I mounted my BL120 on my awd Tamiya TB-03 vds, cause 4wd drifting doesn’t need turbo at all. I put my XR10 pro G2 and G2s with XD10 on my heavily modified RMX 2.0 and KMW FXX 2.0 separately, except for the 6 second turbo auto cutoff protection and the drive frequency range, I can’t find any difference between this racing ESC and XD10. This trick also works with brushed esc.

You can run a much hotter motor with the 10BL120. The XR10 Stock Spec 80A is rated only for a 13.5T off-road motor (or 10.5T on-road). The 10BL120 is rated for up to a 5.5T off-road. You would have to upgrade to an XR10 Pro to run such a hot motor which costs around $200. So if you run off-road and want a really fast motor vs boost control, etc. then consider the 10BL120. With a 5.5T motor, you may not be too interested in turbo anyway.
Great video troy! I'm just getting back into the hobby from 30 years ago. I have a WL Toys144001 car that came with 2200 mah 25c, brushed 550 motor. I'm preparing for an upgrade my 144001 to brushless. Planning to us a 3650 - 5900kv with the Quicrun 10BL120 ESC for speed. I'm trying to match the best lipo for this setup. Are you able to recommend lipo to work with this setup? Thanks, Ed
Nice video! So which is a good budget ESC with turbo and boost functions that you would recommend...? I tried catching up with the guys at our carpet drift track without turbo and boost and I couldn't...
I 100% promise you that turbo and boost is NOT the reason they were pulling away from you. More wheelspin does not equal more speed. Speed down a straight is all about how you come through the corner. Driving line and how you modulate the throttle is key.
@@RoadsideRC On a straight line is faster to have more grip/less wheel speed...I remember us doing some tests because they were telling me the same, but somehow after I got the turbo settings right, I became as good and could battle anyone... Bad thing is that it's been some time I haven't been there to test this again, though I remember the turbo function is pushing your car on carpet when sideways. I also remember me testing this kinda extensively 🤔
Thank you so much for making this. You helped me to order that combo for my Sakura d5 know I’ll finally be able to get that rear spinning out in a month or so. sadly here in Ireland there’s no rc drift tracks so I just have to drift in public areas I guess. I have another question before I go do you need to have a program card?? For example turning on the brakes
I heard Turbo in boost in from my understanding that means you can basically make this car run on a Turbo in adjust the boost that is absolutely insane . 🤯
i prefer just having fun but i would like to to keep up with the comp guys and the $1000+ builds with my mostly stock rmx and a $80 dynomite tazer combo cus it seems to any them a little
That is exactly why you don't see me build the $800 Yokomo MD chassis! It is much more satisfying to get in their doors with a Sakura D5 or Redcat RDS!
Garage drifter. I bought an Exceed RC driftcar in 2012 which was fun but insane amount of maintenance. I plan on doing it "right" this time and got an MST RMX 2.5 that I just finished building. I was going to couple it with MST brushless and 50A esc but I am considering an 8.5T Quicrun power + esc combo. Is 8.5T appropriate for drift or sbould I stick with 10.5 or 13.5?
I would scale it back to the 10.5T spec. Main reason for that is many of the common rule sets don't allow anything under the 10.5T. The speed difference between the two should not been crazy, and 10.5T is enough to get most folks in trouble.
I have a Trx4 and busted installed a castle creation copperhead 10 esc and pared it with like a $35-$40 motor I found on Amazon, it was working good for like 25 minutes then it suddenly stopped going forward and backwards but the battery was fully charged, I touched the motor and it was scorching hot and it burnt me, dis this happen cuz the motor couldn’t take the voltage of the esc?
I put a 10bl120 in a zd 9105 kit truck along with a rocket v4 10.5 turn. This is my very first build. I have a dozen or so different cars but this is the first I’ve ever built myself. It is FAST!! I mean 😳 fast. It blew away my JLB J3 speed upgraded version with the upgraded motor. With no wheelie bar it will do a back flip set on punch mode level 3. And not even miss a beat. So for general purpose off/on road fun. Wow great combo. I think altogether motor esc servo and kit around 200 bucks. I stole it he receiver off another car so I guess you would have to add 40 bucks for that. But still at 250 this thing will do 60-70mph easily. Just wanted to put my experience out there. Thanks
Hello Jimmy, I just got the zd racing 9102 Kit(buggy). So 10BL120 ESC can handle big tires good? Im yet deciding between quicrun 120A or MAX10 SCT, 40 EUR difference, for bashing dont know if its worth it. All good for you until now?
@@cesarguerra6039 I’d go max10 or I’ve also had good luck with the Dynamite Fuse 130 because it has a great range far more easily. The 10bl120 doesn’t ever seem to hold its programming and that’s a pain in the butt. You get what you pay for and there is a reason it’s one of the cheapest escs on the market. It’s a decent esc but full of bugs. I’ve got it in 3 cars and have a lot of the same issues with all 3. Issues I’m not having with some of the other options like the 10bl150 and the SC8 which is a great esc
If you come back to this type of test you can turn up the turbo on the bl120 to get more wheel speed out of it to kind of match the xr10 but for a new drifter the bl120 had more control so you can maybe get away with taking the bl120 to the track
@@RoadsideRC correct! It fell in water and turned off lol took it home and dried it off and it came back to life !!! Just got some conforming coating to make it waterproof!!!
Ello ello. Interesting. Didn't know this info. Am more a basher or just fun runs on the road. Not into comp, just wanna have fun without the pressure. One question, with the turbo mode U mentioned, if you buy the XR10, can you use it on turbo mode constantly? For bashing or just a play around the area with speed runs along the way

And also, some people say you might be able to upgrade the firmware to a Xerun 2,1 which has the boost and turbo functionality.....Maybe you caould make a video trying to do so....
@GunEngraver Engraving It is a mode that forces zero timing change in the ESC. Referred to as blinky because the esc led blinks to show it is in that mode.
Hey my friend... thanks for this video! I use a toro 120 at the moment. Do you think a XR10 would be better? Second question is about the Gyro POSITION? Front, middle or rear? Does it matter or not? All the best!

Great video bud!! I used to race 2wd off road (on real dirt LOL) so super smooth was key. No tracks in my area now so I have just as much fun with a Rustler, X-Maxx, Kraton, Ultima, RC8B3.2e, Granite, etc just running around and bashing anywhere I can find so the $50 unit would suffice. What's best matched 10.5 turn motor for the cheaper HW ESC?
As always great video! I was going to get 10bl120 esc but I'm going to maybe go with XR10. I already (2) XR10 pro in my drift cars and bought another drift car MST FXX S (the addition is real) Not sure if you have every tried G2 Racing Gyro from or under the name Power Hobby (it's cheap). Going to try it since Futaba GYD450 is on backorder from my distributor. Thanks bro and take care
I don't see any reason to go for the 10bl120. If you want hobbywing the only two that make sense for drifting are the quicrun 10bl60 and the xerun xr10 stock spec. For motors I think cheap motors actually have a nicer feel for drifting because they have less magnetism and less "braking" effect off throttle. I like the rocket supersonic 10.5T. All of the drift specific electronics just feel like priced up rebranded products that don't really benefit the user.
Hello Troy, greetings from Spain. Im buying components for a 1/10 scale buggy DIY. I bought a 4 poles 3660 2600 KV brushless, SL motor. I will use it on 3s. Im missing the ESC and not really sure what parameter apart from Amps( I want a 120A) can I look into in order to decide(resistance, power?). I have two hobbywing in mind: MAX10 SCT and Quicrun 10BL120. The price difference is 40 EUR, Is this really better the MAX10? I want to upgrade it in future with big tires(130mm) both will be ok for bashing fun use? The MAX10 says on specs good for monster truck the othe does not say. thanks!
Here is everything I used in my last drift build. ruclips.net/video/n2OPLfwbv4g/видео.html The motor would match fine with that ESC. Since that video, the only change has been a ReveD servo.

I bought 10bl60 and quicrun 13.5t and the motor runs the wrong direction in my car. The programming card can't reverse motor direction and I've been told you can't switch wires on sensored motors. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Correct, you can not switch motor wires on a sensored motor. In the instructions for the ESC, does it show motor reversing? I thought I had to reverse my BL60, and I could do it. Don't look at the program card, look at the manual.
@@RoadsideRC I couldn't find anything on reversing direction. It says if it goes backwards it's not compatible with your chassis. What if you unplug the sensor wire then reverse wires? Run it as a a sensorless. Do you think that will work. Otherwise, if I can't reverse it, this motor is useless for me and I need a new one anyways. This motor is a brand new Hobbywing G2 sensored 3650 13.5t

Great way to get started! Don't worry about an ESC and motor for it. What it comes with is good. Instead, focus on the gyro, controller, and servo upgrade as a first priority.
Great point - that is certainly where I failed in this video. Both turbo and boost add motor timing. For a drift application, we typically put both in at WOT. This gives a huge boost/spike in wheel speed. It is very useful for the end of a long straightaway, when you need to initiate drift and you would otherwise be out of wheel speed.
Great video. Newbie to 1:10. I’m torn between saving some money but not having the feeling of needing to upgrade. I don’t comp drift but I would like to be ready to. After you got the QR all setup, how did you really feel about the comparison. Should I not waste time and money on the quick. Answers much appreciated. Thanks again.
I still stand by it being more about how serious you want to be. Also, how big of an area you drift in. The only thing you really miss is the turbo and boost. Those features really help you at the end of a long straight.
@@RoadsideRC thanks for the fast reply. Yea I think I’m gonna go with the hw. Comin from 1:24 drift I’ve learned to just get what I need the first time lol.

Its gonna go in a basher i just got a deal on the RTR version and it doesn’t have the temp sensor and he made that clear but looks just like the sct. no box, paperwork etc but seems to be good. sorry. quick run is a esc that hobbywing used to sell as their top esc with blue case. It can have instaled different softwares . You can use also lcd card on quickrun. with updated software on quicrun you can boost timing upt to 60 deg . As far as my knowledge goes quickrun cand be tuned to a much better esc than its advertised- it would handle 5.5 motor in 4wd buggy in a competition use.
Try conectring it to computer with hobbywing software ( using lcd card and all wires from xr10) and try to load a xerun 120A software to it. I used to do that with all similar looking turnigy esc and super low priced blue xerun copies from ebay. It worked. There was just one problem with those copies - quality differs from piece to piece. I have one my Formula 1 car that i use for racing with 17.5t and it was just perfect . Completely no need for anything more expensive as its a blinky class. But second unit dindnt manage to endure a racing weekend of 4wd mod national championchips. In about 3round of heats few transistors just soldered out ;) but it was a combination of 5.5t motor huge jumps and super long 1:8 nitro truck .
Ok i just remember now. You have to downgrade a software in LCD card, and upgrade a software in esc. Hobbywing PC software allows to do that. Then it should work.
I have looked at it - and driven someone else's. I can't see what is in there to justify the price tag. I actually just bought the XR10 Pro - still lighter weight and more powerful than the XD10. I really need to get one and give it a more thorough test to see what the fuss is about.
@@RoadsideRC I was trying to decide on the 2 and I just bought the XD10 because I’m doing the purple theme. If I don’t like it I can alway sell it and get the XR10 pro. But I don’t know if you’ll need the 160/1200a 🤔. I’m pairing with with the Yokomo DX1 type r 10.5t.

Thanks for the tip.
With drifting, rules regulate to 10.5T motor.
again, great video!!! keep it coming mate!!
Thank you!
I have the 10BL120 and I actually kinda like it, I wish it had a boost and turbo setting but oh well. The modified 8.5t I have in it makes up for it.
Makes sense to me!
Thanks, Ed
You just need a small 2S lipo - something that will fit in that buggy.
It doesn't leave a lot of room, so something like this:

Thank you Troy. Your videos inspire me in this hobby. I enjoy watching all of them. Have a great one. 👊😎👍
You helped me to order that combo for my Sakura d5 know I’ll finally be able to get that rear spinning out in a month or so. sadly here in Ireland
there’s no rc drift tracks so I just have to drift in public areas I guess.
I have another question before I go do you need to have a program card?? For example turning on the brakes
With the simpler ESC, you can program it through the set button.
For the XR10, I highly suggest getting the LCD program box.
@@RoadsideRC ok thanks for the information you helped me out so much with the rc hobby
I heard Turbo in boost in from my understanding that means you can basically make this car run on a Turbo in adjust the boost that is absolutely insane . 🤯
Adding both in really adds a bunch of timing and wheel speed. Works great...just have to watch motor temps.
@@RoadsideRC ya
Especially for me, I just slide around my kitchen and garage. I live too far from a track.

i prefer just having fun but i would like to to keep up with the comp guys and the $1000+ builds with my mostly stock rmx and a $80 dynomite tazer combo cus it seems to any them a little
That is exactly why you don't see me build the $800 Yokomo MD chassis!

Sounds like that motor was not designed to work with that ESC.
I highly suggest getting a setup designed specifically for a crawler.
Thanks
Thanks for the info - I will have to check out that ZD kit. Sounds interesting!
@@RoadsideRC make sure you get an extra for spare parts. It’s a little flimsy for the power. Parts are cheap but take forever to ship
We do use the BL120 at the track all of the time. Works great, just doesn't have all of the same features as the XR10.
I use the quicrun for crawling and it works great
It sure does! Just not waterproof if I remember correctly.

One question, with the turbo mode U mentioned, if you buy the XR10, can you use it on turbo mode constantly? For bashing or just a play around the area with speed runs along the way
You can control when and how the turbo and boost activate. They are completely programmable.
@@RoadsideRC okies cool. But would U recommend running it on turbo all the time?

Nice video, it's helpful to me, because only $50 budget
Yes, I do believe folks can drift on a budget!
I know it has been a while since you uploaded this video but what items would you program on this esc?
Drag brake: zero
Boost and turbo: add
Throttle curve: reduce, unless I control it on the transmitter
And also, some people say you might be able to upgrade the firmware to a Xerun 2,1 which has the boost and turbo functionality.....Maybe you caould make a video trying to do so....
I did some trying - and no luck so far.
I need to give it another shot!
Hey sir troy, saya ingin bertanya, apakah menambah timing pada esc hobbywing 10bl120 akan menambah kecepatannya?
Yes!
@@RoadsideRC thank you
hi, i was planning on putting the 10BL120 into my 4wd slash for racing, it has a 3100kv motor, can the ESC handle that motor do you think?
Yep, it should handle it fine.
Do you have to have your ESC in "blinky" mode for your class? Check that.
@@RoadsideRC Hey, this class does not require blinky. Thank you so much for your response!! Great video!
@@RoadsideRC what is blinky mode?
@GunEngraver Engraving It is a mode that forces zero timing change in the ESC. Referred to as blinky because the esc led blinks to show it is in that mode.

For the gyro - place it near the center of the chassis. A stable place, without vibrations.

As always great video! I was going to get 10bl120 esc but I'm going to maybe go with XR10. I already (2) XR10 pro in my drift cars and bought another drift car MST FXX S (the addition is real)
Not sure if you have every tried G2 Racing Gyro from or under the name Power Hobby (it's cheap). Going to try it since Futaba GYD450 is on backorder from my distributor. Thanks bro and take care
The XR10 is hard to beat for sure.
I tried one of the older Powerhobby gyros, haven't tried one of their newer models.
I do agree, I wonder sometimes how the companies justify the high price for the drift-specific escs.
The MAX10 says on specs good for monster truck the othe does not say. thanks!
The Max10 is waterproof, the 10BL120 is not.
The Max10 is also non-sensored, which probably matches your motor.

90A is plenty for a drift car. It is much less about the power, and more about the control.
Which ESC is it? Is it a sensored esc?
sorry. quick run is a esc that hobbywing used to sell as their top esc with blue case.
You are not the first to say that - but when I tried my LCD box on it, it wouldn't connect.
