left hitters that Cleveland sat Jim Thome in game 3 of the 1997 division series, and Thome hit 6th against Wells in games 1 and game 5 of the 1998 ALCS. David Wells had the best curveball I have ever seen on a left-hand pitcher; better than Zito and better than Kershaw.
It's hard to say. The regular seasons in 1999-2000 it was probably a wash, same basic production from either guy. Playoffs, who knows? Wells was to some extent more consistent - he never got pounded but never dominated, either. Clemens would get clobbered (those Oakland games and that Boston game) and then absolutely dominate (Seattle, Mets, Braves). 2001 you'd definitely take Clemens. Plus the Yankees opponents in 1999-2001 were better than in 1998. But in the end, winter of 1998 Clemens was coming off consecutive Cy Youngs and Wells was a very good pitcher but he was never elite.
David wells tipping his cap while getting booed is the most David wells thing ever
love his delivery, so smooth and consistent. That curve ball is filthy too!
One of the best curveballs of the 90s (if not THE best)
Definitely the best 12-6 curve.
@@KTF0Barry zito?
He was fun to watch. Fun curveball.
*His curveball was extra sick that night.*
Ya I miss my god damn friends and I pick them

Dude's curveball was basically unhittable.
Never should have traded Wells. He was amazing. A great big game pitcher.
Clemens still helped the Yankees get two more championships in 1999 and 2000

Wells looks ugly in a different uniform like the blue jays, Padres, White Sox.
Torre hates him.
@@gf4670 Gimme a gamer who was never tied to juicing over Clemens any day of the week.
damn that curve
So much of that 1998 team's character was about that guy. I will never be a fan of the Yankees as much as I was that year.
💯
Rich Hill reminds me a lot of him. Both late bloomers, too!
1:07...that is UNHITTABLE. Babe Ruth couldn't hit that.

Yet they lost 4 game to 2.
