COLOGNE: Gestapo and Nazi torturing site ((EL-De Haus), Germany

- Cologne (Köln), Germany - the Gestapo Headquarters (EL-De Haus) in Cologne (Köln). Let's visit the city of Cologne (Köln) in Germany and let's tour is the infamous EL-De Haus that was used by the Gestapo for interrogation, torturing and killing of the prisoners, located in Cologne (Köln), Germany.
EL-DE Haus, officially the NS Documentation Center of the City of Cologne, located in Cologne (Köln), is the former headquarters of the Gestapo and now a museum documenting the Third Reich.
The building of EL-DE Haus, was at first the business premises of jeweller Leopold Dahmen, and the building takes its name from his initials. In 1934, the Nazis rented the building of EL-DE Haus from him and turned it into the headquarters of the secret police, the Gestapo. Surprisingly, the building survived the Allied bombing of Cologne during World War II, while 90% of the city was destroyed. After the bombings, the basements of the building, which had been used as prison cells and torture rooms for forced labourers and political enemies, were used to store wartime files and paperwork. Inscriptions made on the walls of the prison cells by inmates can still be viewed today. The building was the site of many executions, as well as deaths due to overcrowding and poor hygienic conditions.

I only recently found this channel, but I am impressed by it. Thank you for sharing so much valuable information and making it accessible to a new generation.
Hi, thank you for viewing my videos and for your wonderful comments!!
I have no words to describe how I felt while watching you go from cell to cell and seeing the names and carvings of all those people😢
I really appreciate this guys channel, he gives such a good lesson of it and is so well spoken it seems like it's a film you'd see in school
Thanks for the tour Vic, as always very informative and interesting.
Hi Tricia, thank you for your wonderful comments!
Thanks for the upload Vic, as always very respectfully done.
My pleasure!
Very informative. Ty Vic for sharing this, as hard as it is to watch. When we sweep history under the rug it disappears.
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!!
Reminds me of the checka (early KGB ) house in riga latvia, that was used for the same
Reasons. Horrible places...
Very similar, yes.. Thank you for your comments!
Darkness at Noon.

+ajs715666 Thank you for viewing my videos!!
Once again another fascinating video Vic.
Thank you!!
I've been there and it was very full on made me realise that this war was like nothing we will ever see again
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
With today’s technology we’ll most likely see it again. Conflict and hatred is inevitable…it’s sadly in our nature.
Your video's are very emotional. Thank you so much for putting so much into them. Just watching them I become emotional I can 'feel' the pain.
Hello, thank you for your thoughtful comments!! 👍👍👍
another very informative interesting video thank you Vic
Glad you enjoyed it!!
I think it's great that these building's were preserved and not left to rot, i think it's important to show the future generations what happened in the past, it's easy to let go of the past when reading about it in school, it's more difficult to forget when your standing there. great video thanks.
+BULLOCK1973 Thank you for viewing my videos and for sharing your thoughts with us...
Thank you very much, Vic. Gruesome yet so interesting. First hand source of Nazi horrors. Great job, as always.
Hi George and thank you for your comments!!

I’ve been to Cologne many times during my time in the army. I didn’t know this place existed.
Very interesting place.. Will be going back in 2021..
Very good video. I love WWII history. Thank you for this video.
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Excellent video. Very informative.
Thanks for watching! 👍👍👍
Very respectful video - educational and extremely moving.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
hey vic very good video and good quality thank you !am planning in the future go to Germany
Sad but fascinating. I am interested in WW2 history. I just returned from Paris France, I see old RUclips videos of French resistance fighters shooting at the Nazis right in front of the notre dame cathedral. I went there and to know that's where these events happened gives one a deep meaningful feeling. I plan on going to Germany next year. I live in Canada. Great video, thanks
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!!
I'm very happy to find your channel sir. I am fascinated by everything WWII, if you make videos for more important places related to the War it would be great

Hello and thank you for viewing my videos!!
Vic Stefanu - World Travels and Adventures.....It was more though of interest to me as I was born not far from Cologne, but so much is unknown to me as I live for years now at the other end of this world..
They call it ..it in fun....Down Under.
BUT THANK YOU ...ONCE MORE..
I was really excited for this video, but it was really painful.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍 Why was it painful for you?
They used to get put in one cell with up to 30 people. They acctually (one of the tour guides told me) had a bucket in the cells they could use. They were allowed to go to the "real" toilet twice a day, once in the evening and once in the morning. They also didn't control the inmates, they just checked for weapons etc, and then put them in the cells. The building was built as a building for buisnesses etc, that's why the staircases are out of igh quality and expensive materials for example. Yet the owner sold it to the gestapo (Geheime Staatspolizei/Secret Statepolice). The guards were originally located where the sanitary stuff was, as you showed in the beginning, but since a lot of inmates got sick the guards moved downstairs. The people were executed by hanging.
The owners of this building decided to strip everything down so the building (where the offices etc used to be) was at it's rawest form again.
BTW: The Gestapo wanted to execute all inmates when the americans arrived here in cologne, gladly didn't manage too.
That's all i had to add
Hi, thank you for this information and for viewing my videos!!
Very Educational This 'should' be in 'history' books.
Hi, thank you for viewing my videos and for your wonderful comments!!
Imaginary stuff already floods history books. Sorry
Your history books are full of lies ! Like the News today and any time !
Wake up !!
‘History?’ I think the nazis and Gestapo are covered more than just about any other topic in ‘history’ books?
Quotation marks on a word usually indicate sarcam.
another fine video from vic
Thank you my friend!!
I've visited that place 3 years ago.. Never forget how small the prison cells were for so many people to stay in. And the square outside with all the mirrors on the walls..
Hello, thank you for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍
What a lesson you have showed in your video. Thank you.
Hello, I am glad you enjoyed the video!! 👍👍👍

Very interesting video!!
+MrDobermann70 Thank you for viewing my videos!!
Thank you for sharing this video with us I learned about the Gestapo in school and from my mom. She would tell us about some of the bombs falling on England and other places. I learned more about it when I came to the USA and met and married a Jewish man I wanted my kids to understand both heritage and what happened to both races. How in Ireland it was The Black and Tans and Germany the Gestapo maybe they were part of the same heritage who knows. Again thanks for sharing
Hello, thank you for your comments and for watching my videos!! 👍👍👍

Love your videos
Thank you!
Very sobering....testament to man’s inhumanity to his fellow man......evil’s never far from the surface,is it?
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Ref: Claudio (P)escarolo From the webreference in my previous comment :"In the Via Mazzini lived the Grossman family, while in a house of the old ghetto, in Via San Francesco da Paola (corner Via Maria Vittoria), there was the shop of Claudio Pescarolo (called Parin), where they were sold delicious salami d ' goose, in addition to religious objects and prayer books. Claudio Pescarolo was arrested on 24 June 1944 and deported to Auschwitz, from where he did not return. After the Liberation, the shop was transformed into a De Andrea-Gambotto butchery and became the company supplying the community."
Hi and thank you for this information!
I'm curious how the inmates were allowed to bring pens like the writings suggest.
People would usually go there because they had been called to an interrogation and most of the times they (the GeStaPo) would just lock them away without even searching for things like pens etc.
they didnt have movies like we do today so no john wich ideas xd i think the gestapo themselves wouldnt mind giving them pens nd papers
And not stab the guard in the neck.
@@monicaschiriac5250 how do you know?
You're very brave soul! May God protect you! Wish you well
Thank you!
Nice video sir. Huge respect from india
So important to hear what they didn't tell us in high school or college.
Thank you!! 👍👍👍
Thank you so much I love history we learn from it and for those that Don't learn about it thay are doomed to repeat it and that is something that we can not and should let happen again goodbye for now your friend Daniel
+Daniel Miller Hi Daniel, thank you for viewing my videos!!
Not a problem love your videos
Fascinating, but extremely sobering..if the walls could talk imagine the inhumanity they could tell you about.
I visited Wewelsburg Castle near to Paderborn a few years ago. Heinrich Himmler used it for SS ceremonial, educational & occult purposes. It has a very good museum, so well worth a visit.
Thank you for let me know about Wewelsburg Castle, I have put it on my list for places to visit!!
Gracias,,,,
Hello, thank you for viewing my videos!!
Actually the inscriptions are the original ones too, that's the reason why you are not able/ allowed to enter the cells because there have been people in the past who tried to write over the original inscriptions
Hi Monica, thank you for this information and for viewing my videos!! 👍👍👍
Another one? When is this going to end? I highly doubt finger nails made markings on cement walls. That could be an old factory!
I do not think so..
thanks
Hello, thank you for viewing my videos!!
So they just let the prisoners rot in their own Feces and filth?
There is a feature in camera called ZOOM...
I did not know that..
The Germans are such endearing people!
You can find this kind of facility in your country’s history I’m sure.
Consider that the writing on the door may have been written in a bodily fluid due to its faded state
Probably..
My grandfather was a Nazi, I'm ashamed to write. My father left Germany after the War and moved to the otherside of the world and changed his name. He hated his father and didn't know why his mother let him back home. He was brutal to my father and his sister. He should have hanged. Thank you for sharing the tortured past of the depressive Nazi regime. There are still those who support Nazism. They are young and did not witness the horrors of the Nazi's. Power hungry death merchants. I'm ashamed of my own lineage.
Bless you
You can be proud to be German, especially how the next German generations dealt with their dark past; which was caused for a big part by the then major colonial powers. Germany evolved into a beautiful nation , with her own beautiful art and music .The general German population was a victim too, caused by the most ruthless effective propaganda in human history. I probably would have howled with the wolves too ,had I been German, since the nazis offered (apart from the xenophobic idiocy) a tempting alternative to that humiliating Versailles dictate. As soon as the allies allowed the nazis to march back into the Rhineland with impressive pomp , the die was cast, and there would be no stopping them..If for example the Rhineland had been returned to a still democratic Germany, the nazis wouldn't have stood a chance.....
As such, it's understandable a lot of Germans thought of Shitler as their saviour...as most had not taken the trouble to spell out his shoddy book; and those that did probably didn't take it seriously.
All these horrors could (and have) happen in *any* nation.....
Ruby Tuesday Shame, usually keeps schtum. Ham fisted way to uncover thy Fathers nakedness. My Grandfather went awol from the Artilliery after a raid on the Japanese and became a Nagga headhunter in Chittagong 1944-1948. I'd be ashamed if none of my lineage were warriors. If Imperial Russia had not invaded Bessarabia in 1880. I'd be a Rabbi these last 7 years now. But it was Popes that moved us first from Sephardi, Morroco & Spain. Real Jews don't blame Germans for what Caesar has done to Your minds, body & spirit. I was reared in Ulsters troubles, were all impressionable, all Human. Shallom. Stop watching T.V. or reading hyped up news. The Southern Death Cult are fieling their latest nemesis propoganda monster. Evil has a new Mask! a new face. It is all around as ever before. From Syria like old El Shadddai or Mythras. Plus cest change plus cest la mem chose. All News stories; Are sensationalist Lies! Since Goebbels propoganda ministry set about mimicry of the BBC. So has the mind melting, thought substitution been applied. Get honest with Yourself. The Power of Suggestion is not a Deutsche invention. Yes again, Shame is not wont for broacasting it. What gives. Are You somehow proud?
Germans must suffer for what? No-one alive today had anything to do with it. TURD.
Excellent points Paul. Propaganda and mass mind manipulation steered the good German people to follow a maniac. Modern German's are wonderful people who have to live with a terrible legacy, but they are slowly overcoming that.
I wonder what the circumstances were when the US Army reached Cologne. Did the Gestapo evacuate all the prisoners?
Was there a mass execution?
Or did they just flee, thinking only of their own safety?
I am not sure what happened at that time..
Apart from fear why do you think people snitched on friends and even their own families?
Maybe for financial rewards??Or, got getting access to (or to use) a specific privilege??
Witnesses about my idol..
Müller was a natural administrator who took solace in a "world of notes, memos, and regulations" and then received and transformed Gestapo reports of denouncements, torture, and secret executions into "administrative fodder." Despite the expense of so much mental energy in carrying out his duties, Müller disliked the scholarly types and once told Walter Schellenberg that "intellectuals should be sent down a coal mine and blown up.
British author and translator Edward Crankshaw described Müller as "the arch-type non-political functionary" who was "in love with personal power and dedicated to the service of authority, the State." General Walter Dornberger, the chief over the rocket research at Peenemünde, (under alleged Gestapo suspicion) was one of the few to ever interview with Müller and characterized him as, "the unobtrusive type of police official who leaves no personal impression on the memory" but added, "... all I could remember was a pair of piercing grey-blue eyes, fixed on me with an unwavering scrutiny. My first impression was one of cold curiosity and extreme reserve." American journalist and war correspondent, William L. Shirer, called Müller a "a dapper-looking fellow" but shortly thereafter described him as "a cold, dispassionate killer".
Himmler's biographer Peter Padfield wrote: "He [Müller] was an archetypal middle rank official: of limited imagination, non-political, non-ideological, his only fanaticism lay in an inner drive to perfection in his profession and in his duty to the state-which in his mind were one ... A smallish man with piercing eyes and thin lips, he was an able organiser, utterly ruthless, a man who lived for his work." Such was his dedication to the job that Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Höss claimed that one could reach Müller "any time of the day or night, even Sundays and public holidays."
Hi, thank you for this information and for viewing my videos!!
Thank You ver much. Please, more and more.
there is also a house of horrors in budapest hungary,
also pretty gruesome to see
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
All these kind of places should be used for the torture of paedophiles.
How long did people stay in there ?
The time would depend on the crime that on one was accused of..
One for the suggestion box - Pick up the pace - This documentary would be
more dynamic if it were ten minutes and had faster commentary and video ..
+PCLA7 Thank you for your suggestions and for viewing my videos...
Respectfully - Watch Vice - You'll immediately see the difference in information and pace Best PC LA 7
+PCLA7 I'm not sure I want a fast pace and a "dynamic" feeling for a memorial to the victims of oppression and tyranny. Thoughtful, respectful and contemplative do just fine, thank you.
+Doug Dobbs - Missing The Point My Dear .
Very informative video and thank you for being unbiased it’s refreshing your a very intellectual man I’d enjoy a face to face conversation with you hope it could happen one day
Hi Scott, thank you for your wonderful comments!!
Respect!!! ......Point Zero in mankind !!!!
Ok, thank you! 👍👍👍
its just like any police station
Wow! Terrible place .i hope the spirits there are happier than in life .😔
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Omg ! Now I know how luck iam🥵🙄
Scary.....should've been blown up...yet for historical reasons it has its purpose. Probably also used for school excursions...
People should know that all this misery was the result of the 1918 Versailles dictate...And the initial support the Nazis got from the 1918 alied conglomerate....
All this misery can happen in *any* country, given the 'right' support....The general German population were victims *_too_*
Ironically have to give this a 'like'.......
Wise words my friend.. thank you for viewing my videos..
*@yoga2man* _____"Germans wanting to dominate others" ?...While the United Kingdom was a world empire with the most exploited colonies ?....The Germans were obviously not without blame, but both world wars were to blame on both sides...It's too easy to damn the entire German population, .....when for example *your* country was defeated after a war and the victors behaved like bloodsuckers, when a populist demagogue like Hitler comes along, with the promise to tear up a dictate and restore the nation's selfworth...with very impressive and tempting fascist imagery, it's very difficult to withstand that. It were the 1918 allies who instead of helping a still democratic Germany to keep these nazis a lunatic fringe phenomenon like they are in every nation, enabled the nazi powergrab .
I fear had I been German in those days, I would've howled with the wolves too....
Maybe you should also blame your own politicians for making a mess of Greece's finances ? It's suspected that the more wealthy part of Greece's population hardly pays any taxes....as usual it's the general population that bears the brunt...Anyway....has Greece for centuries not had more trouble with the Turks ? Germany is the least of your problems.....
That place is nightmarish pure horrors my heart goes out to the inmates,. Unbelievable
Thanks for watching! 👍👍👍
10:28 tge device to desinfect was a can aka a microchip
Ok, thank you! 👍👍👍
I have been to Cologne, but never knew about this place. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around all this, I just don't understand how a supposed Christian country to do all this to a sect of people, not just the Jewish people, people that disagreed with the Nazi ideals. So very sad
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Wondering how the Gestapo armies looks like. I read few articles that they are always wearing in black, tall like 6 ft 3, 6 ft 4 and have palms big as a toilet bowl....
They should make UK prisons more like this for the worst criminals. They would think twice if they had fewer rights than people outside the prison system. Atm, there is little fear of prison as the high level of recidivist activity demonstrates.
So sad !!!!
The world is so full of these “buildings”.
Lefurtovo prison in Russia or Abu Ghraib , and Guantanamo, to name a few. Truly heart breaking.
Somethings never change.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
I'm surprised that they are not Haunted.
Why is the guy whispering at the beginning of the video? Does he think the Gestapo is still there?
I was whispering because there were people around..
I thought it was because the place echoed.
You didn't mention the it wasn't 1 or 2 people per tiny cell, but actually closer to 20. Can u imagine that many people in one cell.?
I thought I had mentioned it, thank you for the reminder.......
well said bo staff I did see something...
+Neelam Athal Thank you for viewing my videos...
Is there any documentary evidence eg; photographs, video, names etc of what you claim happened in this building, other than your saying so?
Yes, there are many photos all over the walls..
It's mosly kosher HEARSAY for shekels eh… Ü
You should visit the Topography of Terror in Berlin, Highly educational.
its bigger than a New York City apartment.
+ajs715666 Thank you for viewing my videos...
Looks like a American Jail Cell today. No difference honestly.
1) original doors;
2) reproduced inscriptions.....
yeah....
Thank you for viewing my videos!
Gestapo (Nazi Germany police) d Stasi (communist est german police) have brought so much death cruelty and pain on German soil
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
Today's modern gestapo is Guantanamo.
Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Müller was a stickler for duty and discipline, and approached the
tasks he was set as if they were military commands. A true workaholic
who never took a vacation, Müller was determined to serve the German
state, irrespective of what political form it took, and believed that it
was everyone's duty, including his own, to obey its dictates without
question.
I love history especially when it's about war love seeing what they look like now
Hello, thank you for viewing my videos!!
I understood that many Nazi buildings and sites have been demolished. Why is this still standing? Historic building? Maybe someday Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) prison for "terrorist" incarceration and torture will also be a tourist and historic place of infamy.
+ryvr mad duck , -- the Colosseum in Rome and some WW2 concentration camps are kept standing for inspection and remembrance (despite the cruelty that took place in them), ...so why not this place??
zubb8 I agree, but I just thought all, and obviously most, Nazi buildings had been demolished. I now do remember that the headquarters of the German air force is still standing and being used. Lots of exceptions I suppose. There should be places to go, to see, to get a hint of what happened.
ryvr madduck , the building in question( called El De Haus) was originally a private owned commercial premises that was then rented out to the Gestapo from 1934..., and now like numerous other once nazi occupied( or nazi built) structures, it serves as a museum.
zubb8 yeah, yeah I looked up the history
+zubb8 Thank you for the information!!
Similar centers of torture of the egyptian opponent politicians are still thriving and in use uptill now in 2021.
Hello, thank you for your comments!! 👍👍👍
sad !
+Rastakhiz Iran Yes, the whole place is sad indeed...
I walked in to that building to go and have a look.
The first thing they had was a banner along the lines of Germany is colorful, not brown.
For me that set the tone and instantly showed how bias the now museum would be.
This made me not want to look in anymore.
+carnetarian You should have gone to the basement where the museum is, I think upstairs (where you went to) is a different part...
It was never a good idea to mess with the Nazis LOL.
Lots of lives lost there.
Yes, very sad place...
Not so long ago
Very true...
All these places should have been destroyed at the end of the war instead of making them monuments they destroyed everything else
Hello, thank you for viewing my videos!!
@Gubba Bump Hello, thank you for your comments!!
Those who don’t know history will repeat it, so it needs to be remembered and taught.
Europe is soon to be Bosnia on a bigger scale‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Gestapo Muller, I love Him so much!Through these
interrogations his piercing eyes could stare through you like a
sharpened knife one prisoner recalled with a shudder. He even practised
hypnotism in the art of gentle persuasion. I have to suggest there is
something of the occult about his appearance.
For a Gestapo man that photo is iconic, captures the menacing spirit of the organization.
welcome to the heal
Thank you for viewing my videos!
