Freaks is an interesting horror film for me, because I'm older. In 1974, the last of the Ugly Laws, ordinances that were in place to ensure that visibly disabled people and other "unsightly" people were restricted from living freely in public, were finally ended in the Unites States. Even after this, people were arrested and/or fined. There was an immense stigma against disabled people, and disabled activists fought very hard to break that stigma. There's still work to be done. Freaks was released in 1932. Times hadn't changed nearly enough for most audiences to see the humanity in the various characters, and to flip that mental switch to consider that the conventional beauty might be the true monster. To close, I'll just add that your special effects and direction are BANANAS. I look forward to seeing more of your work. S'good.
These laws started in the late 1800s in the United States, as "unslightly beggar ordinances", then expanded to include disabled people. Sometimes these laws got rid of public spaces, other times, they got rid of the people. San Francisco and Chicago started this. The history of disabled people and laws affecting them is something else.

This video was amazing! I love the way you discuss the horror genre. It's such a sadly common thing to hear people complaining "Keep your politics out of my entertainment" while failing to realizing, or refusing to see that entertainment is still created by humans and based on human concerns and experiences, therefor keeping real issues out of them is nigh on impossible. Entertainment has never been nearly as braindead as I think most people are hoping.
Omg not gonna lie I burst out laughing at the end of the mist too - AND in the theater - I was met with tearful looks of shock from other patrons as I’m sure they believed I was the most irreverent unfeeling bitch 😅 to me it elevated the film verses others that left the theater feeling dejected

I love when I start a video and just a few minutes in can tell that I'll need AND want to watch it multiple times. I struggle with being able to hold in my mind complex interweaving patterns of ideas, concepts, and structures (not a problem with your presentation I promise!) and grasping it all simultaneously to SEE the whole thing clearly. So having the ability to come back to your videos as many times as I need is great. And when it comes with this much thought, clarity, artistic flare and an all around captivating presentation it just makes me happy. It's not just that these are things I want to learn and absorb fully but that you've made that experience joyous. The part where you talked about The Lord of the Flies describing cruelty as basic human nature vs The Mist depicting cruelty as driven by ideology and fear, made me think of the Tongan castaways. The group of real young boys marooned together on an island. And what they actually did was help each other, care for the wounded, work together to produce shelter and food and maintain a signal fire that eventually led to their rescue after more than a year. And that rescue was immediately followed by their arrest for stealing the boat they had crashed into the island. I'm not sure what my point is, other than the horror that surfaces in real life usually comes at us from a totally different direction than the one we were taught to expect.
This video could not have come out at a more perfect time! I’ve been re-listening to my favorite horror podcast, The Magnus Archives. It is by far one my favorite examples of cosmic horror and I highly recommend to anyone who is interested in that genre and horror in general. Lord of the Flies is actually a satire on a genre of books that was extremely popular during it's time where Good English Lads™ are stranded and recreate British society. The satire being that children raised in abusive hierarchies with none of the emotional regulation or violent repercussions of the society that made them will recreate only the trauma they have internalized. It's not a commentary on Human nature so much as British society at the time of it's writing.
There is a movie similar to "don't look up" and it's more of a romance/ comedy and I love it. I love when people can use similar premises in different genres

this whole video was AMAZING, the pacing and structure of the info was very easy to follow! Also it made me SO happy to see someone talking about Freaks and how disability has been used in horror! I’m chronically ill and disabled as well as trans, and stories like The Metamorphosis and Frankenstein have played a really big role in me accepting my body and all of its implications for my future, and having those feelings acknowledged in a wonderful, incredibly well researched piece like this was very comforting!

9:35 I need to hop in on the point about "queerness"-- so I'm reading Kakfa's collected works right now and he comes off much more as a struggling incel than a young queer man-- K. talks a lot about pining after women but they are repulsed by his lack of Chad jaw or whatever. He was also chronically ill and describes himself in a sickly sort of way, and that is where I think a lot of the Metamorphosis is drawn from emotionally. There's a lot of contemporary/internalized ableism in his stuff but I think you touch on that through other lenses like Brundlefly and Freaks. These are just details from his short stories and notes:) Edit: realized this ties back to your points about Lovecraft adaptations later too-- also I'm impressed by your ability to pull off a giant green raincoat like some kind of weather wizard

This was such a great video! I had such a hard time watching Don't Look Up - in fact, I had to watch it in two sittings just to get to the end. In part because it felt like a satire mocking the very real fears of climate destruction I have, my entire life, known about, worked against, and yet feel overwhelmingly powerless to prevent. But you also explored how it fails to inspire activism because of its endorsement of hopelessness - why look up if all you can imagine is the end of the world, and you (assume) you're powerless to stop it? That movie is climate despair in a bottle and I really can't bear to watch it ever again. I'd never heard of capatalist realism before but I'm really glad to be introduced to the concept. I've done a lot of research about climate change and am studying as an engineer to create sustainable climate tech, but I hadn't thought about the impact of unions on creating sustainable infrastructure. Thanks for exploring such important ideas in this video. I also really love the horror genre and greatly enjoyed all the ideas you touched on, they definitely have me thinking.
I am studying renewable energies, because I wanted to make the world a better place. But, the more I learn about it, the more I feel the despair, that we, as individuals, cannot really change anything. Anyways.. great video, I always appreciate your uploads. You definitely deserve more views.

this whole video was AMAZING, the pacing and structure of the info was very easy to follow! Also it made me SO happy to see someone talking about Freaks and how disability has been used in horror! I’m chronically ill and disabled as well as trans, and stories like The Metamorphosis and Frankenstein have played a really big role in me accepting my body and all of its implications for my future, and having those feelings acknowledged in a wonderful, incredibly well researched piece like this was very comforting!
The editing in this makes this vid feel like an hour long flex and I mean that in the best way possible

I felt the same about AHS circus. As I was watching it was ok but when you look back on the absolute cruelty with which humanity treats these people. Individual lives, with hopes and dreams. It’s horror.

🥰 I appreciate this video a looooot, especially your end message! I think it's totally relevant to the thesis of the video. We find ourselves living in a horrifying world, but it's a diversity of tactics and sometimes working within that world we can carve out meaningful moments and try to resolve some of the horrors we face.
I've been watching RUclips video essays for a while breaking down these same movies a million times over, and yet you were able to bring a totally new perspective to each one you spoke on. Amazing work. This channel deserves to get big. Subscribed!

Fraaaank! That was excellent! I hope we are in the “Mist phase” of climate change where we just can’t see that it’ll clear (ie. be effectively, comprehensively and globally dealt with and circumvented) any moment now. However, I’m a pessimist with little hope that we’ll fix it, so Eldritch horror-level dread and hopelessness is most of what I feel about it.

That was such a good fuckin video, you tied in so many different topics in such a way that seemed so natural. You have a way of explaining things that makes people grasp concepts and connect them together without even realizing that it's happening, and then it just sorta clicks and suddenly things that seemed impossible before seem a bit less so. Similar to another commenter, your previous video fundamentally changed my perspective of America and why it is the way it is. I can't wait to see what you come up with next. 9:35 I need to hop in on the point about "queerness"-- so I'm reading Kakfa's collected works right now and he comes off much more as a struggling incel than a young queer man-- K. talks a lot about pining after women but they are repulsed by his lack of Chad jaw or whatever. He was also chronically ill and describes himself in a sickly sort of way, and that is where I think a lot of the Metamorphosis is drawn from emotionally. There's a lot of contemporary/internalized ableism in his stuff but I think you touch on that through other lenses like Brundlefly and Freaks. These are just details from his short stories and notes:)

I always thought of the Metamorphosis as an allegory for becoming disabled and facing the reality that those around you only valued you for being physically/financially useful to them.

This was such a great video! I had such a hard time watching Don't Look Up - in fact, I had to watch it in two sittings just to get to the end. In part because it felt like a satire mocking the very real fears of climate destruction I have, my entire life, known about, worked against, and yet feel overwhelmingly powerless to prevent. But you also explored how it fails to inspire activism because of its endorsement of hopelessness - why look up if all you can imagine is the end of the world, and you (assume) you're powerless to stop it? That movie is climate despair in a bottle and I really can't bear to watch it ever again. I'd never heard of capatalist realism before but I'm really glad to be introduced to the concept. I've done a lot of research about climate change and am studying as an engineer to create sustainable climate tech, but I hadn't thought about the impact of unions on creating sustainable infrastructure. Thanks for exploring such important ideas in this video. I also really love the horror genre and greatly enjoyed all the ideas you touched on, they definitely have me thinking.
