Eyo and welcome to my Fleet Histories series where we take a look at the operational history of aircraft fleets both active and retired. Passenger airliners are normally featured, although freighter and government aircraft will be covered occasionally. This series was inspired by the videos of elmauriplatense, Ibirdball, Scaring Crab, and many other aviation RUclipsrs.
Swissair was a loyal customer of Douglas and its successor McDonnell Douglas throughout the course of its history, having operated almost every type developed by the manufacturer. The airline was the launch customer of the MD-80, which was a stretched version of the Douglas DC-9 first flown in 1979. Swissair received their first aircraft, and MD-81, in 1980 and went on to operate more than a dozen MD-80s until 1998.
