Been in the hobby 20 years and ha ave never tried this coral. When I stated they were considered extremely difficult but now not really but have had a hard time potting one that is healthy. Great video.
Gorgeous specimens (gonis). I just picked one up today from Petco actually. Looked very healthy no receding tissue and it was 24.99! It's like a wintergreen mint/soft green color. Can't wait for it to open up. Got some Reef Roids to target feed too once it does. Very nice looking tank too by the way! I see your Mandarin decided to make an appearance near the end of the video 👋🏻 hi.
Enjoyed the video. I have one that is being temperamental. I'm going to move it maybe it will help. I did get some mustick too. Happy New Year to you too!
Yea i traded a big colony of tticolor valida acropora. For a orange fungia plate and a red Goniopora. But i didnt know to ask the store owner to have him move the coral or use a turkey baster on it to make the polyps go in so i could see the skeleton. I got home and noticed 40% of the skeleton is dead. White. So fresh. But putting it in my 135g mid way in the tank to low to medium flow. Its polyps came out after 30 min. After 1 day its polyps are out about 1.2 inch now. Sooo hopefully it recovers.. Im kinda pissed he sold me a half dead one. I even called and mentioned it and he said nothing. So i plan to go to another store and get some coral food. My tank also has high nutrients. Some nitrates, some phosphates ect. My dirty tank is the reason why my bubble corals and other corals are so huge. I have a green bubble bigger than your flower pots combined. So hopefully feeding and because my tank isnt so clean. I dont use skimmers and stuff. Hopefully itll come back for me. I mean polyps out seems like a good sign to me
Your goni look amazing, I have a green that looks like yours and a red one which should look like yours but the polyps only briefly open from time to time. Do you ever have one that just sulks?. Since it cannot be the water parameters or lighting, would you recommend moving the red one?
Nice one Dutch .. quick question , when you say you feed mastic , your are not actually saying that you directly feed mastic to the Goniopora or are you ?
I just picked 1 of these up yesterday. Its quite big and only paid $10 for it in the bargain tank. Love the look of it white/pink. Its not as extended as it was in the LFS though, will it just take some time to adjust?
Hi Nic, oh that's a real bargain right there! It will take some time to adjust, likely a few days. If it doesn't then you might need to put it somewhere else in the tank. Medium flow and light will do them good!
Hey Dutch..... another excellent vid! I wanted to ask about your experience with keeping a CBB and a green Mandarin together.... do they compete for pods? I am setting up a 100G 48 x 24 x 20 and am considering a CBB as the focus fish but will have a mandarin as well. It will be a quiet tank. Your thoughts? Thx!
Thanks Matt! In my experience a CBB and Mandarin will work great together, I don't think that the CBB will be a threat to the pod population in your tank! Sounds good :-)
Don't know if this got sent, but please tell me the name of bright green coral at rear top left hand side -looking at the front of tank, its waving beautifully. what is the base substrate as it looks like crushed shell with some coral sand, you also have a nice yellow branching fan like coral at bottom front-what is it called. Whats the real way of knowing you are getting cultivated corals, don't taking from the wild. Brilliant illustrations of how much care, time and love love given the aquarium, 10/10 Tony -Salisbury, England . Only asking as upgrading to a new Red Sea MAX S 650 in March.
Hi Tony! The one you mean is a piece of Green Star Polyp (GSP), a very beautiful and easy to keep coral! The sand is crushed shell/coral and sand indeed, a mix of ATI Fiji White and CaribSea AragAlive. The branching fans are gorgonians, the one is a Muriceopsis Flavida and the other one Pseudopterogorgia Elisabethae. It's not always easy to know if a coral was grown/cultivated or captured in the wild, but with LPS you can safely assume that most are captured in the wild, same goes for large colonies of harder to keep SPS/Acropora.
@@DutchReefer, well that's a big shame as I'm TOTALLY AGAINST anything being taken rom wild / natural sources. People like you & MelsReef got the power to stop this happening and you'd gain so much praise globally fighting it and it wouldn't annoy the bank manager. At 73 with a bit of an MS type problem I'm hoping this'll all stop before I'm in a box,
Beautiful tank .great video. I currently have a purple goniopora in my coral qt. Seems healthy and extended but a real pain to feed. It retracts it’s polyps almost immediately even with the slightest amount of water pressure from the turkey baster. Anyway , can you say what your current nitrate and phosphate levels are ?
Thank you very much Brian! Yeah direct feeding isn't very effective, they do best with indirect feeding through the water column! My PO4 has been spiking from 0.4 to 0.6 but I have been able to bring it down to 0.15 while my target is 0.1 and NO3 is stable around 10 which is fine for me :)
sir u have magnificent tanks..but can i ask u..why some gonio i saw its have short polyp..but all ur gonio extended long polyp..i want gonio extend long polyp..does strong flow effect it?
Hey DUTCH REEFER, I have a green goniopora for about one month and has not extended its tentacles once. It is in a low light, low flow, and on its own island on the ground. What should I do???
I may have just screwed up. I bought 2 from an auction, and the polyps didint look real long and flwing like your but I just assumed as they grew they would get longer but since I have paid for thm I noticed smaler one with real long tenacles. I also saw there are reall y flat varietys as well. i am not vert experienced and discovered these arent that expensive anyway I mauy ask If I can trade for another coral. What can you tell me about them and which one have the really long tentacles like yours. I cant find anything online. Is there a certain anme to the longer gonis?
Hi Karen! Some have long tentacles, some have short, it's basicly based on the species which is kind of hard to identify. I have seen small ones get longer and the other way around. Generally the longer they are, the more healthy the coral is!
How's your refugium light holding up? Looking at options for my reefer 250 but sceptical about the light lighting up my whole sump like a kessil h80 so looking for alternatives
Yeah it can take weeks, even months for them to respond to different conditions so it's quite hard to get it right. Medium light and flow seem to do best for me at least!
There is no greater measure of success than consistent results over time. Nice reef!
Thank you Andy :)
Love these guys! That pink and yellow one is awesome!
Goniopora are my favourite I've had alot of them. 🎄🎀🎁🎄
Super fantastic video and corrals too sir...

Thanks Arrick! They are such nice corals to see, you should try one :-) the red ones like the big one I have should do best!
Yes they are beautiful
Thank you for your video I’ve gotten one and I want it to live
Looked great! Thanks for sharing your valuable experiences!
Beautiful video as always what a treat to watch thumps up buddy
Thanks Mo!
Just set up my 525 XL. Watching a number of them on RUclips.
Your's is amazing.
Thanks, you will have a great time with that tank!

Enjoyed the video. I have one that is being temperamental. I'm going to move it maybe it will help. I did get some mustick too. Happy New Year to you too!
Hmm yeah moving it could help, that's how I once save the pink one that's now fully recovered! Thanks!!
I love your videos, and would like to thank you with a hug and a beer.
That's very kind Mike, cheers!
Thank you for the video very informative!
Looking forward to more next year.
Happy New Year.
Thanks for the feedback, and I'll be back :-D cheers and thanks!
Awesome - been waiting for your take on the Goni ;) Lot's of great info - thanks ;)
Thanks Sunny, good to hear you liked it!
I just got one off these and is doing well in my tank. great video
That's great, have fun with it, you'll definitely love it :-D
What do you feed it? (Just got one)
All the best for the new year 👍
Thank you Mark, the same to you, have a great 2019!
Thanks for this great video!
Happy New Year Dutch God Bless you and your family and all the best for 2019✌ can't wait for the new focus Friday's 👍

Yeah they can be absolutely sulky, sometimes for days or weeks! If it keeps on being "sulky" then yeah you'd best move it or try at least something
Nice one Dutch .. quick question , when you say you feed mastic , your are not actually saying that you directly feed mastic to the Goniopora or are you ?
Good question Tas, indeed I'm not feeding it directly but it feeds on it from the particles that float around in the water!

@@DutchReefer how u bring your Po4 down? I have a low nutrients system but my PO4 is 0.6 I want to bring it down.
Thank you
I just having a Dutch reefer watching ur video😂
What are the pink and yellow fish in this video?
Amazing!!!
Solid.
I have the same brand of manganese but have no idea how much to dose and the method of introduction. I have a 180g. Can you tell me more specifics?
I have found manganese to be only mildly effective, if anything at all.. So I stopped dosing it!
sir u have magnificent tanks..but can i ask u..why some gonio i saw its have short polyp..but all ur gonio extended long polyp..i want gonio extend long polyp..does strong flow effect it?
Thank you! Lower flow will make the tentacles longer in general, so yes :)
Hey DUTCH REEFER, I have a green goniopora for about one month and has not extended its tentacles once. It is in a low light, low flow, and on its own island on the ground. What should I do???
Hmm that's not good! Give it a bit more light and flow, that should help! Also, if you have manganese lying around, try adding that :)
I may have just screwed up. I bought 2 from an auction, and the polyps didint look real long and flwing like your but I just assumed as they grew they would get longer but since I have paid for thm I noticed smaler one with real long tenacles. Just added a pink long polyp yesterday. How long does it normally take before it fully extends in a new tank if the parameters are right?
It could take weeks/months before it shows in full glory, but then again they are kind of hard corals to keep so keep a close eye on it!
How's your refugium light holding up? Looking at options for my reefer 250 but sceptical about the light lighting up my whole sump like a kessil h80 so looking for alternatives
The light has been doing well for months, but somehow after months of really great growth my chaeto died...
Nice video, What kind/name of the food you stuck to the glass?
I found it. Masstick 😀
Yes, that's the one!
What phone you rec this film
Wow my goniopora do not extend like that at all. They barely come out an inch. It has enough light im certain so maybe more flow will help
Yeah it can take weeks, even months for them to respond to different conditions so it's quite hard to get it right. Medium light and flow seem to do best for me at least!
do multiple Gonioporas can leave in the tank next to each other?
Yeah they do fine together!
Could you do a video of your sump and equipment?
Yeah I could do one of those again, last one is from last year :)
👍🏿💯
What is that circle stuck on the glass?
Its fish food some people stick it on the glass.
What type of sand are you using?
I'm using a mix of ATI Fiji White and CaribSea AragAlive
can goniopora touch Zhoa??
Most of the times yes :)
Masstick is the worst
Why though? I have been using it for years and it's perfect for all tank inhabitants, from fish to inverts!
