Reid whats your opinion on holstering a pistol? Whether to look at the holster or keeping your head on a swivel and having muscle memory when holstering
I know you're not asking me, but my .02 is this: when I instruct at the range (and in "real life"), I'd rather have the shooter take a quick look if they have to, in order to index their weapon to holster, rather than fumbling with it. Muscle memory comes with repetition, but there's always a chance something is hanging up the re-holster. Keep one's head on a swivel, yes, but never be in a hurry to put your gun away and only do so when you're confident the threat has been eliminated or is no longer is a threat. If one has to take a peek to get holstered, then it shouldn't matter much as the threat is gone, or you wouldn't be holstering to begin with. Just how I practice and teach it. 👍👍
@@gadsdenconsulting7126 yeah i personally understand both arguments ive just seen it done both ways by professional instructors and was curious how reid teaches it
@@gadsdenconsulting7126 I agree, re-holster reluctantly! If you can't afford to look at the holster, then you should not re-holster in the first place. It is also a good reminder for shooting drills that there is no such thing as speed holstering. The whole point of drills is to understand the dynamics of violent confrontations. I've never done this test so take it for what it's worth: Par score of 100 sounds low. If "above 124" is Master and Reid shot 198 than it seems to me the metric is skewed. That's 60% over Master grade; that shouldn't be possible. Reid obviously did great shooting, I'm not trying take away from his skill set but it didn't seem his runs were *that* fast. Like Lucas Botkin fast. So I'm thinking 100 is par for carry as in "if you carry and can't 100, you should not carry". 101-120 is Good, 121-150 is Above Avg, 151-195 is Master & 196-220 is The Ghost of John Browning.
Why don't you go try it for yourself? Then see if you have the same thoughts. There are a SMALL handful of people on this planet who can approach a score like what you just saw. 100 on this test is far more difficult than you think. And anything over 125 is a lot more difficult than you think, especially from concealment.
@@ReidHenrichs I don't think you understood what I meant Reid. I meant absolutely no sleight to your skill or performance. I just think that there could be a broader spread on the scoring system. You said it went from from 100-124, par to Master and you're scoring near 200. Maybe then 180-200 should be Master, sub 100 would be unfit for carry, 100-120 good, 121-150 above average, 150-180 Doc Holliday, above 180 is God mode. I guess, more succinctly, I find it odd that a "Master" score would leave enough room for anyone to achieve 60% over. I would think labeling something "Master" would lend itself to being quite an accomplishment that only few could achieve. You said yourself there's a small handful that could approach 200, but yet someone scoring 126 could say they're a Master level just the same because that's how broad the master range seems. "Flinching" is your understandable reaction to unpleasant stimulus, loud noise, getting slammed in the shoulder, contraption spewing muzzle flash and slamming into the web of your hand.
