Maason Smith Was A Good Pick Long/Short Term

- DT Maason Smith added much needed size and physical strength to the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive trenches. He was, however, considered a reach by some. Not us, here. It was more of a surprise because I expected a different type of player. Smith and his teammate at LSU, Jordan Jefferson, will both give the team what they've lacked: promising day 1 help in the depth of the trenches with upside.

Praying for you and your friends family Twigg sorry to hear about that.
I agree - most Rooks are NOT ready to step right in and have meaningful impact. Including most 1st and 2nd rounders.
Even the good ones just show flashes...make some plays or have a good game or 2...but are quiet an awful lot of the time too.
I get excited about our draft picks just like everyone else...but it's usually year 2 or 3 where they start to shine. Expecting rookies to have BIG impact is just setting yourself up for disappointment and not realistic.
5:30 Especially if he borrows some of Cam’s snacks
I don't think the issue is Maason Smith or a D-Tackle. It's that going into the offseason the entirety of football knows that the Jags O-line is trash. Going into the off season and draft the needs were guard, center, db's and edge. The issue is over-drafting somebody at a position of needs who is injury prone when you had a JPJ (G, C) and all you had to do was move up 4 spots. You had Renadro Green, a top press-man corner on the board and Roger Rosengarten a top right tackle who can play left tackle on the board. And Baalke take Smith. Then he take his teammate who would've gone 7th round or undrafted later in the draft at the same position.
We had more of an injury problem at o-line last year…. Those guys are back, including the hopeful developmental players. They drafted a lineman, who was a great player in the toughest conference and added a veteran center…. Why can’t we just enjoy the ride up?
I thought our biggest issues going into the draft were finding a #1 WR, interior O-Line, depth at OT, outside CB depth, interior D-Line depth and Edge rush depth, in that order. We totally ignored the interior O-Line. I pray Morse doesn’t miss any time, because Fortner and Shatley are not viable options to replace him or either of our starting OG’s. Personally, I hope we select all O-Linemen in the first and second days of the 2025 draft. We desperately need players there, especially with Robinson being an UFA after 2024 and Scherff likely gone after this season.
@@CleanFabCollective Ride up? Fortner shouldn’t even be on the team, he’s not good enough. He is one injury away from being the starting Center again. That is completely unacceptable. Shatley has gotten significantly worse over the past couple of seasons as well. These are not acceptable backups. Cam Robinson is an UFA after this season. So is Walker Little. Scherff is likely gone after this season as well. We had a chance to have someone in place to take over for Scherff in 2025 as well as being a viable backup enter for Morse and we blew it.
@@jayshupp5971 bro… chiiillll 😅 those development backups weren’t even those you mentioned … I remember names like cooper Hodges, feel like there’s one more I’m forgetting, and the guy we drafted this year… and there’s always next years draft and free agency period … yall just wanna be mad at something when it comes to this team. I can’t speak for other fan bases or they act like ours (the worst parts of) but damn….
@@jayshupp5971 and yeah “ride up” two winning seasons primed for a third…. I’m not one to be satisfied about that but I understand building a winner takes time, over time… whereas we’ve been used to losing… they are creating a culture that will have us in a respectable place for the next 20 years rather than that hit and miss crap were used to … so again enjoy the ride up, because I can guarantee that you’ve not been a fan as long as I have and I’m telling you we’re in the right track as a franchise, just be patient
Personally, I don't think this was a smart pick at all. Maason Smith does have an extremely high ceiling. My only issues with the pick is that I still believe he was taken a round too high and my biggest issue was that we had much bigger needs at CB and interior O-Line. Personally, I believe we would have been much better off taking an outside CB like Renardo Green with our second round pick. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Jarrian Jones and I am super happy that we drafted him, but I see him as a Nickle CB only. My area of concern with the CB position is, can Ronald Darby stay healthy? I don't like our depth at outside CB. I was very high on Renardo Green for that position. Back to Maason Smith. I love his potential as a pass rushing inside presence. I think he CAN be a good inside run-stuffer, but he has a lot of work to do in that area. He also seems to play "lazy" at times, which frankly, concerns me. I like drafting fairly "safe" players in the first 3 rounds of the draft and Smith is a big gamble. He's definitely not a "safe" pick. He has a very high ceiling, but a very low floor as well. I just think there were smarter choices to be made at that position, especially when figuring in that some of his issues have to do with keeping him motivated. With that said, I still like this pick way more than what we did taking Jordan Jefferson at pick #116. That selection still angers me. I don't see anything positive about that pick. Jefferson is useless as a pass rusher and despite constantly hearing about how much strength he displayed in the bench press, he is not very good against the run.
Nah i wanted both Jarrian Jones and Renardo. We got the press man outside corner and slot corner. You could've gotten Jones in the 4th with Javon Foster instead of Jordan Jefferson and still taking this Smith guy in the end of the 3rd.
We were not going Corner dude just let it rest. They brought Darby in here for a reason and Trent had already said prior to the draft that he thought the Corner depth in the draft was really good. You don’t know if Smith would have been there. Dlinemen started to fly off the board when Smith was picked.
Maybe they didn’t know they wasn’t physical because they was practicing against the equally not physical dline.
Wasn't Tyson Campbell a second round pick?
Oh and don't forget Daryl Smith being a second rounder now that I hear ya mentioning some overall history of this team picking in that round.
Hope you're right, I'm worried this will go the way of Jordan Smith.
Jordan Smith 2.0 would be terrible. Could of got future pro bowlers Kris Jenkins or Michael Hall Jr.
@@mattjones1378 Michael Hall Jr., is one of the most overrated players in the draft. He's useless as a pass rusher and he's not good against the run either. Kris Jenkins does nothing in pass rush, but he was one of the best run stuffers in the draft. I consider him an undersized NT. With that said, I truly believe DaVon Hamilton with return to 100%. My dad had a staph infection after a knee surgery and it took him a full year to return to full health. He was weak as a kitten before that. He needed help doing everything. If Hamilton does return to 2022 form, I just don't see the sense in using a very high pick on a backup NT. We needed an outside CB and inside O-Line help.
@jayshupp5971 I think they drafted to minimize injuries by rotating the players
@@papy012001 I understand and I agree, but I just think we had more immediate issues that needed handling.
Pre injury was gonna be a top 10 pick. ruclips.net/video/YYcs5fUpjWo/видео.htmlsi=hbni5_yjx56z1AYx
M. Lewis was 1st round*
hey tony like smith but jefferson is my guy, just think he a longterm guy.
Why? Jefferson wasn't even a starter until the last 6 games of the season. He's useless as a pass rusher and he's not good against the run either. For some reason, Baalke saw his impressive bench press mark and ignored his poor showing in games.
