Measuring the absolute cost, the city I live in is actually a tiny bit more expensive than Tokyo, even though it is actually still pretty cheap for a German town of largeish size. There is an online tool you can use to calculate your cost to live in different places, which we used to find that out. However, after seeing that the average income of an engineer is about half as much in Japan, Tokyo quickly seems quite expensive again.
Tokyo is one of the cities with the greatest income inequality in Japan. Probably on minimum wage they will spend most of their income on rent and food. But, well, it's also a city where you can make money if you have the skills to earn a high income. Because it's the capital and economic centre of Japan.
I love your videos!! We plan to visit Japan next year and it's so helpful to hear the generic costs of daily life. Also, it's so fun to hear you speak Japanese! I don't know much, but you sound great! 🎉
I love the theme, one thing I'd love to know is a rough breakdown of how much goes to food/living/entertainment. And at what point you'd consider moving elsewhere (in Tokyo).
Happy Birthday! 🎉 would love a video about montly expenses! Not sure what everyone else thinks but would be great to have the conversion to usd straight away when u show the item and then again at the end when you sum the day. Would help me a lot! 😊
Happy Birthday, wishing you many more 🎉 - also I look forward to moving to Japan after uni so these videos help me get a sense of daily spending and also helps me plan more as I binge your videos 😅
Allison I have been watching your videos for a few years now. I have now been to Japan twice and am studying abroad in Osaka next year. I wanted to say thank you for inspiring me to travel solo and study in Japan. Your videos have brought me a lot of comfort and advice ♡
Thanks for sharing the typical daily life stuff. I think that's great for people to see. It's not all anime and temples and sushi every day. I used to just think of ¥100 as $1 in my head when I lived near Osaka years ago. That's essentially how it's treated as a local. So, not considering the current exchange rate, which is always changing, it felt like you spent roughy $300 for a week. That's not too bad.
Visiting the konbini that often doesn't surprise me really, it's super convenient and you're certainly not the only one! Damn do miss the late familymart visits... I spend way more than that equivalent on food and fun out here really, this just seems super liveable!
that's about what we spend as a couple with no pets or kids in Eastern Europe. Gives me hope that we'll manage just fine in Japan 😌 thanks for sharing!
Thank you for posting this! Very informative. California's gotten so expensive, my husband and I have good jobs but with food and living expenses being double how much is used to be, it's still a struggle. Not to mention rent😭
Alison, what is your marginal tax bracket %, and rental cost for a comparable studio in your area?. Likely cost of living is similar to Toronto but I’m curious about your tax and rental price . A studio in central Toronto will likely be $247k yen… If you crave sugar eat animal fat, sugar craving will go away…. Just got back from a few weeks in Japan and have been enjoying your videos. Thank you!
Thanks again for the help with Allison appreciate and for when I’m coming here hopefully to stay somehow, I’ll try to remember to do this like you do as well and could of course be helpful for what I should spend and what I should not been starting to do that now thinking what I should do where I am in America in New Jersey, anyway thanks again and do more helpful videos like this for sure, 🙌🙌🙌
Happy birthday to you Allison ❤. If I compare my life in where a live vs Japan i think I'll move to Japan cuz it's cheap to me and yes i wouldn't mind seeing a nother video prior to this subject ur content is so entertaining yet informative , thanks for sharing ,love u ❤
Subscribed because a daily life expenses are interesting and similar breakdowns of costs of basically just living even the monthly expenses be interesting
i dont think it makes sense to include the residence tax if you're not going to include things like rent, health insurance, etc. either include all of the big, repeating expenses or none at all imo. but this was an interesting video! you spend a lot haha. im a student here so i spend way less because i dont have a job. other than rent, 95% of my expenses are on food, probably upwards of 2000yen a day. but i eat a lot.. 2 meals at home and 2 outside. other big expenses are 8000yen a month on the gym and my 6 month commuter pass. i relate to the extra expenses when going to the office. back when i lived in canada and worked, on office days i would spend around $10 on lunch and another $3 on coffee. and the round trip was an additional $15. wfh is so much cheaper because im not allured into spending money on things i dont need to spend money on (e.g. i can make coffee and food at home)
I think you are spending too much at the convenience stores. I used to do that not anymore and I’m saving a lot of money. I make my own food for work and try not too buy too many coffees, the money I save I can buy stuff that I want. 😊 HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉🎉🎉🎉
I'm not French, but as an American, I pronounce Croquette as /ˌkrōˈket/. Saying "Crowket", in the manner we typically butcher the correct pronunciation of French words. Also, wishing you a bbelated happy Birthday, Allison!
Hi Allison, Awesome video, as usual. Please do the rent and utilities comparison. I think that would be interesting fo ra lot of people. For comparison a 3LDK in Okinawa (Nago) is around 75000 Yen.
It seems a little expensive however you did get new shoes. Me and my partner live off the equivalent of 45,000 yen per week in New Zealand. Happy birthday ^.^
Fellow internet corespondents: Be advised that Japanese currency, bills/notes were recently replaced with "new" money. So some vending machines, particularly those at filling station only accept the old notes. Seems it costs upwards of a million yen to convert them to accept both the old and new notes. So thanks a million Bank of Japan, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
Thanks for sharing Allison! Out of curiosity, do the grocery stores there have organic/healthy sections like they do in the States? Or is that not really a thing over there?
I use my Suica card for EVERYTHING. I love how it's accepted almost everywhere. Don't sweat the conbini trips, heck, I go to one sometimes 3 times a day. lol
Hello, I'm just watching your videos. I am thinking of doing a master's degree in Japan. How long does our work permit last after graduation? Also, was it difficult for you to find a job? I would be glad if you can answer
You have 6 months to find a job, but it’s common to start looking for a job even over a year before graduation so it’s not too hard if you have qualifications:)
II tanjoubi! Omoshirokatta! Arigatogozaimashita! Would be interested in monthly expenses and also income, etc. taxes. Didn't know about residents tax, but maybe that's like city/state taxes in the US?
You mention going to the convenience store a lot, but is it when compared to a typcial Japanese person of similar age? Seems like its the goto place for anything and everything. Unlike here in North America where its more of a desperation stop for a variety of reasons.
A Brit male with the grunge look wouldn't dream of paying those prices. A cheaper price is a phone call away or round the corner. 11,000 for a pair of shoes; gimme a break. If I paid 4,000 yen I'd think I'd been ripped off. As example, a 70cl bottle of Cutty Sark in C... z Home is 980 with tax. In the supermarket the self-same product is 1420 plus tax. OTC medication is a lot cheaper too. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
Resident tax ("juminzei" or 住民税) is for all those living in Japan and who are eligible to pay. I.e. employed people or people earning a certain amount. It's not just for foreign residents. Depending on whether or not you have to file your own taxes it's either taken out of your salary every month, or you get slips to pay at the convenience store. If you're an employee at a company, you'll pay something called "unemployment insurance" (雇用保険). I'm not too sure of the details for taking it out. But I'm pregnant in Japan at the moment, and this insurance will cover my maternity and child care leave once I have my baby.
Wow very interesting video, I didn't think about the city transportation adding up (I guess I don't know how subway cards work, for some reason i thought it was flat fee 😆) anyway very cool and monthly or quarterly expense video would be really interesting since it sounds like Japan has a lot fees that might be slightly different to what they do in other countries too
My last video as a 27 y/o because I turned 28 yesterday 😵💫!!!! Ahhh!!!!!!!
Happy birthday for yesterday 😀🎉🎉🎊
Happy birthday Allison for yesterday 🥳🎂
Happy Birthday, 22nd!
Hope 28 brings exciting adventures!! 🎉
Happy Birthday Allison 🎉
Oh definitely make a video about taxes, utilities, rent etc. I'm looking into moving there and it would be very helpful to see what is to be expected.
Yes please to this!
"I have no responsibilities and I do what I want." Legitimately that sounds amazing haha!! Great vid and also HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :3
🥳🥳🥳

Hi!! I would love a follow up video about rent and stuff :)
Visiting the konbini that often doesn't surprise me really, it's super convenient and you're certainly not the only one! Damn do miss the late familymart visits... I spend way more than that equivalent on food and fun out here really, this just seems super liveable!
Excellent idea to have rental party rooms.
Interesting video idea, thank you.
🎉🎉🎉🎉Happiest of birthday wishes to you!!!!❤
that's about what we spend as a couple with no pets or kids in Eastern Europe.

Sorry for the late message... Happy birthday, Allison!😃🎉🎂
P.S. Your Japanese is really good!👍️
Luckily the konbini food is of a higher quality than most American convenience stores.😅

Just got back from a few weeks in Japan and have been enjoying your videos. Thank you!
Before Covid I used to buy 1-2 coffees every day and it really adds up 😂. I also randomly buy games I want. Nice choice in games 😊

Me and my partner just went to Japan for two weeks and now we want to live there it's so much better than England 😢
That was interesting and I would say what you spend in a week is pretty average. I live in Munich and also spend as much!
Hi Allison, Awesome video, as usual. Please do the rent and utilities comparison. I think that would be interesting fo ra lot of people. For comparison a 3LDK in Okinawa (Nago) is around 75000 Yen.

Especially seasonal stuff ☺️

Why do Japanese say 「ランチ」for lunch, and not 「ちゅしょく」? (Same for ‘lunch time’ ?)
Hi “Chushoku ちゅうしょく” sounds a bit more formal like we say that when you have a lunch with your boss or in those kind of not too casual situations!
II tanjoubi! Omoshirokatta! Arigatogozaimashita! Would be interested in monthly expenses and also income, etc. taxes. Didn't know about residents tax, but maybe that's like city/state taxes in the US?

"I just can't stop getting sweet treats... it really keeps me going through the day" What I say to myself every day 😆

That resident tax is always painful 💸
😞😞
I live in tokyo 😊❤
Interesting video. But you do have some responsibilities ie: rent and other bills.
Can you plz make a vid for a rent month cost
What was that first shop with the white plates with blue painting design?
afternoon tea :)
❤🗻⛩🥰I Love your Videos! What is your fav Manga or Anime? I just subscribed! 🥰🥰🥰 Yay!
How interesting, I did not know that you'd rent a room to have a party in, instead of having it at your house!
God Frijoles suuucks, I wish we had Chipotle here
I would cry if we got a chipotlee 🥲
Bill vlog please ❤
That doesn't seem excessive.
What is the average salary in Japan ? Thank you 🙏🏻
Is a residents tax for foreign workers or non-Japanese workers? Is this a type of unemployment benefit if a situation occurs?
Resident tax ("juminzei" or 住民税) is for all those living in Japan and who are eligible to pay. I.e. employed people or people earning a certain amount. It's not just for foreign residents. FFXIV player! Do you play on JP servers?
Are you putting any money away for retirement?
The mention of FF14 was an immediate reason to follow 😂
❤
HEY YOU STAY THERE FOREVER, WE WON'T COME.
Wow very interesting video, I didn't think about the city transportation adding up (I guess I don't know how subway cards work, for some reason i thought it was flat fee 😆) anyway very cool and monthly or quarterly expense video would be really interesting since it sounds like Japan has a lot fees that might be slightly different to what they do in other countries too
Extravagant has to be your middle name.
Can you do a video where you only speak Japanese?
So you said you will compare in dollars, but you ended up with 91000 odd yen.
So compared to your salary, what percentage?
Disappointing video.
Belated Happy Birthday Alison, I find your videos fascinating! Love to see how people live everyday life in other cultures. Keep it up. Xx🎉
Happy birthday! 🎉
