The middle, airy section makes more sense when you realize this track was a big F you to the record label that asked Tool to write a "harder" more marketable song. Nothing says F you like a few minutes of wind and inaudible lyrics in an 8 minute song that no radio DJ will ever play.

The record label had no idea who their audience even was.. ironically it succeeded in the end to the benefit of Tool

This is Maynard's response when the record label asked for a "harder song" so that they could market as a single.

Yup, and even better is the huge quiet part in the middle…making it completely unfriendly to radio. This song is a giant middle finger to their label.

I love that Maynard delivered exactly what they asked for, in a completely unusable “radio friendly” format.
I think that Tool has some of the best and most complicated "diss" tracks in the game. This and Hooker with a Penis are perfect examples of this. This is definitely a huge "diss" to the record execs in every way, from the lyrics to the music. Gotta love it. As always, I enjoyed your reaction. "Caption Lauren" has been on point lately, in particular.
"Hooker with a penis" is a must-listen, period.

I believe this was an "F you" to record Exec who wanted them to add another song that would be radio friendly. Thus the anger and the loooooong interlude.

First! So this song was literally made as a 'fuck you' to the music exec's that wanted them to put a fast, angry, radio friendly song on the album. So they made it too long with that soft interlude in the middle, and lyrics pointed directly at the powers that be. Lol

Another great reaction video Lauren! I love how the "Hope this is what you wanted" line worked so well with this reaction vid :) I really look forward to when you eventually get to the Fear Inoculum album, which is somewhat a culmination of all their prior work, with every song being a perfect masterpiece. But I am enjoying you getting to know their earlier stuff first. Would love if something from Undertow would be next, like 4 degrees, or Pushit off Aenima. Though if continuing with the Angry Maynard theme, Hooker with a Penis def should be next!

So the rumor is...when the record execs, whoever they were, heard the tracks for Lateralus they came back with something like 'could we get a little metal on the record?'. Obviously you don't tell an artist how to paint and Maynard obviously would be the quintessential example of who not to tell to do anything, thus we get 'Ticks and Leeches'. A song about how Maynard feels about how talentless dicks try to run other people's lives and I don't think anyone could've been more blunt, while creating such a great song, with of course a nice metal sound to it. If that rumor isn't true it should be. It certainly explains the narrative to a tea. LOL

This song is essentially one big fuck you to the record company when they asked for more angry songs, since Slipknot and other metal bands were getting big at the time. Well they made an angry song, and they put in 4 minutes of gentle, smooth guitar and drums into the bridge to lengthen the song. So guess what bitch, you don't get to put this on the radio!
