Awesome video! Thank you for sharing this with us! I can only imagine the explosive growth this tee gets in the spring with this much pruning done! Thanks again! 🍁

The seiryu in particular does push out an excessive amount of new growth. There are several other varieties that do have the same growth habits. I do have a comparison video as well of the seiryu container grown and the same garden grown tree that you have seen. You may find that one interesting as well

Do you ever use those clippings for propagating new trees?

Years ago when we operated our Japanese maple nursery on our property we would taking cuttings in late July / early August and then use them for grafting new trees. I do have a 4 part series on our complete grafting approach as well on this channel

      Thanks for the kind words!
As far as planting Japanese maples, as long as you do not have any severe frost and frozen soil you can plant into pots right now.
We visited New Zealand, north Island in March 2023, beautiful country. Rented a small camper van and had a fantastic time. Also noticed many varieties of Japanese maples thru out the island, especially in New Plymouth along the coast.
Your north island climate is very similar to our climate here on the south coast of BC

Hi there. Do you provide consulting services? Would be happy to compensate for advice on potted Japanese maples in Southern California. Thank you!

I too have a SEIRYU which I planted a few years ago. It’s currently 10ft tall, but I’m waiting for the pop in growth sometime soon. Does everybody see a 12” - 18” growth per season? Minus this pruning, any other suggestions to have a healthy tree? Thanks!!

The seiryu does put out multiple and rapid growth flushes in the garden. If you do not prune the tree and just let it grow it will take up a large space of the garden ( up to 15' in height) and you will also get plenty of natural die back due to the density of the foliage eventually.
