It's kinda crazy. To keep misleading. People. About self defense. With some of these styles Man. Smh
For all wondering, the guy doing monkey is a class act. Kind, polite, respectful, dedicated, and he's a friggen badass to boot. I was in the classes when he first started training using this technique and the video was recorded shortly after he became excellent at it. The class had a few who did the Monkey incredibly well but J-man there just put his name on the list. I am proud to see how he progressed. Man, I miss that whole group of students. Some were bartenders, some were youngsters, some were just friends with the instructors, some were bouncers, and many were Hollywood stunt performers. The instructor (1 of 2, actually) was the guy in the Spiderman suit after he enters the wrestling ring in the first Spiderman movie as well as the computer animation model for a very famous Kung Fu movie. The second instructor did great stunts, too. You may remember his role as Abe Vigoda's stunt double in the Betty White/Abe Vigoda Snickers commercial. But I digress. Great people, great skills, and great friends. I'm jealous of them all. haha

Hey people, most people never get in involved in a real fight situation and this kind of performance is not meant for that scenario.
All of what we call martial arts these days are far removed from combat and are practiced as a sport/performance art or a lifestyle .
Even sparring in most cases is sport fighting and heavily contained and controlled.
Just enjoy the talent and skill for what it is, incredible control over of the mind and body as these brilliant young athletes have demonstrated.

It's interesting how chinese martial arts all seem to have such strung theatrical elements. I've never really joticed that in the styles practiced by other countries

if we add some jiu jitsu to the monkey style and a bit of Muai Thai to dog style we might have some potential mixed martial arts that could be used on the street =) but leaving that tought aside, LOVED the demostration !! funny for the kids and awesome for martial arts lovers :)

What is shown here is contemporary Wushu. Traditional Kung Fu sets are not acrobatic routines with weak and flimsy attacks, and they do not imitate animal movements, but rather translate them into human movements that represent the spirit of the animal.

So how would monkey style be applied to a real life scenario where you're in a fight? From my limited research drunken boxing's viability as a method of self defense comes from the unpredictable nature of a practitioners movements, would the same be true of monkey style?
It seems a good majority of people don't really understand that this is just to show off their skill while putting a bit of entertainment in it for the fun of it.

zinov3 there’s more to martial arts than raw ability to maim another human being, especially when you’re talking about old traditional ones like monkey and dog. It’s a sport and an art form in itself, extricable from combat applications. You wouldn’t judge a gymnast by their fighting ability, would you?
