  • Today I'm going back playing Quake Champions that was released back in 2017! I wanted to see how Quake Champions is doing in 2023, if it's a fun game to play and if there's still an active player base. I've always had a respect for games such as Quake, Doom and Unreal Tournament, since many of these old style arena shooters has given inspiration for newer generations of shooters!

    ★ ABOUT THE VIDEO:
Playing Quake Champions that was released in 2017. This free to play arena shooter is fast paced action a la "old school"! Let's see how it feels to play the game in 2023, and if there's still people playing Quake Champions!
Quake Champions is a first-person arena shooter developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main entry in the Quake series, following 2005's Quake 4. The game was first released in early access on August 22, 2017; since August 10, 2018, the game has been free-to-play. The game's full version was released on August 18, 2022.
Quake Champions was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016. The game features a large quantity of playable characters, with each having access to one or more 'passive abilities', and one 'active ability' that must be triggered by a key-press. The game was promised to be a "fast paced arena based shooter". It will not be released on consoles due to hardware limitations.

I agree. Not sure exactly what is needed to make that happen. Guess a new really good arena shooter with good marketing and bigger RUclipsr and streamers playing it, might be a necessary thing to achieve in order to create a hype around the game/genre.

@@40splishsplash tbh I think the game is smaller than we want because the genre is out of style. I honestly love arena shooters over the repetitive and frustrating tactical shooters and battle royales that are so popular, but, those are what most people like for some reason, and arena shooters i think have gotten old for people from their time. I lvoe quake champs but I just don't think most people want to play something like it.

Imo problem is simillar to what i ecountered starting out in tf2 well kinda high skill flooring and nearly unreachable skill cap, not sure tho havent played quake champions much but rn many players are young kids that for some reason preffer to play super casual games with low skill floor and celling, i mean ok net everyone want to spend sereval hours just trying to get used to the game but cmon if game is too casual its boring u just open game shoot people andball u need is no tatic just reaction time and good mouse thats boring no movment tatics etc. . But ye i think this game is small cuz most people rn just play more easy games over ones with complex movement etc

      @iSOBigD Год назад +4

It's sad to say but unfortunately this game and others like it will never get "big". There just isn't a big audience or games that are very hard to get into because the skill discrepancy is so huge between new players and old players. In Quake and UT you can easily go 50-0 against new players, which makes most new players give up before they get any good at the game. Games like Team Fortress 2 popularized games where even new players can score points and get some kills without much skill, so they're more likely to keep playing the game for a long time. That's why something like TF2 is more popular today than when it was released, while every Quake, Unreal and Tribes game starts off somewhat big and quickly dies down. Seeing as most games of any type die off within 1-2 years, it's unlikely that this 90's type of game will stay active online for long, but I'm glad they're still available for those who like them, and that there are lots of single player "boomer shooters" to enjoy.

I started playing this game like in March and it was really hard/steep. Most players already know what they're doing so I always ended up being last. However, I sticked to it and 3 weeks later I started getting 1st places here and there. Within 2 months I was a decent player. However, the skill ceiling of this game is very high and there is always someone better than you. In my case there's a lot of people out there that destroy me but now I put up a fight and challenge all the casuals.

Thanks for sharing your Quake Champions experiences! There is indeed a high skill gap, as I also mention in the video. However, you also describe how it can become quite rewarding when you actually start to become better. That's also why I guess a game like this isn't for everyone, since you got to have quite some patience, and continue to play and practice in order to "climb the ladder" :)

For me the biggest issue with Quake Champions is that you have to return to the lobby after each match. Many times instead of playing another match, I just closed the game because it was boring to wait so much time. In Quake Live/3 you join the server and you can play still for many hours without breaks (the only break is for voting on new map).

I’ve recently picked it up again after quite a long break and I’ll say that I’ve been enjoying it though I miss the classic Q3 Arena style gameplay where the characters where just skins that had no real tangible difference and you all started with a machine gun (and not the basic one you get in this game and actually have to get an upgrade mid game just to do semi decent damage which is pointless when you can just grab a rocket launcher and do way more damage)
Playing it makes me wish for a Q3 Arena remake/remaster with just added character skins and weapon cosmetics and bringing back the classic maps along with new ones based off the newer id software games (like a Wolfenstine inspired one or another taking place in Hell or a Hell invaded earth from Doom Eternal)
That would be pretty cool and I’d like that and probably spend way more on skins n stuff than I do in Quake Champions
Idk sometimes simplicity is better with arena shooters and you don’t have to go reinventing the wheel

Thanks for a well thought out comment! Personally I also enjoy games, especially in this genre, that are as "clean" as possible. It tends to work the best after all. That's also why I enjoyed playing the early Halo games; no abilities, everyone could carry the same guns and had the same possibility to pick up power weapons on the map (rockets, sniper etc). So by saying that, it would be cool to get a Q3 Arena remake or remaster :)

Important to note that the original Quake 3 was going to have classes, including exactly the "light" and "heavy" character class mechanics QC implements. I don't necessarily agree that Quake 3 is any more "Clean". Quake 3 is more simple and elegant, but I think QC is actually very well balanced. Quake 4's slide mechanics were AWESOME, and in fact the multiplayer for Quake 4 was criminally underrated; indeed the game was big in the competitive scene. The fact that QC integrates different movement physics for different characters is an INREDIBLE addition to a FPS competitive game. I play Quake Live all the time, Q3 is my favorite game ever, but QC is fantastic.

An example of some of the worst execution by a studio.
Closed beta was when this game really shined. That being said, they had major issues even at that time.
    * New duel format wasn't liked by pros.
    * You could just spam the lightning gun and shake your mouse to get easy hits. Clawz abused the hell out of this.
    * Rocket launcher client side prediction would have direct rockets explode but the server would not register them.
    * Lack of server side entity smoothing for clients with bad connections
    * No dedicated servers (sucked for pro LAN tournaments)
    * No skill based match making on launch resulting in noobs getting destroyed by mid-skill players, not a good way to cultivate a playerbase.
Now: netcode still sucks ass, no one to play with, I feel for the pros who's mental health is being destroyed playing this game.

      *low champion count
*shit skill based matchmaking system Even before this 200player what playing the game online, the game had really really bad matchmaking.
The game looks like has only one developer that working on it, its a shame. They alredy killed it and shoved under 10feet.
They based the game around the duels, and got a ranked shitfest. But that was just a really bad idea. Arena shooters was more more fun back there, atleast if some player with 2brain cell checking unreal tournament, where the game has around 5mods, in the base game all fun to play+ plus mutators what not causing 'press f' to win. The 2004 game what i still playing even more has.
Its a shame, that this Quake game bornt from this money management.
Thats tells something why they keep pushing the new Dooms. But that franchise MP is still gives massive shitfest like this one, only single players is where shine.
I think they are just incompetent.

It felt like i was watching quake in slow motion. You need to learn how to strafe jump or crouch slide when you are playing Slash. When you learn that, the game becomes much faster and much more fun. The feeling is like you are dancing and shooting at the same time or figure skating and shooting. You won't regret it.

Started with Q3A when it first released - spent *_OVER_* 10,000 hours in it - mostly playing mods of course - like 3-Wave, RA3, and Freeze Tag. Quake Champions *_ROCKS!!!_* and the only changes I would make would be to decentralize the server - let us run our own like before! And open up the SDK so we can mod to our heart's content! The basic framework is pretty awesome though - just the servers and the mod scene is severely lacking.

And with 5 to 8 servers online (2 or 3 popular ones) with a ping of under 60, everyone was happy. With Quake Champions you can play for 2 years straight and only see the same person a few times. It's so sad how this side of gaming has died since 2010. Even valve, once pioneers of this philosophy have completely abandoned or overlooked the necessity to boast the creativity and freedom within their own games' communities. I think it's the main driving factor for why games are so shit these days. The people who play them don't actually have a voice anymore. The fact that somebody even proposed releasing CS2 without community servers, and wasn't dragged out and shot is mind boggling to me.

FPS games in general are hard to balance matchmaking perspective. I don't think any developer managed to create a proper matchmaking algorithm.
And QC suffers even more of this. I tried it out a few years ago, and when you constantly get wafflestomped, its not fun to be the free frag by people who are leagues above you, but due to low playerbase it is what it is.
I think this is why tactical shooters are more favored: even if you're lower skilled, you can still contribute somewhat to the match, and can turn the tide even by baiting the enemy, who would rather shoot players when the objective wins the game, not the kda...
I get it that you can improve if you challenge yourself, but if you're a crippled rabbit on a highway, you wont become the truck if you get flattened in every seconds...
And overall arena shooters just don't have objectives. I mean metaobjective - outside a match. So they are like "filler" games between your main games.

    • @40splishsplash
      @40splishsplash  10 месяцев назад

Thanks for your comment! I understand what you mean, and you have some valid points. A game such as QC could have a better way to introduce new players. Some fps games I've played before had a playlist that you could play up to a certain rank, which was quite good, since it was then made for newbies in the game. I also like that you're talking about metaobjectives, giving players even more incentive to carry on their grind in the game. The downside here, as you point out as well, is that QC has been out for quite some time and has now a small playerbase, so most of the guys that are still around playing, are most of the time pretty good at the game.

I talk in the video about modern gaming, and the fact that genres like battle royale and extraction shooters became big and popular some years ago. That in combination with a newer generation of gamers, that sometimes just want quick and fast rewards when playing a fps game, make them shy away from a genre (arena shooters), where you do need to spend some time playing before actually getting good at it, or at least decent :)

I dunno, Quake Live already exists. I would prefer a console crossplay CLIENT update for Quake 3 or Quake Live, or both. A remaster the way Q1 and Q2 have been done would be good, but it would divide the multiplayer community even more because so far the multiplayers of the remasters have not been compatible.

i love this game but i ended up quitting because of the poor performance, the uncontrollable matchmaking, the fact that i had to "log in" everytime etc....Just really wasn't as smooth as an experience as i would of liked it to be.....Would love to see it recover itself somehow if it can tho.

I played QC quite a lot for a few years, a couple of years ago. I thought I was halfway decent with a few characters, but didn't feel fully in control. Not sure why I stopped, maybe there was another game or something else competing for time, or a QC game update I didn't really fancy, but I simply stopped playing it and haven't got back to it since then. But I remember it as being quite fun and I'm still considering giving it another try again some time.

    • @40splishsplash
      @40splishsplash  Год назад

There's simply no console version out there. The developers stated (at least back in 2017), that the software limitations when it comes to consoles, is (or was) a reason why they decided not go further with a console version of Quake Champions. Which also means that there's no controller support on the PC version.

@@40splishsplash to be fair, I need to check them out in quake, but:
I don't like them in The Finals, Apex, COD (mp & br both). Oh, and CS: GO and CS2 are chess games with fps mechanics, not FPS games at this point 😂
I tried them all with an open mind, but they're not for me.
This song describes the kind of gamer I grew up as, with almost 100% accuracy:
Richter & Shox - Counter Strike Flavor
And there seem to be many people like that.
For example, I never liked snipers in fps games. Campers, quick scopers, all the kinds, LAME & Flamer. Like, use an AK or smth like A MAN 😂
Now, the reason is a bit of a stretch for the sake of the joke, and I am not locked in old school mentality.

You're right to a certain degree, when it comes to modern gamers and that kind of movement in games such as Cod and Fortnite etc. However, I've been playing fps games for twenty plus years, which means that I've come across these kind of shooter before. But it was many years ago since I played a classic style arena shooter (such as Unreal Tournament or/and Quake) , so I haven't had the time to practice movement at all, since I most of the time have a limited amount of time when it comes to recording my videos. But if I'll continue to play some Quake (would like to check out the remastered Quake II game), then I'll most likely start training some again :) Cheers!

One of my absolute favorite games. And it's the brutal hardness that I love, it's totally unforgiving.
I play QC, COD-MW2 and DayZ. They are totally different but fun in there own way.
QC and DayZ (DM and PVP) are the hardest to master, COD is easy to learn when it comes to point and shoot.
QC is insanely fun to play with friends. Well, to think of it...those others are also fun to play with friends.

i grew up on quake, from '96 , qtest into then quake mainly playing ClanArena , a bit of q2 and then a ton of Q3a, the CA mode, a mode that doesn't really seem to work in QC (most likely due to some of the maps/layout and various heroes/health pools)
the whole bunny hopping/movement is such a big part of the game along with the sheer speed of it, something that has really defined it along with the incredible skill involved in duels especially at the high levels in eSports, the sharp learning curve and the 'solo' aspect is perhaps what has made it more difficult to grow and be appreciated since its heyday with the amount of other FPS titles out there, unfortunately if something feels too difficult to enjoy you're quickly drawn to try something else
