One of my favorite lines is, *_"ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT!"_*
And it says "Y'all dont want to listen you just dance" or something like that which also indicates that we dont listen to the meaning behind the song and just dance to it.
The "Shake it like a polaroid picture" line needs more credit. He's basically saying "do it wrong the way you were always told to". It's a harmfull treatment of polaroids we get from pop culture that we just take as fact. No one else taught us any better because the older generations expected us to know these things naturally.
Bro exactly.. it makes me think tho, when you have kids what’s the right approach? Should we tell them everything? Cause I have a lot to say 😅 but in a way I feel it can also be bad.
The line has unexpected depth to it. We tend to do things wrong even when we know how we should behave. Maybe it is to show that we are different? Why do we tend to drink too much with friends, even though we swore to never do it again... As the song told us: ... why should love be an exception? We repeat mistake after mistake, only to realize that we have cemented a relationship into casual togetherness instead of love. What will you do when you realize that the love is gone? Will you just continue to pretend and ignore your feelings? The song describes the moment he realized that he can no longer pretend anymore. The most intense bit of artistic description is the repeating of words as in a way of stuttering. It invokes the idea of crying where a person cannot articulate correct sentences anymore. Just imagine the "hey ya" is crying. In the end he just continues the relationship against better judgement. Because feeling something is better than felling nothing at all. *No happy end, just tears.*
This was the only coherent line for me when I first listened to the song and it has stuck with me ever since. I'm not sure what it says, Could be anything from how the past generation had different values and put more effort into maintaining a family unit even though the couple in question were deeply unhappy, to a mother and father just complacently sticking together because they don't know how to function if they are not together. In some ways the mother and father feel like an inspiration for the young couple, but the young couple is miserable and the guy is using his parent's marriage as an example of staying together which leads me to believe that his parents are also deeply unhappy but just carry on together regardless. Which would make them an unbearably sad example to follow and does not bode well for the younger generation.
The idea that this song is sad or dark is actually a bit of a misunderstanding. It actually has a really positive message. Andre explained that the song is about relationships in the 2000s and how there was an expectation and tradition that couples stay together in unhappy relationships even if they didn't want to According to Andre himself Hey Ya is about saying "Fuck it. Live your life." So basically don't stay in unhappy relationship instead, break away from tradition and othe people's expectations, and do what makes you happy That's why Hey Ya is the chorus because after every verse what they're really saying is fuck it don't stay in that relationship leave and let yourself be happy. It's also why everyone in the music video is happy and dancing because they're doing what makes them happy and not following tradition just because they're told to Personally I think that's a great possitive message and fits perfectly with the upbeat nature of the song
This is beautiful. I wrote the script for this video for a class about 6 years ago and never even considered this point of view. Now as I get older that all makes sense. Thank you for sharing this insightful comment.
@@ArianaAlexis Thank god. The feeling of the song had been ruined for me until I read this comment. I think the only reason I liked the song was because it was happy and jovial, because I was always so used to hearing constantly depressing songs. It crushed me to learn the "true" meaning. But this thread made me believe again. I think one of my beliefs, is that, though I like to hear the message of the writer, I'm also not going to listen any more if all it does is make me sad. Being sad is a good emotion, but people push it too far and then people stop listening.
Glad someone did this topic. It has a deeper meaning. I always thought that he went to the club to find someone else and forget about his relationship but music is subjective.
I guess it means that we believe that the attraction to the partner stays forever in a relationship. But the truth is that after some time we don't love our partner as much as at the beggining of the relationship. After like lets say 20 years we're just gonna be like close friends to each other. The song propably says if we don't feel good and are in a toxic relationship we should just break up or get divorced, that would be way better for us (most of the time). Or maybe it's also about how people are "disapointed" that the attraction doesn't last forever as they expected so they just break up.

Been listening to Hey Ya alot recently since I hadn't heard it since I was a kid. Now I know why my Mom was listening to it during my parents divorce xp
Everywhere at the End of Time is an album, but your point still stands. I have heard the last 6 minutes excluding the rest of it, and it is already grueling to listen to, I can’t imagine how it would feel after listening to the other 6 hours
*yes both are sad as heck but i think you have forgotten literally every vocaloid song ever created* -sry this is a whole different fandom but there are songs way sadder then these to not saying they aren’t sad just saying-
This was a perfect way to make a Hit, while telling a message. They made it look like everything was happy and “Alright” but if you listen, you’ll understand.
My brother told me Hey-Ya was actually depressing but never told me why, and that Andre was directly saying to the audience "y'all don't wanna hear me, y'all just wanna dance", but I... you know... did just wanna dance. Outkast is not a pop band tho, but you probs learned that now that this video's been up for over three years.
Im glad someone is actually offering an interpretation of the song. I've seen so many comments point out the "you don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance" and say "bruuuuuuh this song is sooooo deeeeep" without actually saying why its deep.
Lemon Demon is sort of an example of this, the beats are catchy and upbeat, but the lyrics in some of the songs can be pretty dark (When He Died and Cabinet Man are great examples of this)
Beautiful. Loved this. I remember as a kid hearing the lyrics of my sister CDs and being sad or befuddled by them. My sisters usually mostly fell into the beat/melody/etc and I was like 'whaaaaa' watching them happy and singing and dancing about such strange or heavy stories. My family knew me as an accidental buzzkill all the time.
I had a conversation with my cousin about the lyrics, it’s his favorite song. It got him through my aunt and uncles divorce. He said he knew what the lyrics meant, and how ironic it was that he liked the song that much.

@@whirled_peas But most of it is really wordplay or vocal effects that doesn't carry a significant semantic meaning but instead provides emphasis. Sure, these things warrant analysis, but it's not hiding anything... in fact, it's bringing it out more for the ears of those actually listening
@@makatsue4598 Kinda echoing my other comment, but it's my opinion that a person who doesn't understand the meaning of the song was simply not processing the words in their brains. It was true for me, having only heard the song passingly on the radio growing up, and for my girlfriend. I showed her the song, she seemed somewhat dismissive. I brought up one of the lyrics as a point that it's a song worth listening to, and as it turns out, she really didn't even try to listen to the words, because she didn't actually catch the line I was referring to. I think it probably takes a couple listens to really get the full picture of the song, just because the wordplay and vocal effects can throw a listener off, but again, that's not really hiding any meaning, and in fact it's just kinda flagging it up for a listener to pay attention to...

The song isn't just about love, it's about the band, they had been drifting apart creatively and this was their last album, this song is way deeper than most people know.
There's a lot about this song I like. I love the lyrics and the fact that the melody is so catchy, very happy and playful in contrast to the message. When he gets to the line, "we're not happy here," it's acapela. The music stops for those brief seconds before picking up and going into the chorus. It's then we get the aside. He knows you're not listening to him. Or maybe you are, so he gives you what you want in the next verse. He tells you to dance, he sings the cheesy lines about sex rap and hip hop are supposed to be all about. "Forget what I just said and get busy." The song knows.
I remember seeing hey ya on the video I loved it I was not paying attention to the lyrics but it was my favorite video coming out that time I was in middle School and yes big boi I like the way you move came out the same time I love both of the videos see they legends so salute to outkast for blessing us on that album

Hey ya! You know, this "modus operandi" is very common here in Argentina. In songs of musical genders called "cuarteto" and "cumbia" which are always happy danceable rhythmically, but their lyrics sometimes ARE NOT. There are many examples, such as a man that asks his doctor to take care of his wife since he's just been told he has a terminal disease. But I let you a link to the most disturbing example so far. A song about the rape and murder of a girl child, based on a true, well known case. You may wanna translate it but it's just so you can hear how upbeat it is for a song speaking about such a sensitive topic, to say the least. ruclips.net/video/xcD_mo_fT1g/видео.html
Being the weeb here, but artist TUYU (ツユ)also has a lot of songs based around dark and depressing ideas but make it sound like a catchy song. Some examples include "Even tears withered", "loser girl", and "I'm getting on the bus to the other world, see ya". Would definitely recommend if you like JPOP or are just interested in listening to it.
About a week ago, I heard this song playing on the radio, and it made me realize just how profound it truly is. It got me thinking about creating a Spotify playlist based on this deceivingly catchy theme. Interestingly, the other three songs that came to mind, which seem to resonate with this one, are Train Vain, Semi-Charmed Life, and Lorde's Perfect Places. It's amusing that you mentioned two of them in your video. Now, getting back to 'Hey Ya!' itself, I believe the lyrics are incredibly clever; in fact, I've been listening to it daily ever since. As someone who's been married for nearly a decade, I feel this song hits differently. It doesn't portray a relationship marked by hatred but rather one that's become stagnant and unexciting, leading to the protagonist's insecurity. The contrast between 'I know for sure' and 'the thought alone' that she might wander or leave devastates him. When he expresses gratitude for 'mom and dad sticking together,' it hints that their unity allowed him to exist. The 'you think you got it' part, to me, symbolizes the challenges that persist in a relationship even when you believe everything is fine. My favorite part extends to the chorus, where he presents a somewhat nihilistic view of relationships - an unrealistic perspective, as genuine connections usually involve emotions. I suspect the guy never moved on from that relationship. The last part, which I used to care for the least, holds significance as well. 'What's cooler than being cool? (ice cold)' delves into the societal expectation for men to be emotionally distant, pragmatic, and devoid of feelings. Anything other than that is seen as a sign of weakness. Meanwhile, the girls' part highlights the hypersexualization of women. The unintended consequence of these gender stereotypes is rather disheartening, as it encourages men to acquire impressive cars to attract women, who are seemingly reduced to pursuing men with nice cars solely for physical pleasure. All of this is wrapped up in a neat early 2000s pop package, making it a true masterpiece!"

I've always been haunted by this tune because it was kinda the soundtrack of some of the darkest days in my life. Simply because I had it as my ringtone at the time and have always associated it with that horrible time in my life. Understanding the true meaning of the lyrics after watching this brings a whole other level of darkness to it.
Kinda :P A lot of people say it's like Pumped up Kicks, but I think it's slightly different in the sense that Pumped Up Kicks still has an ominous tone to it but this song just sounds like pure joy.
Love songs like this. I can’t remember if I was thinking of this dog or a different when it comes about upbeat songs with depressing meanings. Maybe Tears for Fears song.

Jeez. This song is like a foreigner swearing and insulting you but doing it in a pleasant tone and with friendly gestures so it seems like they're complimenting you.
5 minutes in this video and I was like "How could I miss a Tenor Sax?????" lol then you clarified it. Also this has been one of my all time favorite songs when I was young, catchy tune my gym teacher made us practice rhythm and dancing to in 6th grade. I wouldn't say the meaning is very "hidden" though, its pretty straight forward and doesn't disguise anything with metaphors. Its just said in a very catchy and pop music kind of way lol.
I was wondering why there hasn't been much discussion on this topic already! The melody also sounds a little somber in some parts too, despite the upbeat notes that cover the rest of the song.
My best guess for why not many people have talked about this song is because it came out way before RUclips and making content was a thing. So when RUclips did become popular, people just kinda forgot about this song

I got bored one day and started writing, wound up creating a couple that fell out of love but stayed together for fear their child wouldn’t get both parents. The mother’s parents are the ones keeping them together by complimenting them as a family, only seeing how ‘happy’ they are. Reminds me of blues travelers hook. Same time, music or any art form that is somehow so aesthetically pleasing on a nearly objective level, is one of the few things that random strangers can have a shared positive visceral experience over, just for a moment, before words label and claim these feelings. However that moment of shared joy without words or meaning will change the world for the better. It’s a start
Eden did a cover of this song and gets the tone right for the lyrics and I hope anybody reading this checks him out. He debuted his first studio album in 2017 and doing more music!
I love The Blanks’ version of this, where it’s so whimsical and sweet, which I think strikes an even bigger contrast. Strange that it was chosen to set a wedding to in Scrubs.
"Hidden Meaning" > "If what they say is, 'nothing is forever,' what makes loves the exception?" > "Why are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here?" > "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance." Bruh this phenomenon is like 95% of middle school and high school girls listen to "Habits" by Tove Lo, not really listening to even the _damn chorus_ for what it means. It sounds powerful, but the type of tone the tune presents makes it seem more of something about empowerment when the lyrics rather are... uh. Not sending such a similar message.
I get it that it has a sad meaning but I love this song so much. I know in a part of a 21 pilots song it talks about how nobody listens to the meaning and they just want to listen to it because it sounds happy. It's funny because that part became everyone's favorite part of that song since it sounded good. Also I totally think this video is true because in one of the lines of the song it says "thank god for mom and dad for sticking to together but we dont know how."

With how you analyzed it, makes me reflect to how it usually is with ska bands. Two that comes to mind are Streetlight Manifesto and E-ska-pe. Jovial tunes (with some songs) but some heavy lyrics.

It's one of my favourite lines in the entire song!
It's depressing.
This song is about the love story between The Most High God and his “bride” Israel. The hook is directly calling the creator! This is America.

The "Shake it like a polaroid picture" line needs more credit. He's basically saying "do it wrong the way you were always told to". It's a harmfull treatment of polaroids we get from pop culture that we just take as fact. No one else taught us any better because the older generations expected us to know these things naturally.
That line was on the Andre’s head during the process

Squid Inc. what does that mean
@@jefee4352 Increasing divorce rates.
Fattjefee single mom household
I though it says "thank god for mom and dad for sticking TWO together because we don't know how"
The idea that this song is sad or dark is actually a bit of a misunderstanding. It actually has a really positive message. Andre explained that the song is about relationships in the 2000s and how there was an expectation and tradition that couples stay together in unhappy relationships even if they didn't want to
According to Andre himself Hey Ya is about saying "Fuck it. Live your life." So basically don't stay in unhappy relationship instead, break away from tradition and othe people's expectations, and do what makes you happy
That's why Hey Ya is the chorus because after every verse what they're really saying is fuck it don't stay in that relationship leave and let yourself be happy. It's also why everyone in the music video is happy and dancing because they're doing what makes them happy and not following tradition just because they're told to
Personally I think that's a great possitive message and fits perfectly with the upbeat nature of the song
This is beautiful. I wrote the script for this video for a class about 6 years ago and never even considered this point of view. Now as I get older that all makes sense. Thank you for sharing this insightful comment.

I think the only reason I liked the song was because it was happy and jovial, because I was always so used to hearing constantly depressing songs.

Thanks for the watch! Glad you liked the video!

I got that idea from “(something about thanking mom and dad) for sticking two together cuz we don’t know how”.
Oh my god....for all this time i didn't know about this....
MR Bobby Kebobby This song is about the love story between The Most High God and his “bride” Israel. The hook is directly calling the creator!

I always thought this was a sad song because how melancholy it feels and the fact that they play this during Farewell parties.
My baby don't mess around
Because she loves me so
This I know fo sho! We’re the lyrics that always stuck out for me
Reminds me of blues travelers hook.
Holy shit!! Off to hear that!! Drugs is my fucking shit!!
is he the dude who made xo
Zeo yep his cover is rly amazing tho
I love The Blanks’ version of this, where it’s so whimsical and sweet, which I think strikes an even bigger contrast. Strange that it was chosen to set a wedding to in Scrubs.
Who’s here after the dancing duck meme started growing?
Lol i got gere fron that
The motion of shake it like a polaroid picture is a hand waving goodbye.
I bet hey ya requiem’s ability would be the actual meaning and hey ya would be how the song sounds
"Hidden Meaning"
> "If what they say is, 'nothing is forever,' what makes loves the exception?"
> "Why are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here?"
> "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance."
"""""""Hidden""""""" Meaning"
Hey Ya is about as subtle as Pumped Up Kicks. The only thing hiding the meaning is not hearing the lyrics correctly.
Did someone else seek back to 4:45 for that “superficial trap”?😂
Me lol
Oh...this is sad... *proceeds to watch duck dance to Hey Ya*

bro the playlist automatically played this video, I have never heard this song before, but I appreciate that analysis.
Bruh this phenomenon is like 95% of middle school and high school girls listen to "Habits" by Tove Lo, not really listening to even the _damn chorus_ for what it means.
I could listen to your very articulate voice all day. So very great to understand every word you say. No robot bs. Like, subscribed and shared. Happy you showed up in my feed.

Always loved the deeper meaning of the song.
I canNOT believe you didn't mention Pumped Up Kicks when talking about happy songs with sad lyrics
Pumped up kicks is the perfect example for that
With how you analyzed it, makes me reflect to how it usually is with ska bands. Two that comes to mind are Streetlight Manifesto and E-ska-pe.
Jovial tunes (with some songs) but some heavy lyrics.
Ms Jackson is another uplifting beat with sad lyrics but it’s less covert there
This is legit a really good video essay
its not a hidden meaning 🤨 youre just ignoring the lyrics. its not hard to hear or understand. its pretty blatant 😂 also
"rap is not pop, if you call it that then stop"
-Q-Tip
I disagre. The song gives no visual queue to the lyrics. Andre 3000 is a musical genius
That's why I love the line "Y'all don't wanna hear me you just wanna dance" and I love how in the music video they scream louder over that line so in the end you end up not even paying attention to the song which is even more proof and even crazier is that once you hear it in the song you'll never unhear it
Uh...there is...no rap in this song. Stop assuming all black music is rap wtf
pennyjpie it’s a rap song tho. Andre 3000 is a rapper
@@pennyjpie the verse is so rap though. rap can be melodic too.
it’s sad that some people don’t care about what the artist is going through. It shows a lot about how our society is in general.
