..Out of my realm of knowledge, Bill Bruford has undoubtedly incomparable timing when compared to any of the legends.. Simply too much contrast differential between Bill and the others.
Watching this you can clearly understand where tool's style and danny's playing came from.
100%. Tool is my favourite band but if you listen closely their Fear Innoculum album is in many ways a cover of the Discipline album lol. Almost all the themes heard in FI can be heard somewhere in Discipline :P
Josh Holme too!
@@goesjem I didnt really JH was inspired by KC... I guess it makes sense :P not with the polyrythms but with the melodies sure
@@michaelmaloney8183 Indeed. Listen to KC's Frame By Frame, then any Q.O.T.S.A track and the melodies are all there haha. I have always thought that. Inspiration comes from everywhere!
@@goesjem Will do! Thank you :)
bill was so great they had to get three drummers to fill the spot he left!
Inb4 you realize Bill was there, he was the guy with the white tank top
@@NaviafromtheSDR I think they mean now, since Crimson's current lineup had 3 drummers, although Gavin Harrison is one of them, and he's one of the greatest working drummers around right now
@@armanlopeman Might be
Gavin Harrison is one of the most amazing drummers alive, but also gotta love Pat Mastelotto for some of his electronic innovation. He’s like the digital version of Jamie Muir, except he hasn’t coughed up stage blood.
Yes
Aggreed! Bruford's otherworldly ability to perfectly track multiple, often odd, time signatures makes him one of the greatest ever.
Fripp's New Standard Tuning made playing the fast early part (and the whole song really) more difficult than he expected, very interesting. I know this because I learned to play this song on guitar in standard tuning, like Adrian and Robert played it in the 80's. Fripp's NST makes the 4 thicker strings on guitar be tuned almost in reverse to standard, this is the same way violin and mandolins are tuned, basically the shapes of chords require different finger positions.
In Discipline, even disciplined man is sometimes undisciplined
Then maybe Fripp should have kept a standard tuned guitar on stage specifically for this piece
One of the greatest KC songs ever made. The whole Discipline Album --- timeless.
I do wish Adrian and Trey were still in. Adrian always added a new dimension with his style, I even feel like he could work with Jakko in the band especially since Jakko is great with the Greg, Boz and Wetton songs. Trey being a second Chapman stick and Warr guitar player was great as well, not quite as exposed. I miss Bill Bruford too but at least he’s happy in retirement.
I would also like for fripp to bring in David Cross on violin. Ir would be interested to hear him play stuff from ITCOTCK-Lizard and Discipline-now.
I don't think Trey would fit the new formation well. They already have a good balance with the non-percussion instruments in the back. I miss Belew as well, the double trio is my favorite version of the band, but they do replace his parts in post-Discipline Crimson pretty elegantly in my opinion. They were killing it live when I saw them live.
lmao, i cant believe fripp is playing this in NST. what is wrong with him. like, imagine making this 10x more difficult than it already was
Whenever I see a performance you can see Adrian, Bill and Pat really into it but Robert looks unusually happy in this one
I'd seen this performed in the 80s when the band was a quartet, but here, with two Stick players! Awesome!
Nice to see it evolve to a 5-piece but still stay true to form. I hope Beat band takes this incredible song on in the tour. Jakko certainly handled Adrian's part in the later years.
The fact that they are not completely locked in this time, makes me love them even more.
Very true, but once you figure out the melody and feel for the groove, it is not so hard. Watch Bruford. He is playing minimum. Counting 8th notes. It is very good though. The whole feel and vibe!
@@goesjem as a guitarist, I'd way this is one of the toughest songs I've tried learning, let alone if I were to try to play this song with someone else.
@@heatherperleberg7816Henceforth, the title track. The track itself takes so much discipline out of yourself, you have to learn how to maintain uncommon time while the other plays different. It's one of the reasons why I love Discipline so much!
@@goesjem Well, theres a full drum transcript online, its actually much more crazy then it sounds
Well, the fact Bill and Pat have to manage the 4/4 bass drum while doing 17/16 with their hands throughout the song makes it for the challenge
Not so into the blurry camera work. It's a bit distracting from an otherwise amazing performance.
NOPE. Its about all of them. Bill was phenomenal. Bill kept it together. On the few times Robert and Adrian "lost it" on live performances of this Bill kept it going. But it was absolutely amazing symmetry on all the the members. I was privy to see this live from front of stage in 1981 in ann arbor at the second chance. Mind blown at an early age.
Was there with ya bro
¡Estuve ahí! Se van a cumplir ¡27 años! y lo recuerdo tan vívidamente (en realidad nunca lo voy a olvidar)...
Very intrigued at How Steve Vai and Danny Carey will fill in Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford’s shoes.
Does Robert have a bit of a smile on there at the end? I thought he didn't learn to smile until about five years ago!
Great performance 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 one of my top moments in life was being on their concert in Mexico 2019.
Saw a couple of shows on that tour in the US myself. Great stuff. Fripp always puts together a top notch lineup.
The most fascinating thing about this song live is the drummer's ability to play the song out steadily. This song sounds like more of a studio piece, rather than a good choice for a live act. King Crimson does not sound locked in when playing this track, and usually they are known for having very skilled musicians.
Fripp is very demanding.
Jag får rysningar och börjar nästan böla när jag hör detta Matematiska mästerstycke. 🙏
this song worked better with the 4 piece band, as the double trio it sounded sloppy in comparison
Tried and tried this intro ,,, lol it's just so hard to learn and keep going. Utter genius Robert. 4:39
Thank you for this upload 🙏❤️
How many discordant time signatures do you want to follow? Let's find out!
Genius.
Fripp la pifio en varios momentos de la canción. Al fin veo que es un ser humano.
This harmonized version of bassline is absolutely crazy. Wish if it was on the recording...
Saw this tour in Seattle. Pre-func at The Cloud Room. Bob! I was young!
Can't explain why I never forgot my first time listing to it but I LOVE this. Crazy genius here
This band is where Meshuggah got their inspiration.
is it me or they're blocking the discipline live videos :(
It's nothing new, Eren.
@@aaba1938 stop doing shit mr fripp
the "bruford and the beat" clip explaining this song is gone now too :{
Are these camera shots meant to simulate glaucoma?
They're fucking with you. You should see the live in japan one, it's like burns the image into your tv in one color. Great while your tripping annoying when not
extra difficult
Que versión espectacular!
It sounds chaotic at times.. until you realize it isn't. A little like some of the weirder tracks on Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica.. (and I DID say A LITTLE 😁 )
Love the song, but who was the a-hole that shot this out of focus?
lol at how every king crimson video has comments from new tool fans now
wait until you guys find the 25 year old interview where danny carey listens to this song in like a polka dot shirt
Cinematography here is a bit weird but good but anyway at 4:17 is Fripp looking cartoonishly smug?
4:26 is fripp mouthing "sorry..help me" or "Adrian, help me!" here?
Like in all Discipline performances, Robert Fripp is mouthing compass to Bill, Tony, Adrian, Pat and Trey, by saying
"Two, three"
You can see it more clearly on the performance from Japan in 1984. He counts "Two, three, four", next to the end
すばらしい!
I can't believe this!!! A fripp's mistake!!!?
бляцьььь..... это просто какой-то ....шедевр мать - перемать......
Încifrat, genial , puțin mai jos de Tot.

Awesome fucking Band!
Swirling whirlwinds of metal bees
Tool 7empest \m/
Check out “frame by frame”
Tool are probably my favorite band but yeah, they owe their career to King Crimson
Holy Shit Both bands are unreal, they are similar but also very different in many ways. definitely KC was a big influence but overall both are extremely good and very unique
Rather Vicarious
Were I President I would sign an executive order that “Discipline” be the only music a company can play when they put you on hold
reminds me a bit of music is my radar (blur), maybe an inspiration
Mathematical rock
oh boy what the fuck did they do in this
the bass harmonies in the c minor section tho... unnhh~ 😩💦🥵
Crimson opened for Tool in2001 for 4 or 5 shows
As an intellectual exercise, impressive. As music, uninteresting.
Bruford does have amazing timing, though there are a handful of others who can keep multiple simultaneous signatures.
i find the studio version to be very tasteful aside from being intricate. interesting perspective
I find it quite interesting, myself. Not a lot like it out there..like anything, your mileage may vary.
I disagree. I think this song is incredible, intellectually and musically. I do agree that the studio version has more of a groove to it, though.
Azzo peppe se anche Tony si sbaglia vuol dire che l'umanita' e' ormai al capolinea.
So so complex
It’s cool to hear a band that was so inspired by Tool.
Lol funny joke.
@PatchesVillano it's both a joke and kinda correct when it comes to The Power to Believe
The space rock/shoegaze version... 😁🤪
Danny Carry was heavily influenced by Bill Buford and Niel pert
Review of this classic album here: ruclips.net/video/8jDFhmztaSA/видео.html
Not their best performance...
Kind of a sloppy job
But after all, it is Crimson
They created it, and no other band could even come close
Fripp was probably pissed
this was a rehearsal tour
..spett@colo
Line up...?🥴
i love KC and this is crap. NST was fripp's worst idea
Idea = 10/10
In reality = ehhhhhhhh
... Once you get past the novelty of the wacky time signatures, this piece really isn't that great. I mean, I love King Krimson but let's get real here... Or put it this way: non-musicians will think this sounds like shit. lol
Man, I think exactly the way you do. I really like the song but, after some time of the song, you really lost the track and the music just turns into a little disaster. But, man, Bruford is a beast!
Math rock is goat
it's because they play it in a "rock FM-friendly"way. Played with traditional asian instruments, this piece would take all its sense. Because the influence here comes from javanese music,...if you miss it, you miss the whole purpose of the song
@@Dramalius Nah i think this performance just isnt up to snuff imo, ruclips.net/video/IRMbYRt4MQ4/видео.html
just 10 years earlier, but bruford is still great in both dont get it twisted
@@TheSynergy40 I agree that Fripp's playing is very sloppy here, but it's because they play the piece quicker than the studio version, and also because Fripp uses his New Standard Tuning... but IMHO Discipline remains a fantastic track anyway, it's been more than 10 years since I discovered it and I don't get tired of it. This kind of music transcends space and time
Selkies was a rip-off?????????? No.....
what do you mean?
@@edorissen
Listen to Between the Buried and Me - Selkies.
I wouldnt say a rip off but yeah they are similar lol
Insanity isn’t just doing things the same and expecting different outcomes. It’s also Crimson
