I bought this toaster 15 months ago and the right side (2 slots) suddenly stopped working one morning for no reason; about a month later left side started going berserk , lights on the left side started blinking and toast started lifting up and down non stop, I tried to unplug and re-plug but problem persisted. I called Brevillle and the representative told me they don't repair nor exchange ANY of their toasters after warranty, the only thing she said she could do is offer me a 20% rebate on my next Breville purchase (!). You can be sure I will buy from another company next time I'm not happy this toaster cost me a lot of money for the time I used it. VERY deceived! :-(
My Breville toaster have done the same problem. Its a expensive piece of crap. I bought for 2000$ of their product and the only one work from the begening was the juicer because we never use it. The maker handle have problem. The mixer shake more than ever. The bread maker leak at the bottom. The food processor what a piece of sh!t. On the box you can see a pefect slice of pastrami and it cant take care of cheese. Last time I broke the top with a carrot. Please never buy Breville product. They are cheap and just good looking crap.
Sorry about your misadventure. I've moved on since and bought "SMEG" small kitchen appliances, they are stylish (for those who like mid-century style), their products are of excellent quality, multiple colours and EVERY pieces are built sturdy. Besides the saleswoman at The Bay store recommend them to me upfront and told me they are so well worth paying the little extra in any case someone wants their purchase to last for many years. Never been happier. I don't work nor affiliated with the company I'm just testefing my experience.
I have the BTA830XL long slot version and it's doing the same thing. The inner elements barely light up in regular toast mode; however, when you switch to the bagel mode, the inner elements light up bright. Contacted Breville and I'm out of warranty and they want $120 to repair. Well, I don't think so, since I don't believe the toaster will last. Unfortunately, it appears these appliances are designed to fail (MTF). Time to go back to an old 1950's toaster that my grandparent's had and it's still works perfectly.
I found the issue You have to hold down the right toaster and then press one of the buttons on the front. It's a bit ridiculous but that's just the way these toasters are
I have had the same problem with a different model of Breville toasters. I took one back and exchanged it for a new one. The new one has the exact same issue. I think that it is a programming problem: the toaster toasts dark on one side and barely toasted on the other. I have a two slice Breville. When two slices are in--the elements in the center of the toaster barely heat up and the outside elements are nice and bright, however, when I use the bagel setting the opposite occurs. Did anyone resolve their issue with Breville? I have their juicer and am extremely happy with that, but, their toasters seem to have major issues. I've had better performance out of very inexpensive brands....
2nd long format toaster for me and exactly the same problem as Terry Wilkens described. I will look at the "SMEG" brand for alternative. 2 toasters from Breville within the warranty period and the problem re-occurred. Very shame-full company for wasting people's time.
That is how I have remedied the problem, but, REALLY? I paid three or four times as much for a Breville toaster that performs pitifully! Why should I have to turn it around (not over)?

Same problem ! First I have to find a wired u-fork screwdriver !

Same issue with my brand new Breville luxe 2 slot toaster. It looks great but for $$$ it should also do the job. Returning it.
We have the exact same problem with our Breville 4 slice toaster. It has been a great toaster for 5 or 6 years until now.
The elements are strung through the board too tight and it doesn't make them glow correctly is what I found wrong
we have the same issue, has anyone been able to fix this?
I found the issue
You have to hold down the right toaster and then press one of the buttons on the front.

Thanks - this is the same problem I have with a 'cheap' toaster! Lots of Breville Videos - maybe they are paying folks?
Ours just when crazy then blew up. Will just buy cheap toasters from now on. They get the job done just as well and often cook better.
wow OMG MY DAD
HE MADE THIS VIDEO WHEN IWAS IN GRADE 5
You have it on bagel mode!
Obviously not hence the whole point of the video! The toaster may be stuck in bagel mode but it is clearly not selected!
I concur, mine is NOT in bagel mode. There is an inherent problem with Breville toasters!
me too,.. not in bagel mode but behaving that way
turn the toast over
That is how I have remedied the problem, but, REALLY? I paid three or four times as much for a Breville toaster that performs pitifully! Why should I have to turn it around (not over)?
