while discussing things with my dad on how i want the shop when we both get retired and moved to the same area i described this build without ever seeing it. now that i have seen it i know it can be done! thank you!
Sir - you are truly an artisan of Black Smithing. Just absolutely great to see someone take parts and pieces - building a piece of machinery that is then used in your art.
Dude.. you sold me on this. I've been looking for a power hammer for years now and I've been debating a press etc etc etc... great video. simple as that.
This is brilliant. I got to give it to ya, this is a solid press. I have really been wanting to get one, but living on a military retirement doesn't allow me some of the really good things. So i extremely happy that i found this video. Very well put together with great editing. Easy to follow and understand. Much appreciation and respect 🙏.
Thanks, now you've inspired me to build one of these. This is exactly why my wife hates it when I want something and decided to try and figure out how to build it. I will be obsessed until I get a press
I am running a little backwards but I am very glad that I found this video. Exactly what I am looking to do in the next couple of months. Unfortunately before I can build it I have to find a new shop till I find my permanent home.
Man that is nice. I have wanted one of those for years, but the budget won't allow for a new one. That works great, and with an assortment of dies, the sky is the limit. Keep up the great work
Man you are crafty as hell, that press is awesome!...I am in the process of building a 24 ton press, steel should be here some time next week, this video has got me fired up now!
SICK!!! I can't wait to start making steel hockey pucks !!! Thanks for making this video!! I got a lot from it that i used on my press, currently under way.
Awesome video and great presentation! How could 13 people dislike this video or the content....... unless they work for a company that makes Forging Presses and don't want people making their own.
some people hate the narration method i don't mind it and sometimes I preffer it I just soak it in better that way. its more work for the author but you gotta proof your work anyway might as well do it all then . however, it gets done, and long as it doe's we love you for the time you will never get back for doing this \B.D.F. never stop teaching.
Thanks slot for the video, it is the best one I've seen on making a hydraulic press for forging. I'll definitely be taking on this project in the future.
Really nice job on your video. I'm looking at options on building a press and hadn't given the log splitters much consideration until seeing your video.
Awesome work!! That is a great inspiration to anyone that wants a press, doesn’t want to buy one but wants to save money or is just getting started up or just loves to build. Love the channel. I watch all the time. Thanks
thats awesome good thinking. you have me sold on building one of those. iv been talking with an old blacksmith at work about making a forging press but kept trying to figure out how to make a fast one without having to spend lots of money on hydraulics and trial by fire. this is going to be my new project now that i just completed my 2x72 belt sander build.
I just ran across your channel and saw this video. I'm thinking of building a press like this and your video is EXCELLENT. I'm looking forward to watching some of your other videos. Thank you.
Damn brother...thats freaking innovate!!! I consider myself a bright guy, highly educated, but never in a million years could I have done that!!! Truly great work! TTT
awesome job! undoubtedly the best and most detailed conversion from log splitter to forging press video on youtube. wish i saw this earlier, seeing how i just bought a forging press.
Well done! great idea with the log splitter. just a bit of redesign of the table,...the splitting head from the original unit as a die, and you still have a decent sized log splitter
Wow - that is a terrific and powerful press Tim. That should work great for Damascus as you said plus a lot quieter than the power hammer. I think your so ready for the forged in fire competition!!! Booyah!
Hi Rick, I've already started putting together my first billit to put through it. Get ready it will be there soon, and you're absolutely right my annoy the neighbors project I've been working on just got a lot quieter. I'm not so sure about forged in fire but I am with you Booyah!!!! Thanks for checking it out my friend I'll talk to you soon take care.
Exellent video thats what I was looking for, is there any budy help me with the buying list, i am really like to know were to buy everyting to build one of those
😱😱😱 Holy Mohly! I'm envious Tim! Hah, I didn't expect to see you build one of these this soon, I was thinking we were gonna have to wait at least a number of months to see ya begin building one, but you are no joke when it comes to gettin things done. This just brought the suspense on waiting for new vids from ya to a whole new level. It really turned out great. Usually a lot of guys first homemade ones are built using the smaller bottle jack presses but I'm glad you didn't go that route as they seem to take quite a while to do the job. I've seen log splitters used before but they were always made from the horizontal type, I've never seen this vertical type though, which just seems so perfect for a relatively simple conversion into a great forge press. I'm pretty excited to see it in use in future projects. Thanks for adding a few demo shots at the end as well, I still get a kick outa watching billets beings squished in presses, there's just something so satisfying about it. Great job on putting this together brother. As always I look forward to seeing more from ya. Take care
What's up buddy. I never thought I would enjoy this thing so much that I've been finding everything in the shop that I can to squish, I just put my first Damascus billet together to run through it for next week's video I get to start working on it Thursday night and I can't wait, I checked out the bottle jack forge press idea and it just seemed to slow but this thing seems to move at the perfect speed, I think I got lucky in that respect. Thanks for checking out my friend take care and be safe.
.Another Quality well built machine from Big Dog Forge!!! Again you take scrap and turn it into Useful and Durable piece of equipment. I'll bet Scrappy is glad to have someone to help him out from time to time. GREAT Job my friend...!!!
Thanks Ol James, Scrappy and Floyd seem to be getting along quite well the three of us are currently working on a piece of Damascus, I never dreamed it could be this easy. Thanks for dropping by in checking it out my friend take care of yourself.
nice job! I picked up a log splitter for a couple bills at an auction, have a bunch of scrap and am doing a similar press. Your video gave me some things to think about.
I'm thinking about having a go at this one Tim, seams to have a good stroke and comfortable speed have been thinking about converting a press for some time. Have to start gathering the parts. Well done Tim.
Thanks Scott, good luck with the build I hope it goes well, if there's any questions I can answer please let me know. Thanks for watching and take care.
I'm about to build something I was thinking power hammer , but this, quiet, lighter over all weight , speed . wife was about to get an ear full, now she will never know. thanks for the vid.
This is exactly what I'm looking for! Perfect! Thank you for posting this!!! I like the idea of the RR track for your dies. My idea for my press uses the same thing. Thanks again!
Prewatch, I have the parts to build a 40t press. Well, everything but the motor, frame was donated and needs massive rework. This will help with final config. Thanks Tim, likely back post watch, first a phatty....😜
Great video.exectly what I was looking for. Now to save up the small fortune for steel and a bigger welding machine. But it will take a while before I can have a space of my own for one of these anyway. So for the present I will stick with my gas forge, 70 lb anvil, and my right arm swinging various hammers.
This thing is a great for production and doing large Damascus that the details are in those various hammers you speak of the presses and great thing to have and nothing can replace the amble a good arm. Thanks for tuning in and take care.
I recently purchased a forge press for the same reason as you, Damascus. Mine works really well and is a little more powerful than yours but also cost a lot more. I was very impressed with yours and if I had the chance to do this over I might just build one like yours, but alas mine is already in my shop. Lots of luck with yours and make sure you let us see some of the Damascus you make. As an aside mine came with 8 dies
Thank you Ralph I appreciate all the kind words, it sounds like you have a pretty cool press, as I move forward with this thing I may be reaching out to some of you guys who have been running these for a while for ideas on dies, thanks for checking out the video and take care.
Big Dog: That is a very "sanitary" installation. It looks as though you designed the press as you went which went very well indeed. Everything is neat and compact. The hands free pedal is especially cool. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Cool project! Seems to work really well. I would love a press. Only thing that worries me is high pressure hoses and hot steel at eye level... but as you imply, most of it can be protected, and there are special hoses to buy if you have the money...
Thanks Torbjörn, yes it does work very well and I'm very happy with it, but I hope to get the hoses and hydraulic system protected soon it makes me a little nervous as well so I'm saving my pennies to upgrade as soon as possible. Thanks for watching and take care.
Very good instructional video. I have a 22 ton splitter to convert. I'll use your video as a model. Thanks.
Glad it helped
right now, watching guys like you and alec steel run forges and do blacksmithing, is truly a learning experience
while discussing things with my dad on how i want the shop when we both get retired and moved to the same area i described this build without ever seeing it. now that i have seen it i know it can be done! thank you!
nice. no need for a longer version. simple and clear. make us something else wonderful.
Thanks Randal will do. Thanks for tuning in.
Im three years late but if i have a question i watch your channel to figure out how to make the stuff i need/want!!
Floyd the barber forging press. You are a true craftsman.
Sir - you are truly an artisan of Black Smithing. Just absolutely great to see someone take parts and pieces - building a piece of machinery that is then used in your art.
Never thought about using a log splitter as a press. Now I know where to start! Thanks!!
Thanks for watching Cameron.
That's pretty awsome...way to use your skills to accomplish a goal...always loved your work...
Thank you so much!
Dude.. you sold me on this. I've been looking for a power hammer for years now and I've been debating a press etc etc etc... great video. simple as that.
Very good job on your press, I made my own hammer ,grinder , forge, thanks to you I now know what press I will build
Watched it like 5 times. Very good vid, good knowledge. And your helper seems to be really helping. LOL
Thanks 👍
I am running a little backwards but I am very glad that I found this video. Exactly what I am looking to do in the next couple of months.
Unfortunately before I can build it I have to find a new shop till I find my permanent home.
Impressed by your press! Thanks for the video presentation! I will definitely show my boy this since he's an aspiring smith!
Man that is nice. I have wanted one of those for years, but the budget won't allow for a new one. That works great, and with an assortment of dies, the sky is the limit. Keep up the great work
Thanks Ron I appreciate the kind words. And thanks for watching.
Terrific press. Like the power, speed, and that pedal is killer! 👍
Hey Big Dog, thanks for the inspiration. I’m building a forge press for myself right now. Thanks bud.
I was just looking to buy a press now I can build it. thanks to you
Glad I could help
Nice job,I'm hoping to build the same style and yours is very simplified on how it's built.
Thanks for the video
No problem 👍
Looks great Tim, and at a great price. Love those salvage yards. Can't wait to see it in action on projects. Thanks for sharing with us.
You sir are a frigging wizard.
OMG what a great video! I have watched to many of the DIY presses, and this video was perfect for me. I will so make one, thanks!
Awesome video and great presentation! How could 13 people dislike this video or the content....... unless they work for a company that makes Forging Presses and don't want people making their own.
Great video, sir. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Thanks for watching!
press and a small power hammer, the perfect combo for a small shop.
Tim,I have got to say I need one of these yesterday.Someday, SomedayThanks again,Martin
Thank Martin, and thanks for tuning in.
thqat forge press rocks and thank you for the idea of used log splitter to be made into a forge press
Excellent build, Tim! You do a great job of narration and explaining exactly what you are doing and why. I learn something from every video you do.
Thanks Steve I really appreciate that, thanks for tuning in and take care.
I've been thinking about building one with a log splitter. Wasn't sure if it would be fast enough. Sure looks like it! Nice build, great video

Wow.. best looking "Log-Press" I have seen.. period

Thanks slot for the video, it is the best one I've seen on making a hydraulic press for forging. I'll definitely be taking on this project in the future.
Thanks ADmyrr, and thanks for checking out the video I do appreciate it, take care.

There’s fire safe hose sleeves available, as a cheap option
