Who is here trying to get into plumbing?
Learn how to study plumbing better: ruclips.net/video/FKuh3x3OQDk/видео.html
Roger Wakefield Thanks for the video 👍
I suspect this is a long shot, but do you know of a resource to find plumbing courses that have been approved by state committee(s)? All I've found is one local technical college.
I wanted to but with a lack of high school diploma I'm stuck. New York requires it and with a family I don't have time to go back to school. thanks for your videos I'm hooked.
46 year old supervisor working in the tech industry here. A lifetime handyman on the side. Father of four that has suffered a desk job for too long. Currently studying to take math placement to apply for local union. Been watching your videos daily.
@derek nutt Not many out there, man. That's one of the biggest issues with trying to learn plumbing outside of the Union
I think one of the most important parts is treating school like its work. Show up on time and work hard. Don't skip days unless you really have to.
I just got into a trade school for plumbing, I’m 18. I’m just having trouble trying to understand everything because of my learning disability. I just got out of high school literally a month and now I’m here, it’s tough but I’m willing to understand everything as best as I can. I want to move past the learning disability and be able to learn how to be the best plumber I can be.
How its been so far lmk ur progress please
Just keep pushing keep trying to get better everyday just don't quit you can do it
People forget that Roger. When working through an apprenticeship you will get paid and when your in school EI will supplement your income. The thing that really messes my life up was the student debt I incurred at college and university. It took me decades to pay it all off and I had no credit. We really need to attract the next generations into the trades because we are really hurting for young people. The whole industry will benefit from videos like this. Great job Roger.
Thanks for the support, sir! You're right, we need more young people in this industry. I work outside of RUclips a lot to try to teach younger kids that there are more options than college.
@@RogerWakefieldhi Roger. I’m looking to become a plumber and I was wondering what is the best type of plumbing to start out in? Like would it be better to work in resi first or commercial? Thank you
@@Hondaguy82xl I think construction is a great place to start. Then try service after a couple of years.
@@RogerWakefield ok I’m definitely gonna give it a shot im already a construction worker but it’s on the electrical side of things and it’s just not for me
Hey roger I commented on Monday’s live about taking my test today just wanted to come in and let ya know I passed
THAT'S GREAT NEWS! Congrats!
Steven Whittington Congrats mann
Thanks guys
Congratulations 🎉
Just started my degree for plumbing in LA . Originally from Wichita Falls TX . Only female in my class ! Let’s go!
Way to go nicole! I'm starting in January. Best of luck to you!!
Good job ladies
LETS GOOO NICOLE ❤🔥🥶
Where are you now? I would love to know ❤️
They have degrees for plumbing?
I’m a 3rd year apprentice. I got into the union right away and starting on new construction high rises. Then when the buildings were complete i was transferred to the service side. Definitely building it 1st made it much easier to understand the service side of it. It’s a craft and i love it thank you for your knowledge always
Thanks man, I’m in a rough spot where I got put into the level one without any field experience and it definitely was an adventure.
Hey Rodger I commented on Monday's stream, I start my apprenticeship monday! Thanks for all the advice .
Just became an apprentice today but I’ve been employed for over a year now and am in the mood to learn all I need to learn about plumbing and by the way I’ve seen almost all your videos your awesome!
Just got hired at my hometown plumbing company as a helper and I credit your videos, like this one, for inspiration. Thank you for such good content. I will continue to watch your channel on my journey towards an apprenticeship, journeyman’s, and so on.
Pros and cons so far from what i heard and my experiences of trade
Pros:
you get on the job learning
Your mostly debt free
Benefits
You get high pay
Career growth in certain trades
You get a stable job/career
Lifelong skills
Career network expansion
Cons:
Low social life
Could take up 5 years
Limited career growth in some trades
Credits most of the time cannot be passed to college
You need a car
Or some sort of transportion
Pretty fast paced most of the time
Just Subscribed. Thank you for the great information. I've been in the automotive field my whole life and i'm over it. I find plumbing to be a great trade, interesting and i'm passionate about it. Will pursue a career in it.
Hey Roger Apprentice Plumber here. I love the information but hoping in the future you're able to put a transcript for the people impaired or if my baby is asleep and I'm learning 🤣🙏 thanks again keep up the work
I'm in a ma n pa shop rn. I've been studying my butt off reading and watching vidoes about plumbing. It clicked for me after spending 40 hours a week in the shop learning parts, fittings, pipes, tools, sizes of supply lines and angle stops, valves, and even electical, all while helping costumers on the fly as i studied. Took about 6 months. By then i was ready to begin working in the field as a 'helper' and im 8 months in now and doing most of my own calls. Greatfull for the opportunity to get paid and study at the same time. #learneveryday
Ur the reason I found what I want to do for a living thank you Roger.
This is good advice for any occupation. Study and improve.
These Videos are getting better and better! love the new set up Roger my guy
Thanks for the continued support!
starting school this year in sept. cant wait! thank you for the extra help! have a great day!
Good luck!!
Starting my apprenticeship Monday. I’m excited but I’m nervous as well. I’ve been in healthcare for 10 years and always have been interested in plumbing.
How’s it going
Yo dawg how’s the apprenticeship going
Word on it 5 months later?
I’m currently a 1.5 year plumbing apprentice and I’ve been enrolled in college for civil engineering for a year now and yes both career paths are extremely challenging, but profitable. It is possible to do both but you will have to sacrifice most of your time to one or the other.
Residential service is what I do and love it
I have never seen someone share info and education about their trade the way you have been doing. I was recently told by an inlaw that they know the president of the plumbers union and that they can get me in and after watching many of your videos I decided to accept the opportunity. sounds like a decent gig I am coming from a machinist background both conventional machines and CNC but none of those were union jobs.
Grew up with a master plumber as a dad. He's now a plumbing inspector. Gonna start getting into my apprenticeship ASAP
Thanks for making these awesome videos helping me find the trade of plumbing!
Glad to help!
The editing was excellent in this video, Roger! Thanks for all the great plumbing videos. I’m 20 and looking into plumbing as a serious consideration for a career. I appreciate all the hard work you put into Your channel, keep up the awesome work.
It's a great career! I'm glad I can be a resource for you. Good luck on your career decision!
Did you do it?
@@rawkingkong actually went into the HVAC field and got hired as a Jr tech for a pharmaceutical company, they have an in house maintenance department for HVAC, applied a while back and got my EPA universal along the way!
Congrats bro!
Thanks a lot! So much to learn its actually crazy @@nicholasphillips5406
Thank you 4 your advice
3rd week in and get home and watch RUclips plumping videos for an hour. I watch the good plumbers you tubes, but yours are ok.😂 Joking brother. Your channel is the best I found.
One thing to add...I have a bachelor's degree and no debt thanks to the Air Force. I still think I should have gone trade in the first place, even though I have no debt. College isn't for everyone and it especially isn't for recent high school graduates. Who knows what you want to for REST OF YOUR LIFE at 18?!
Rodgers, when I first started in this trade years go. I honestly did not learn much from my trainers. I felt like all they wanted me around for was to make them money. I had to learn everything on my own when I got in my own truck. Because they never took the time to teach me what was being performed.
Originally I want to be an architect. But it requires to much time and too much money until i begin to see results. So im thinking about doing plumbing in new construction , and eventually finding another path to architecture. I am interested not only in building homes but also infrastructure of a city or town. My plan is to one day design and build a town.
Thank you for your videos Roger. I’m leaving Teaching to enter Plumbing and am 100% behind the phrase “Study Plumbing “. Any Book Recommendations?
Oh the old school 70s pic was awesome sir👍🤣😎
I interview for the local 3 on Thursday and cannot wait to start this career.
Hows it going?
Started my apprenticeship this Monday. I love it already because it’s just service calls and I have to help my tech troubleshoot. Love your content dude!!!🎉
Happy to help! Good luck to you
Thank you sir!
I'm trying to figure out what trade is right for me. Can you make a video on what plumbing is like? The life of a plumber?
Hello Mr.Wakefield
Thanks for all your he great info and expertise.
I was wondering if you could recommend some great companies in the Houston area to start off with as an apprentice.
Thanks
33 years old. Software Manager with cushy work from home job. Not what it's cracked up to be! I just interviewed today to become a plumbing apprentice after doing a lot of research and I think I got the job!
Hello slightly younger me who left the IT world to pursue a trade. Did you reach out to plumbing companies and inquire about becoming an apprentice? I've been focused on the electrician side of the trades since leaving corporate but I think I want to go into some form of plumbing. Hope you got the position, or have had success since then.
@cordcd7 it did go well. I got the job with them a day later and have around 200 hours now as a plumbing apprentice.
@@TheDroc1990 awesome! Thanks for letting me know, I’m going to keep at it.
Software developer, I'm strongly considering this career.

Hey roger thanks for the videos. Your production style is on point. Which video is it were you talk about the UA
ruclips.net/video/HmBiQFMXBTk/видео.html Hope this helps
Roger Wakefield NICE
Man what a cool way to put all this. Im a button pusher at a machine shop im 31 years old and ive put myself deep into academic probation in college because of bad choices i made as a youngster and going back now doesnt seem feasible. And right now button lushing experience doesnt really open me up for job growth. Im good with my hands and im a great hands on learner with alot of drive. Feels like the career path that fits me! Again superb pointers and thank you for not putting down any of the other types of plumbing! Wish my luck and you have my subscription!
Maybe try and go talk to a counselor at that college and make some plans to get off academic probation.
Hey roger. Love the videos. These have been so helpful. I just recently decided I want to pursue an apprenticeship rather than continue college for 2 more years. I’m relocating to San Antonio in December. Any idea on how plumbing work is out there? Can’t wait to become a Texan!! Thanks soon-to-be neighbor!
Commercial Plumbing work has started to pick up!! It's an exciting trade and essential!!
I’m a 13 year old boy, who wants to work for my uncle for service plumbing, I want to do as much research as possible about how to do things because plumbing looks amazing to me, it would also be an amazing job for me to maintain
u will be rich. do it asap
Hi Roger, I’m in the Dallas area looking for an RMP class with the most bang for the buck; any you can recommend?
Found Pioneer out of Granbury and Winns in Irving. I’m in Terrell
Any insurance company leads would be greatly appreciated too
Thanks
A question I have with this job is will I still have time to enjoy myself . I've heard that your on call 24/7 and that kind off made me have my doubts I'm not trying to make this a life long career but it's just a job I want for a few to jump start my realestate career but yeah it sounds like a great opportunity I just don't want it to take over my social life
33 year old here and I’ve been sitting at a desk for 10+ years. Seriously considering making a move to more manual labor. Thanks for the video!
Did u decide
If you’ve got no experience and never done a labour job at 33 you’re going to struggle, but try and see if you like it for yourself.

@@benjamindelfs2718that is not true. I started landscaping at 32 on my own. Sure I was sore at first but if you are athletic and did any form of exercise throughout your 20s you'll be fine.
Basically for studying I asked my instructors to summarize each part of the book for me in a few short words on like what I had to do
M very interested to learn plumbing and build my serious career. How can I reach out your guide? Thank you
Another thing you got to know is to buy a wheel barrow for all that cash 💸 💸 💸😳😳😊
😂😂😂😂😂
Haha I have been plumbing for 2 years now and it took about a year and a half before I really started picking it up good on the job training is better than school because you see first hand how real situation’s are
Can I apply as a plumbers helper to get my foot into the door? Even if I have I have no experience?
@yeooo-_-2301 Yea, I just finished school and will be applying for "Entry level plumber," which is a "Plumber helper" or "Plumber apprentice"
Yup i do them all except union. Love breaking shit building shit. Repairing shit.
Hey Roger, I am feeling stuck in my career right now and looking into other fields of work and have always been interested in a trade job. I appreciate all the information you've been making for plumbing it's been giving me a good idea what to expect if I pursue this field of work. There's a company I am looking to apply for called Roto Rooter, it seems like from the employee reviews on indeed, you run your own truck and have to advertise yourself do you have any concerns about the type of plumbing company set up like this and also what type of advice would you give for working in a company like this?
Did you ever make the switch? I’m thinking of the same thing!
@@hughjanus3420 I too am making the switch into the trades. It's been a rough go trying to figure out which way to go but Roto Rooter seems the most friendly to those who are green. So many positions for apprenticeships want 1-2 years experience it seems counterintuitive. I'm about to find a local contractor and ask if I can be a helper or something.
Hey Roger, I’m currently a HS senior who wants to go into plumbing. I want to own my own business one day but I think the best training I can get is with the Union to start off with. Can I easily start Union, finish the 5 year apprenticeship and then create my own company when I’m ready? Thanks for the video.
I would highly advise it as an career since it's very lucrative and awarding. You being able to run your own company would depend on your plumbing jurisdiction regulations of your states
@Ethan Muniz is right. It's a great career and I applaud you for even considering it. Here in TX there's a lot of requirements to own your own plumbing company, but I know plenty of guys much younger than me that already have their own companies are doing very well for themselves. Good luck on the career and thanks for the support @D Adams
I love to be aplumber apprentice
Yo Roger!! How you doing today? I was wondering which "field" or style of plumbing would you consider to be the most difficult or challenging? Great vid man!!
They all have their own challenges that are unique. Commercial new construction has a lot of moving parts. Service you'll have to learn sales. So there's unique challenges for each. Thanks for supporting the channel!
I'm from INDY IM NEW TO LEARNING HOW TO PLUMB, WHAT IS THE STEPS I CAN TAKE TO START PLUMBING.
Definitely prefer the camera angle straight on. I prefer to look a man in his eyes.
Thanks for the feed back!
can u be able to switch union from one state to another?
Today I am fixing what new construction plumers built that's petty sad but I love my job
I didn't know I was a plumber but apparently I am. Haha I'm an oil burner tech and I have to mess with hydronic and hot water systems all the time
I was in the medical field for almost 20 years. I'm 42 now and I'm wanting to switch careers. I live in western Massachusetts and its difficult to find a plumbing school near me. Any advice on how to begin this journey of becoming a plumber? Thank you sir
I'm in a similar boat as you but 5 years younger and spent the last 10 in IT. Originally I wanted to become an electrician thinking it was somewhat related with what I did prior. However after job hunting for months now, I think I would like to do something like fire suppression systems. Not necessarily plumbing based, but many positions call for plumbing experience.
I'm fairly lucky to have a Lincoln Tech not far and as well an "alternative high school" that does adult education. All of the adult edu classes are for trades or similar skilled labor. Check your county, town or region for adult/continuing education classes.
Also Roto-Rooter looks to be the most friendly company when it comes to being an apprentice without any plumbing experience. I would look to them or even call your local plumbers and ask them if they'd hire an apprentice or helper who has plenty of professional experience but not plumbing.
I am a woman getting into the trades because my Dad is a skilled-trades man and has inspired me soo much! I am excited for my career change... any advice as a woman?
I would welcome any advice as well!
I completely lost it at the apprentice picture 😂😂😂😂
Any ideas what to do when union doesn’t have any work? Seriously thinking about going open shop. Need to put food on the table.
You gotta do what you gotta do! Keep that family fed, my man! In my area lack of work isn't an issue for the union, but it varies from state to state
Im a letter carrier and i wanna take up this trade and brick mason as well on the side 👍😎

The most profit is in retrofit or modification to plumbing in older houses. This is the area where you can come in and have the most opportunity to completely scam your customers out of their money. Most of the time you will be exposed to very simple ten minute jobs that you can charge thousands for. All you have to do is keep repeating licensed as though your some kind of government official who has the authority to charge whatever price you want.

you can start plumbing whenever you want...there is no age cap
its so funny, been a plumbing contractor 30 yrs.. what he is saying is deadon.. best way to learn the trade if you arent book learnable is join a plumbing construction company, if your brain is remotely math oriented you will quickly learn the trade probably 2 years while making better than the average wages.. once you're a journeyman self-employed or way better than average wages
