How Solomon Islands was divided by Chinese influence | If You’re Listening

  • In Solomon Islands, China has built most of the venues which have allowed the capital Honiara to host the 2023 Pacific Games.
But China and Xi Jingping are not alone. Like a geopolitical version of The Bachelor, China, Taiwan, Australia, and the United States are all trying desperately to win Honiara’s heart.
This tussle has caused panic in Taipei and Canberra, anger in Beijing and Washington, and actual violence in the Solomons.
It’s hard to think of a more perfect example of trouble in paradise.

Small note to Matt and the ABC team: the "ai" in Malaita is locally pronounced more like the long "a" in "mate", rather than the long "i" in "mite. If you listen to how both Suidani and Sogavare say Malaita (at about 12:22 and 12:35) it's closer to (though not exactly) the long a sound. The island is known as Mala or Mara, depending on what part you're from, and Mala'ita is derived from this. I never heard the "long i" form of the name when I was there in the 1980s and 90s, except when Americans tried to copy the name from Australian sources, but I have noted the "long i" form used by the ABC for the last few years (but note the ABC pronunciation used to be the "long a" form in the past - listed at about 9:32).

australia progressively cut back financial support to our island neighbours over and over during the last 10 years. Of course they were going to be enticed by money from elsewhere. It's why the first thing Labord did when they got in power was to spend a lot of time with Wong and Albo meeting the leadership of many small island nations. Duttons "the water will be lapping at their doors" joke won't be forgotten by these countries anytime soon.

After longstanding tensions between competing ethnic groups intensified in 1998, Solomon Islands fell into armed chaos and anarchy.
At the request of the Solomon Islands Government, Australia led 2 multinational peacekeeping missions in 2000 and 2003 to end the violence and restore law and order. A mix of military, police and civilian personnel deployed from Australia, New Zealand and 13 other countries from the Pacific region.

All countries have to sop dealing and buying from China. They have only one interest and that is to dictate over every country they can. Building stadiums in Honiara is 100% useless to the country and its citizens. That is not the type of infostructure they need to help progress and uplift the economy. They need help to promote tourism and trade to help all of the citizens. Not sell out the country. Just have to look at how Vanuatu has turned out. Chinese moved into shops and could buy items cheaper than the citizens for the identical item and under cut them until they were forced out of their shops. They move in like a virus and kill off the competition until they own and run everything, and the citizens can hardly make a living.
