I have the hardest time getting upwind in waves. I can’t build speed up between waves and I just drift downwind

Try to get to the outside or stay on the inside and go upwind there instead! Once you get to the peak, drop in, ride the wave, and then pull out and start tacking back upwind! As long as you aren't in the beak zone you shouldn't have any trouble going upwind!

I wonder is your strategy looping it the whole way down the pocket of the wave so your lines don’t go slack?

Yeah that is one way! Lately im more into unhooking down the line but the way way I have found is to loop it or send the kite hard up and over to put the kite exactly where you want to go, and then use a combination of edging and sheeting to hold the kite there while you are going down the line. Best way to practice is doing a downwinder as this is exactly longer version of what you will being doing riding waves

    What board were you riding?

LF Echo! Unfortunately Liquid Force kites is shut down but I ride the Tona Pop 2.0 now! Hands down my favorite board. The rocker shape and outline actually make it good for riding waves along with freestyle.
