I compared these two lenses earlier this year and I found the 70-200 GM2 with 2x was actually sharper - and that was what I have kept. I love this lens - it is the best I have ever owned!
I was very surprised at how sharp the images were with the 70-200 and the 2x teleconverter it was very close comparison I found the 100-400 was a little sharper around the outside edges.
@Jonathantuba oh really? So you still have the combo?? Have you used it for birds? Better yet, and I know this is a long shot, but have you used the combo for astrophotography? Thanks for the response!
I actually traded my 100-400 & 135gm lenses to buy the new 70-200gm mkii. I already have a 1.4tc, but ordered the 2x tc. Only problem is, I haven’t been able to get out and try the lens out yet, as I did my back in. Glad to see your video and conclusions. Looks like my decision won’t be one I regret.
Very little at the edges of the photo which I can crop out or ad a slight vignette if there’s no room to prop. I am actually going to sell my 100-400 just because I don’t need it now. With the 2x and the 70-200 f2.8 vs 2
Thank you for your video, it’s really helpful and heartfelt, although I still hesitate to buy it or not since I saw some other people said it will lose unacceptable sharpness
Thank you. Do you know why so many who bought the 2X teleconverter on B&H have given it bad or lackluster reviews. Currently own the 70-200/2.8 GM II and the 100-400/4.5-5.6 GM but have considered selling the 100-400 to use the money towards some other gear. Take care.
@@stevenwaldstein2249 not sure why when I use it I get very usable images. I have considered the same thing but then I use it and realized how much I love it. I have since sold my 70 to 200f2.8 and purchased the 70 to 200 F4 that is also a macro lens so I sold macro lens instead
@@wtfstop Thank you. Actually did the same so selling the 90mm f/2.8 G Macro might be the lens to sell for me as well. Like the really light travel weight of the 70-200/4 MACRO G II. I use it in my travel bag on a A7CR. Take care.
I did get this lens when I got my Sony A7R V and got the 1.4 and the 2x converters and loving them and find that I use this lens more then my Sony 200-600mm for the wildlife here in Alaska but also find that when I’m out in will put the 2x on the 70-200mm 2.8 ii and the 1.4 on the 200-600mm
I have since sold by 70-200 f2.8 and bought the 70-200 F4 that’s also a macro lens. It saves me a little room when traveling I have two lenses in one I have not used teleconverters on that particular lens yet but when I do, I’m gonna do another video.
@@wtfstop Thats the only thing I wish the Sony 70-200mm 2.8 ii had was the macro other then that I really love the lens and so now thinking of getting the 90mm 2.8 macro
I have the 70-200mm GM II, 100-400mm GM, and the 200-600mm G lenses. I love all of them. But, I'm older now and I need to lighten my load when I travel. But, I also need the reach of a long telephoto. So, I've ordered the 1.4x teleconverter to use with the 70-200. I've used teleconverters in the past and found they degraded the image too much. But, I'll give this one a try and see how it does. Your images look great btw. I'm very surprised since you were using a 2x.
Teleconverters work way better with newer lenses. I have the 100-400 and the extender has issues with focus and the image quality gets taken down a lot. I tried it with the 200-600 and the 70-200 and the results are way better.
just ordered this lens, really considering also getting that 2x teleconverter for shooting birds. Have you tried it on birds yet? Great video btw thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks for the video. I'm just deciding whether to buy a 20TC for my 70-200 GM II = whether it makes sense. After seeing your videos and photos on flicker, I think "yes, i will buy it"
The puppy at 11:03 is much blurrier than the puppy at 10:27. I too have both a 100-400 and a 70-200GM2. I plan to continue using both. 70-200GM2+TC2 is very blurry.
No sure I have not had good luck with the tamron lenses I prefer Sigma for 3rd party lenses. Do you shoot sony? If so try the 60-600 sigma so far I really like that lens
@@wtfstop I’m looking for a semi compact travel friendly mainly for landscapes and occasionally wildlife lens. 100-400mm or 50-400mm seems to fit this specific use case. So I was trying to decide between the Sony 100-400mm GM and the more recently released Tamron 50-400mm lens. Sony GM has a faster aperture but the Tamron seems more versatile with the focal range. Yes native Sony lenses are more ideal and have better features such as the 30fps with A1 or A9 but I don’t use those bodies so it wouldn’t apply to me. However, the Sony GM lens is compatible with the teleconverter and pairing it with the 1.4x would mean having a 140mm-560mm lens albeit f8.
@@tsizzle personally would by the Sony I know it’s sharp and fast you might have to send a few tamrons back to finally get one that is acceptably sharp
Great comparison, it was indeed hard to spot the difference, especially on youtube. I found the 100-400 had a little tiny edge in sharpness or brighter? Maybe my mind playing tricks, never the less it’s negligible. Internal zoom is great and the aperture ring is nice to have. The difference in price is also a factor to keep in mind when you include the TC2.0. Thx for this update :)
Yes it might have been a tiny bit sharper I am going to upload images to flicker I will reply with site address when done. The over all was really shocking to me. I have never been a fan of the teleconverters but have always had them just in case. Now I am going to do lens reviews on all of my lenses that take the tele's and post them. Your welcome you inspired the video.
with 2x teleconverter, it seems loosing depth of field compare with 100 - 400 mm or without teleconverter. to compensate that, one may have to stop down aperture, which is not ideal for low light conditions...
@@wtfstop I have the 70200GM2 (LOVE IT, NEVER USE 70200 2.8 SINGLE HANDEDLY BEFORE V2!) for a few months but recently got the 2.0x. I had the 100400GM which is great and agree with all your test result which is great. Yes 2x on 70200GM was not good in terms of AF and IQ (1.4x IQ was acceptable but the AF is slower). 100400GM also does not work well with 2.0x. Just ok with 1.4x. I am hoping Sony might come out with a 100/200-400 f4 lens + improve TC like with 70200GM2.

Must just be the RUclips video because the raw file look almost identical if you zoom in to 100% and pixel peak that is when you notice it.
I think that's because the dog is a lot closer at 11:03 so more of it is out of focus. The eyes still look like they're sharp and in focus.
Yes she is much closer with the 100-400 but her eyes are sharp
Did the 70200GM2 make any soft clunking noise when you move the lens up and down?
No it is very quiet. The noise you probably hear was me zooming in and out to fast and hitting the end.
If i will use the 70-200gm2 with 2x on my sony alpha iii without cropping, will it be still the same as the 100-400 or the quality will look bad
I find that they look great if you pixel Peep you will find some difference but us photographers are our own worst critics
