Good video and review.
Russ Lee Photography thank you!
You covered all my questions, and had my exact same setup. I had a hard time finding a review this set up. Thank you!
Absolutely loved this video. Amazing work.
I’ve come back to this months later, such a helpful break down. Thank you.
Thank you, that means a lot!
Not your usual content but I enjoyed the video for the pretty shots and I feel like I learned a little more. I miss the old content but I get it you need to get more people to your channel! You deserve it
Austin Stevens thanks for understanding! And always for your support!
Glad you made it the whole video without coughing 🤣 also, review is fire! The side by sides and comparisons 👌
Paul M Dillon thanks dude and lots of editing 😂 shhh don’t tell people that I was literally dying during the filming of this video
Love Love Love this video I am a hobbiest and always wondered about the 2x teleconverters!
Veronica Tran it is a nice add on but do you currently own lenses that allow for a teleconverter?
Very good review. I’m going to buy the 2x converter. You make a lot of good points, especially related to pixel peeping and where the photo is going to be shared.
Except for the fact that I had to turn the volume up and down and up and down... I really liked this. Some really good info / comparators presented. Thanx
Kevin Balmer I appreciate you saying that. I do need to work on the volume regulation 😅 it’s good feedback.
How well do you think this 2x teleconverter will do in terms of focus, detail, color, and f-stop for shooting the moon in detail if I use the 100-400 GM lens with a Sony A1?
been shooting the g200-600 with the 2xtc on an a7r4 and occasionally on the a9. mostly shooting wildlife (eagles) in NV. other than the auto-focus lag and limited fstop. it has been a dream setup. not perfect by any means, but you can get usable images otherwise impossible. post cropping with good focus is an effective 2400mm. keep an a992 with a 70-400 hot on the carseat for when i see a raptor in flight.
I’m struck by how excellent this video is. GREAT review. You missed one very important detail, the A7R3 can NOT use hybrid autofocus at f11, only the A9 and A9ii can. Your autofocus is limited to contrast only on the A7R3 @ f11. This is why the 1.4 teleconverter is so popular for the 100-400GM.
Good, insightful video: thanks a lot. I owm an A9 and A7III + 100 - 400mm G Master but often require a longer reach. I am currently debating an SEL20TC (I have discounted the SEL14TC as I use the 35mm option when necessary on my A9) or a Sigma 150 - 600mm + MC11. I require a ligh - ish option, so big heavy lenses are out of the question. I have considered a secondhand Canon 400mm f4 DO + Canon 20TCIII + MC 11, but not sure if it is viable. It is not an easy decision.
pete draper honestly native will get you the best autofocus results. I have played with the teleconverter more and I think it’s perfect for video. Photo I have tested more and honestly I like it more now that I’m exposing better 😂
@@ExploreTravelCapture. Thanks a lot, your assessment is much appreciated.
I want to ask, can this 2x Sony converter be used with a Sigma lens or not? Sigma 50mm f1.4 for example
thanks
It does not work with the sigma lenses that are currently for FE
My current kit is the A7R3 Sony 12-24 (amazing and very underrated lens) Tamron 28-75 and Sigma 100-400 Canon mount with Sigma MC-11. I don't use the 100-400 that much so for me the extra cost wasn't really justified. However It's on the list to upgrade after I snatch up some sharp and fast primes.
fantomfoto it’s a good upgrade I am transitioning actually to all primes at the moment with this being my only zoom. That 12-24 is incredible I agree. I would try to sell the sigma but then again it is a lot cheaper and probably much harder to sell
how does the image quality on 2.x compare to 1.4x tele-converter ?
It is significantly better on the 1.4 tele. I won’t even use the 2x on my r4 now unless for video because it’s better to crop
With just the 100-400
Did you use a tripod and turned off Image Stabilization on any of your examples? IS adds motion since the sensor is trying to stabilize a stable lens.
Marji M i did turn off IS sometimes. However it was very windy so the tripod was not fully stable. In video it’s always off in a locked off shot
Thanks for the reply. I’m sorry if I missed you telling us you turned off IS.
Marji M no need to apologize it was a wonderful call out and I don’t think I explained that. I was aware but should have mentioned it
Hi, good video. Me 100-400GM on a tripod automatically turns off stabilization :( Is it normal or is it a mistake?
Viktor Skaličan that is a problem. My gm does not turn off image stabilization. I would send it in if it’s still under warranty. One thing the stabilization does on a tripod though is sometimes it will micro jitter in video
I think that’s a feature, not a problem as the stabilization would be interrupting the stability of the tripod and potentially “fighting” against it.
Will it work on Sony FE 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 G OSS lens?
No it will not
I am buying the 1.4x teleconverter for my 100-400GM. I have half the funds for one so it will be in a month or so before I can buy it though.
Russ Lee Photography what made you decide on the 1.4 if you mind me asking?
It is sharper. I returned my 2x for the 1.4x.
Hello, I hope you reply to comment on your 6 months old video-
Most of the G Master lenses are old tech, around 2012. I want to know how are they able to keep up with the todays fast alpha bodies? No matter how high tech lenses are introduces later. No matter how high tech lens elements, coatings, linear motor types, they keep develloping, these lenses are still on the top rated highly corrected and fast focussing, like forever. How? Do they keep upgrading the electronics, coatings and elements upto date, and keep selling with same names and model numbers?
Kketansa Art I own the a7riv and it keeps up amazingly. These lenses are not old tech when it comes to lenses considering most canon and Nikon equivalent glass was developed long before 2012. Sony designed these telephoto lenses to work with cameras faster than the a9. The g master line was designed as well to resolve up to 100 megapixels. With reviewing my r4 images I can say it does a fantastic job of resolving those 60mp imagss
@@ExploreTravelCapture
Oooo Sounds interesting. So I am getting the 24-70GM for my a6500. I have the 100-400
Kketansa Art I personally hate the 24-70gm 😬 sold mine because it just didn’t mean the Gmaster standards to me. Not all lenses are created equal and their 24-70 is not as good with contrast and CA
@@ExploreTravelCapture
Hmmmm.... 🤔
would it be fine with a sony a 6000 ?
Michael mike yes it would absolutely. The field of view equivalent would be of a 200-600 with the 100-400 and with the teleconverter 400-1200. Often people use cropped sensors for wildlife for this very reason.
@@ExploreTravelCapture ok perfect . thank you for your answer.
Michael mike no worries if you plan to get it on amazon I also have affiliate links for it in the description
Good video
TozenMS thank you if you aren’t already consider subscribing plan to do more reviews like this
I love my A7Riii and 100-400 GM lens. Regarding teleconverters, it’s pretty well known that you want to use max 1.4 teleconverter for photography with this setup. The loss of light with the 2.0 is crazy (f/11) and the autofocus speed is abysmal, so awful for birds in flight.
Living TECH honestly I’m amazed at how good the Sony 2x feel is. It actually was able to use eye auto focus since firmware 2 on surfers at the US open this year. I need to update it. Images are stupidly sharp I recently replaced my 100-400 and think I had a bad 100-400 lens incredibly impressed by photos with the 2x tele now! And video of wildlife I prefer the 2x 😁
Cody Mchardy OK, that’s good to know. I was only going by what I read. Maybe I’ll pick this us then. Thank you!
Living TECH yeah I can confirm with firmware 2.0 you have full auto focus at F11 with my R4 it’s amazing
@@ExploreTravelCapture sony 2x convertor has a firmware update ? i couldn t find any .. or is it for 100 400 gm lens .. which was released 2 years back
WhTs the best video tripod for this kinda setup
A 502 fluid head from manfrotto will offer the smoothest footage for following the action. It’s affordable at $150 vs others that can be $250-$2000
@@ExploreTravelCapture it’s just the head or the whole tripod ?
It’s just the head, you will want some heavier legs for it. But you can get a cheap vanguard Alta pro with a 1/4thread to 3/8th thread adapter for it.
@@ExploreTravelCapture I got a vanguard 264 AB does it work ?
Yeah I use it on that actually with the 1/4 to 3/8 adapter
Yes the A9 would have done far better here. But thanks for your review.
Gerald Williams yeah a9 is going to be selling like crazy now
Your review confirmed my expectations. That teleconverter produces soft images, not worth it. Better to just upscale the image in post (less aberrations and about the same resolution).
keepcoding1 yeah. Realizing it more and more. It’s great for video though!
Hi. Just wanted to say that on 7:40 ish comparing the 2 images you really messed up with focusing 🤦♂️ Other time use only manual focus if you want to compare apples to apples! On the one with the 2x tele-con the focus is totally off and it's in the foreground, check the floats! Btw I own the 100-400 and it's epic!
Christos Serrano Thoma the focus was the same. It was manually focused and I punched in as much as I could to focus on the shingles. However I did return this tele converter and got another and it has proven to be significantly sharper
You lose quality with an adapter?
mark rigg you can as each camera manufacturer adds in camera adjustments based on the lens attached
Widely known and even written in Sony's a7r3 manual that you lose PDAF autofocus above F8 and only have CDAF autofocus from there on out. So using a 2x tele on a a7r3 with the 100-400GM makes no sense for moving subjects. Stick with the 1.4X tele

You shouldn't keep your bow strung when not being used, it's bad for it.
sgradone lol 😂 that bows destroyed already 😬 my other two are in the closet unstrung if it makes you feel beeter
@@ExploreTravelCapture fair.
This is the first of your videos of seen so didn't know if it was mostly a set dressing.
Thanks for the reply. 👍
sgradone of. Purse love that you noticed and it was cool seeing another archer reply 😁
Teleconverters have always been a scam. It would be different if they had moving elements that could sense the lens profiles and micro adjust depending on what lens they were used with.
But now they are essentially a fixed piece of glass and plastic/metal that essentially always compromises all for the price of a full, functioning budget lens, despite having much less material and engineering going into them.
They are useful, but should be half the price; perhaps less.
