DIY Thor Mjolnir Hammer

  • Thors hammer, a really cool wood project, great christmas gift, its the corner block off a pallet, and a table leg i pulled from a skip, and a broom handle, then theres the not so simple part of using a laser on it for the engraving but its not that hard, you do have to have a laser unit of course but these are getting cheaper now and theres always the option of a pyrography pen
If you havent got a pallet block then grab an offcut of 4x3 or similar dimension.
Found a hardwood pallet with a decent block that hadnt split and then managed to extract all the nails so it could be cut. The new cordless Evolution was just about on the nail for doing the mitred cuts, had to flip it though to get through them properly as theyre fairly chunky bits of wood. Its a decent saw, accurate out the box and the multi material blades cut clean for quite a while when new. You cut each side at a an angle of 22.5 degrees, be careful how you handle the wood and the cut and your hands are in a good position in case you get a grab

Sand your block off, i found a company nearby who had a load of 110v makita reds for 65 bananas a pop so i grabbed one whilst i could
Used the trim router to run a 45 degree along the 4 edges running long ways, this has now framed the block into the hammer shape.

I used the evil treadle lathe over a couple of days to make a handle out of a table leg, probably about 5 hours, ridiculous, exhausting, itd probably take about 15 minutes on the electric lathe but that would mean ive got to clean all the wood off it. Im sure many of you can relate here
I chopped a bit off a hardwood broom handle to make another handle. I used the powerfile here as well to turn the round into more of a square, the powerfile tool is a very versatile tool. Evo tinyurl.com/47...
Onto the lasering, a whole new ballgame, theyre really simple now, if you can use MSpaint you can use LaserGRBL and get a laser rocking and rolling very quickly. The Aufero1 is a very compact and accurate unit capable of good work. Ive got a video coming on that soon, ive had one about a year now so can review it at last properly. This took hours to laser and align properly because of its odd shape. Consequently some of the engravings arent straight and if youre going in hard and deep youve got limited opportunities for sanding it off and trying again. Thats a me fault on the alignment, the aufero laser engraver is highly recommended as is the support by the company. It is currently at an unbelivable cheap price if you buy direct
    ORTUR Aufero1 tinyurl.com/s9...
Find the center on the bottom of your block and drill a hole that coresponds with the size of your shafts (oooerrr) diameter, a pillar drill is a great tool for this but it is possible using a hand drill and being careful
I kept it simple and just glued the handles in using 2 part epoxy resin, fairly tight they should be solid enough. You could use them as actual mallets and these are solid but theyre a bit too nice to use, or not, a tools a tool, your choice
The tung oil is a nice finish, just glug it on and leave it for 20 minutes, wipe it back, do it tomorrow and the next day. Youre supposed to do the first coat with a mix of white spirit to thin it and allow more to penetrate the wood but I alwasy forget or have run out of the stuff. Do that on the first coat if you remember too
And youre done? Unless you want to keep on going, maybe drill a hole in the handle and put in a strap, or wrap the handle, or attach a bottle opener to it, go nuts, tag me up in what youve made or something, i like seeing other peoples creations and work. Thanks for watching, crack on and make something
No Butters was harmed in the making of this video, hes currently sleeping in a box of eggs using them as pillows

@@thepoultrypeople Imagine you hook a few extra chains and belts onto that bicycle, you could manage to do all your lathe work and routing as you peddle along those rural roadsides - wear the helmet, 'cause your eyes won't always be on the road and "look, ma, no hands" and mind that Mr. Butters is riding along up on your shoulders.

Wow Bongo, you’ve really gone techno compared to the old days. It’s good to see the progress. I’ve regressed, devolved into old school processes and that feels good as well. Glad to see you making things again. We’ll head back to Wales for another hike when this Covid shite is a little safer and after and the airports are emptied of all the revenge travelers. Peace and love from Pennsylvania mate.
