Had the pleasure of teaching this to Zee at AireCon in Manchester! You said loved it then, and glad it’s stuck with you since then Zee. Thank you for the lovely review folks. ❤️
I absolutely love this game. The combos and the variety of unique cards. I just find it satisfying in the end. Also, great at 2 player if that is your primary count.
Yes Zee!! I agree its so charming, i love the simplicity but still has the crunch with those decision. Lets call It Middle Ages Combo, thats better right....
Been playing this a lot on BGA and I really like it. I agree with Zee, I think there's enough where you have to choose whether to take your ideal card but leave the messenger on a row where there's a good card for your opponent to take, or maybe spend a key to remove those cards from the game completely.
At first look during Essen prep I was so giving this a pass, then I came across enough buzz for me to take a closer look and I'm really happy I did (and waited as long as I did in line for it, lol). This is such a satisfying quick puzzle to throw in at pretty much any point in the game night. I don't usually gravitate to a lot of "fillers" because I just don't feel like they give enough satisfaction, even at the short time they occupy the table. But this one does. It's quick, snappy and it's really satisfying.
I really enjoy how each new card adds a end game scoring condition so your constantly adapting to try to score with every card. great quick game. love it.
Played this game a week ago and absolutely love it! The only negative is that it doesn't have a solo mode so I can play it even when I don't have anyone to play it with lol
Seems like it is a bit like Button Shy's Wonder Tales although I dont have either, yet. Wonder Tales is on order from GF Summe Reprint Campaign. What do you think?
I can kind of see where you are seeing similarities, but they don't feel the same to me. Wonder Tales is placing cards into a shared grid, whereas each player has their own in Castle Combo. The cards also combo in more generic ways, based on type or having the coin bag instead of specific named cards. This makes Castle Combo more about finding high scoring combos and in Wonder Tales all the combos are listed on the cards and it's about controlling the positive ones and forcing the negative ones on your opponent. I don't feel like I'm battling the other players in Castle Combo as much as I do in Wonder Tales, since they can take the specific card I need or flip cards to their side, etc. Castle Combo also has the flexibility to play up to 5 players, but is still great at 2. Both are good card games worth owning in my opinion.
@tabletalkreviews That totally makes sense. Castle Combo is on my watch list, but right now I have too many unplayed games around to add any more to my collection (unless I see it for a good price...😅🤔) Thanks for the detailed response.
I wonder if Zee finds that this game gives him similar feels to Caper, which is one of his favorites. I had that impression while watching.

No theme? Come on, guys. It's about the inhabitants (each card is unique) of a castle, not castles themselves. And the way the cards interact with each other is great. There's lots of theme regarding the relationship between these roles. It's not obvious at first glance, but a lot of these contain little puns as well. Take the prince and the stable boy for one, why the gravedigger can be found in the upper class cards, or why the best use of the king and queen is in combination with the executioner.
You have to have an above average active imagination to find card games thematically immersive since most are abstract and puzzly in nature. This one looks no different in that respect.
"a lot of theme" is a stretch but I do agree the character abilities are often amusing and well integrated - that doesn't happen in a game with "no theme"
@@montanaricello there is also a limited number of cards you play, in Faraway each player will play only 8 cards and each card will score depending on what cards you played in your tableau.
i agree about the name. But, i'm quite sure that the name château combo was an intended lame pun with the name of a city (pontault-combault) (-ault being pronouced as 'o')
The problems with the name, must be a native English speaker thing i guess... for me as a non-native speaker, it just sounds nice and has a nice alliteration....💁♂️
Funny you like the art and dislike the theme. I hate the art in this game, and art is usually one of the big things to draw me into a game. I think the theme works well enough; most of the card names and abilities make sense to me when I see them -- and there's little references between cards like the prince and the pauper. It is a decent game, but I would enjoy it more if the art was different.
Ugh, I'm gonna be that annoying guy rn. I feel like these cards have synergies and not combos. Maybe most people think differently, though. Or don't care, lol.
Tried it on BGA and didnt really get the hype. Found myself pretty bored rather quickly. Ended up just buying and placing cards randomly trying to end the game as soon as possible and won lol. Love combo games like Vale of Eternity too.
Vale of Eternity has some very cool combo potential. I really liked finding ways to repeat useful effects and score points from high value cards without paying to play those cards. Vale has some "take that" style abilities that I'm not sure everyone would like though, such as stealing points, destroying opponent's cards, etc.

Once again, it's confirmed why Zee is my go-to on card games. ... Tom is the guy when it comes to euros.
But they both gave it good scores
For euro I would go for Mike
Zee has cost me so much money on card games. At least this one doesn't need to be imported from Germany like some others on his top 10 lists.
For Euro I would go to Wendy (and Chris) 😊
Nope Tom is for light games, not euros
Glad it resonated with you, Zee! It's one of our favorite releases for this year as well 😊
I absolutely love this game. The combos and the variety of unique cards. I just find it satisfying in the end.
Also, great at 2 player if that is your primary count.
Also, yes Zee! Totally deserves that score.
Fully agree with you, Zee. This one is special. Sticks out above the rest.
💯

Love this game. It is available to play on BGA 💜🧡

Cool. It looked interesting enough to preorder a few weeks ago. Looking forward to getting it in.

Castle Combo is also one of my favorite games of the year. It's so eloquently designed. Simple, fast, and infinitely replayable. I love it.
I really like the art and the game play. So good!! I’m with Zee on this one :)
TEAM ZEE. 💪

There is a simple solo variant on BGG you might enjoy.
Zee is not the only one that thinks this one’s great. Broken Meeple loved it too
I've only played it on BGA but it's sooo addictive. I love it.
Im surprised Zee didnt bring up Paper Tales as a comparison. Game looks great.
Same here! Paper Tales is so solid, but I feel it’s mostly forgotten by now.
This has been so fun to play on Board Game Arena.
Mr Vasel rocking the rubby ducky tie! 🦆

@@samirjafri191 Castle Combo is on Board Game Arena, if you want to play it for free.

Odd that you didn't compare it to Village Green. That's one of my favorite games.
Am I wrong or is this practically what one does in Everdell with the cards?
It gives me Faraway vibes
How do they compare ?
@@montanaricello there is also a limited number of cards you play, in Faraway each player will play only 8 cards and each card will score depending on what cards you played in your tableau.
when Zee speaks, i listen.
YRO coming out from play to z is also a 3x3 combo vale of eternity-like game

'Castle Combo' happens in 'Middle Ages'. The next game will just be called 'Stone Huts'.
A great game.
If only it was available somewhere
Would have been nice to zoom a bit closer on the game overview...
Fantasy Realms meets Cat lady

This is…just a game. Nothing unique, but not bad. Just so many games now that you should probably use your time on one of them.

Should have called it Middle Age Matchup

I prefer Marvel Remix for the same feeling.
From the looks of it, a run-of-the-mill tableau builder, very well executed, but ultimately themeless and boring
