  • Clownfish like the Percula and Ocellaris are great first fish for your reef tank. They're colorful, they'll be out and swimming around most of the time, and they're easy to take care of. Clownfish make great additions to older tanks as well, and don't require anemones to do well. Breeding clownfish is also relatively easy compared to other reef fish and they make a great first fish for saltwater aquarium breeders as well.
    Clownfish care is almost as easy as it can get, even for beginners. This video gives a nice how to for you to follow - and I'd recommend a good quality dry pellet fish food like those made by New Life Spectrum or something similar. Your clownfish will also enjoy frozen foods, but avoid brine shrimp as they're not super nutritious though they make a nice snack for your anemonefish.

    I’ve only been in the saltwater side of the aquarium hobby since 2013, however over that time I’ve noticed that clownfish can tell you a lot about your water quality. If their ventral fins are always tucked, something might be off in the tank (usually associated with above average nitrates)

    • @ReefMan
      @ReefMan  5 лет назад +1

      Your clownfish won't care what light you use - but it will be critical for the health of your bubble tip. You will need typical reef lighting - T5, Metal Halide, or LED (maybe use a smaller tank and get e Kessil?). If you primarily want the clownfish you might also have luck with a fake anemone and then you won't need to worry so much about the lighting. The clowns won't mind!

      @@ReefMan any lights that you would recommend for my 60 gal tank? it's a 48 inch long tank

    • @ReefMan
      @ReefMan  5 лет назад +2

      @@miggywiggy11 If you're planning on a full reef I'd recommend the Ecotech Radions or the AI Hydras. If you just need a spotlight, or want to fill in gaps, then the Kessil pendants work great. These would allow you to grow other corals along with your bubble tip - or you could make a bubble tip specific tank, but 60 gallons is overkill for that to be honest. Some bubble tips and a couple clowns would be really cool in a tank like one of the Nuvo line. Bubble tips stay pretty small overall, but they do need strong light and some food from time to time.

Fish tha have my interest are a pair of Ocellaris clownfish, Coral Beauty angelfish, Royal Gramma, Chalk Bass, purple dottyback, and firefish goby ... which of these would make a good community in a tank? I have a fee tank possibilities, a 40 breeder, a 50g that is the 40B footprint just taller, and a 90 that is empty but was destined to be an African Cichlid tank, that COULD change and the cichlids could inhabit a smaler one, but I was thinking 40 or 50 would be big enough for 4 or 5 SW fish, while still affordable to set up, maintain, etc...

    I’m on my third clownfish. All pretty small. I had two in at one time and one swam through the HOB filter. I bought the third and now he is the only one in there. The second one was fine one morning as my wife went to work to when I woke up and walked out to him laying up against the rocks down below in the process of dying. I nudged him and he swam up and sideways then went limp again. Didn’t know what to do. I did the whole nitrogen cycle and water changes of twenty percent on a 55 gallon tank. Salinity was at 1.024 for a good minute. Ammonia and nitrites are lowest possible ph is good. Nitrates are spiking but I bought a HOB refugium and put some chaeto algae in the dented compartment and some de-nitrate rocks in the third compartment. Even came with a light I turn on for about 6-8 hours a day. I bought a hippo tang recently and he’s eating fine and he’s a baby. But he has developed Ich but still eating done so far. Notice tiny white specks in his black area the most. But my third clownfish isn’t eating and hiding off in top corners and low corners and low to the sand around the back of the live rock. Get a small cube like desktop tank with the filter in the back, light in the hood , type of setup sold at all aquarium stores. Go for the 4 or 5 gallon size, and set it up with RO water, no sand, no Liverock, no corals, just the filter running, maybe some plastic plants. This will be your Quarantine tank. Put your new arrival in there, and medicate with Copper based ick medication like Cupramine. Treat for a month. Also, you have to have a small heater in this tank. The higher you can raise the temperature , the faster the Ick parasite hatches from the cysts and swims in the water, which is the only stage you can kill it. I normally keep my tanks at 79, but I raise the Quarantine tank to 83 , especially if you have an ick infected fish, and keep it healthy with water changes, clean filter, and medication. You dont ever want to get your tank with liverock and corals infected with anything, because you cant treat the tank with any medication, as they kill all the bacteria in your liverock and kill your corals. For me, I just have a smaller tank that has liverock and corals in it that I put my fish in after quarantine and leave them in there a few months as if its their permanent home, and eventually they make it to the big tank. The smaller tank is kinda like their summer house before moving back to the big house. Also , research the fish ahead of time to see if they can tolerate the medication you are using. I think I remember that certain fish have kidneys that cant tolerate Copper, I think it was a Butterfly , or maybe Flame Angel, so double check that. Some people use Formalin, which works ,but can be pretty strong for some fish.
