    Let's remember that without this game (which is in fact the Father/Grandfather of all adventure games, as well as being the first game to ever have an Easter Egg in a game), we would never have had masterpieces like The Legend Of Zelda. Praise to you great *Adventure* for the *Atari 2600.* Despite being 43 years old, you are still very popular with Retro enthusiasts.

    • @itznix6962
      @itznix6962 Год назад +4

      Not really, the legend of zelda was truly the first adventure game. While being called adventure, it doesn't really feel like an adventure. That doesn't mean it's a bad game it just means that it didn't invent the adventure genre. Colossal Cave Adventure was the first releasing on 1976.

      @@itznix6962 Correct. This Adventure was inspired by Colossal Cave Adventure. That said, no, Zelda has so many similarities to Adventure that it wouldn't be unreasonable to play Zelda's BGM during this video. Top-down; screen to screen; keys to open doors; dungeons/castles whose entrances are in the center of the screen; the very first thing you do in the game is collect a sword; _there's a bridge you can carry around and use to climb over walls._ As for the game's pedigree as an adventure game, you would know better if you were around to see it in 1980 but this game _was_ the standard bearer. Atari catalog manuals had a category called "adventure", which barely ever grew, since getting a game of this scope to run on that hardware was a unique challenge, but they absolutely understood that this game deserved its own category like that. You can truthfully say that Zelda, which came out six years later on hardware two generations removed from the 2600, was a _better_ adventure game, but preferring one game over the other doesn't mean you get to pretend Adventure wasn't there first.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 8 месяцев назад

      @@Asterra2 No, they stopped making catalogs in late 1982! Maybe it has to do with sending fans Atari Age magazine which had ads for new games, or maybe they thought they could save a few pennies by taking catalogs out of unsold Pac-Man games and putting them in games released late 1982-3. If they had made a new catalog for late 1982, the Adventure Territory would have included _E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Raiders of the Lost Ark,_ and _Swordquest: Earthworld._ None are good games in my opinion. Even _Haunted House_ used 6 rooms for each of 4 screens instead of 24-30 screens like Adventure and Superman did, so could have been much better.

Elden Ring is perhaps the most recent iteration.

    **Also, there is a little special item in the black castle that requires the bridge to get to. A little tiny, tiny dot. If you find it... bring it back towards the golden castle but 1 screen further to the right. There the barrier line on the right side of the screen should be flashing. Go up and over the barrier to the special room with the programmers name.

    This is probably my favorite video game of all time (definitely #1 for the Atari). It never gets old. Back in the 90s someone made a greatly expanded DOS version called Indenture.
    What I would love to see would be an Atari Adventure Construction Set, where you can design your own levels, objects, and characters. Maybe one that supports multiple players split screen (or network on PC) but with the same simple 2600 block graphics and sounds. Make it programmable in simple dialect of BASIC, VB, JavaScript or Python (or support all languages) to script simple logic or behavior, make new rules (like a game of capture the flag, hide & seek, Pong/Breakout/Combat variants, etc.). Maybe make a shared world version like a simple 2-D Minecraft where people can host their own world off their PC that their friends can connect to. Why not :-)
    As is, Adventure rules, even and especially today!

      @@psterud I don't think I learned anything on my own for all the times I played _Raiders of the Lost Ark._ Everything I did was in the manual, or later a walkthrough on the Internet. I didn't know kids could ask Atari for the walkthrough! It kept score but didn't really tell you the score, so you had to count dots on the manlift. It turns out using the grenade cost you points, but I didn't know.
      I got into text adventure games on computer after that and won Scott Adams's _Adventureland, Pirate's Cove,_ and _Voodoo Castle._ Those games told you when you gained (or lost) points.
      I almost won _Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ which my aunt and uncle had. Before I left, I opened the booklet that said "If you _really_ need a hint," but it was an order form for the hint book! I finally beat it years later online (no saves allowed), and it was very anticlimactic. "You opened the hatch to the planet! Look for the sequel!" or something like that. There never was a sequel.
      I missed that they'd included one timed-action event in _King's Quest V,_ which was a text adventure with graphic-interface, so bought the hint book for that one thing. You were supposed to throw the boot (or something) at the cat before it ran across the screen.

    Man this gameplay got me rolling with excitement seeing the struggles to finish the second play through what a well designed game from a primitive and hardware limited of the Atari 2600 definitely the Godfather of Adventure games and truelly what led to Legend Of Zelda and so many others to follow its Blue Print of this game

    Oh, man, that BAT! AARRGGG!!!!
    This game, although simple, has a very cleverly laid out screen pattern, making the best use of limited memory. And Warren Robinett's "name screen" will go down as the first "easter egg" in a video game. He answered an email i sent to him and talked a little about this. You can probably find it if you google his name. After Atari, Warren started "The Learning Company".

      GOAL: Recover the Holy Grail (*cue Monty Python music)
      Three castles, three keys, Gold (HOME) White, and Black.
      Three Dragons, Gold, Green, and RED. Gold dragon, slow, Green dragon, medium, Red dragon FAST.
      Magic BAT, that teaches children to curse at magic bats . . . Mr. Bat steals things - swaps them for fun, it doesn't matter what you have, he wants to take it. If he has something, he will drop it.
      Purple Bridge - crosses over the Labyrinth walls.
      Golden Sword - to slay dragons.
      Magic magnet - will pull sword, grail, keys, and bridge toward itself.
      Invisible Bit - one pixel dot that opens the wall to see the hidden Easter Egg signature of the Author.
      The Invisible bit is in the dark labyrinth in a room with no doors (you will know by the flashing objects) - use the Purple Bridge to enter the room in the middle and in the lower corner of the room you will bump into the Invisible Bit. You can only see it in the dark flickering rooms.
      The wall is one of the 'Line' walls in the hallways - the room farthest to the right of the Golden Castle . Yes, it is wonderful to find this secret item !
      When returning to the Gold Castle, Carry the Grail above you, and when you place it in the golden Castle, the graphics are most beautiful, as the whole castle will flash in lovely colors... :-) Yay !
      Pro Tip one: clear out what you need from white or black castle, then lock the bat inside the castle carefully. This takes skill, and the bat can not escape. Then the rest of the game is easier. Try to lock him inside the castle while he is carrying a dead dragon... two problems out of your way.
      Pro Tip two: Seek out and slay all three dragons first, then go after the grail.
      Pro Tip three: collect all items and lock them in the gold castle , careful where you put the gold key.
      Pro Tip four: You can lock a key inside it's own color castle, sealing it forever. While the gate is closing drop the key inside the gate.
      You are the most beautiful / handsome, bravest, strongest, most courageous Paladin Knight fearlessly facing the magical foes to find and save the Grail and return it back to the golden Throne.
      God's Speed, Sir Knight ! :-)

    Man, it has been forever since I played that game at the age of 12. LOL! I used to play the heck out of this. As well as other favorites like Yar's revenge, Joust, Pitfall, Demons to Diamonds just to name a few. Talk about taking a trip down memory lane. And a game my dad hated because the joysticks kept breaking when we would play, Decathlon. I can't forget ET. I could go on and on, but won't. ha ha ha!
    I so hated that bat. So many times I had the golden key to unlock the castle, and I was stuck in the maze with nowhere to run. The bat would come and trade me. It would tick me off so bad. LOL!! I loved getting eaten by a dragon as the bat was carrying the dragon. You would get a tour of the game, every area.
