- How to make Half-Blind Dovetail Drawers
I included a lot of this footage in my Extreme Miter Station build series. But I had a lot of people ask me to make this a stand-alone video. So, I took much of the footage, added some more, and refined it to perfectly give a tutorial on exactly how to cut half-blind dovetails. And also, how to make half-blind dovetail drawers.
And, I have since had dozens of others ask for a video explaining half-blind dovetailing, and instead of making them wade through the videos on the extreme miter station, I made this to help them out too.
In this video, I have used the Porter Cable Dovetail Jig (link below), but almost all dovetail jigs work the same. Although I have found the best accuracy and repeatability in the Porter Cable. (they do not sponsor me). I also own a craftsman, a Rockler, a Leigh, an incra-jig, and a home-made dovetail jig, so, I have had lots of experience with almost every one on the market over the last 30 years.

I purchased the jig 2yrs ago and been apprehensive about using it because it looks complicated, after seeing your video I see how easy it is to setup, this is the best tutorial I’ve seen, also I envy you for having a daughter for shop helper, mine grew up and got married, hopefully I’ll get grandkids to train later

I was never taught to make dove tails and have tried off and on over the years and always failed. I seen the Rockler version and watched the video and was amazed how easy they made it look. I ordered it and started the painful process of learning, couldn't find the video, so watching several others I sorta got it set up but something is not accurate with it due to no mater what adjustment you make it wont cut them evenly. I came across this video, watched it, saved it, purchased a porter-cable dovetail deluxe jig. watched the video again and now making perfect dovetails. Excellent video and training. Thank You.

You my friend are a true teacher ! Loved the video , so detailed and so precise . The book that comes with that jig is not so great . Thank you for your time in making this video . I’ve noticed that on the 1/2 birch it’s never perfect but the 3/4 it’s actually really good . This video actually makes me want to build a bunch of drawers now . Lol

I purchased a PC 4212 for 50 dollars and have since added a mini 4215 template I love this thing it does dovetails so easy.

Great, informative video. Got a ton of drawer boxes to build for my shop cabinets and wanted to step up to half blind dovetails on BB ply, but was worried I couldn't get clean results. Your video convinced me to go this route. Thanks.

James - Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! This is the exact tutorial video I needed just now. I just built two cabinets for a two pedestal electronics workstation. I wanted it to look good as well as be strong and functional so I used walnut veneer plywood and solid walnut for the fronts. I built openings for a total of seven drawers and I was stressing about how I was going to build the drawers. I thought about making dovetail drawers, but I have never used a dovetail jig and I was quite intimidated. However, your video made it look easy. I will use use your links to buy the jig as well as all the other things I need (hopefully they are still active). Next I will look to see if you have a video on making raised panel doors since I need two of them for one of the cabinets. I have three daughters and all of them are now adults and out of the house, but I wish any of them had a fraction of interest in woodworking as your daughters do. They are so cute. Best tips is practice in scrap. These videos are much better than the manual.
My girlfriend kept bugging me about what I wanted for Christmas, I kept saying nothing. Finally, I said “Porter Cable deluxe Dovetail Jig.” And it’s your fault, because of the videos you made using it. So, here I am, about to go give it a try, watching this video for encouragement. I’m going to try it out on some 3/4 inch Baltic Birch, and try to make some speaker cabinets. Keep up the good work.

Great video James. Love the PC Jig as some others commented here, bought the deluxe and have used both 3/8 and 1/2' combs. My question to the community for through dovetails, is why the tails and pins are proud of the surfaces by about 1/32. attempted to changed bit height but the horizontal board ended up with a thin uncut surface - suppose that is ok as it's just a scrap piece. Having watched this video using baltic birch for the boxes, will shift my thinking to use this material than to glue up jointed alder for 12" widths. Good stuff!

excellent video--I have a porter cable 4216 and I'm building a bunch of "systainer" (like festool type) type boxes for tools..but using Japanese tool box style lids...I've had probems with tearout using plywood--but has gone away when I went to ahigher quality Baltic birch...anyway..thanks for taking the time to make this video...

I struggled with this until I realized that the adapter for my Bosch router that mounts the Porter-Cable template follower was not center aligned with the cutter axis. So many pieces to align for precision cutting!

Hi, concerning the tear out on the last tail cut. I'm thinking if a piece of scrap was added as a backer board the tear out would be eliminated. I like the way you labeled the front and sides, it makes straight forward on how to proceed with cutting the dovetails..

this is really a great video,,,i have the dovetail wiz ,,which does a good job on thru dovetails,,,,but not using plywood,,you sold me on this and the half blind dovetails,,my only concern is the bushing for your router,,i hope it fits mine,,

James, great video. I know when through dovetails are used, if you are making a 16x24 drawer, the sides would be 16 and front and back would be 24. What allowances are needed for halfblind dovetails for the sides, as the front and back would remain 24?

Looks good. Looking on Marketplace for a used PC unit. Having always done smaller drawers only and on an Incra jig on the router table with perfect results, I’m concerned that given the final drawer box width has to be exact for side mounted slides, I noticed the pins sticking out slightly proud. Would that not effect the drawer fitting? Or am I missing something here?

My question, what are the consequences of turning the drawer 90 degrees, so the tail boards become the front and back, and the pin boards become the sides? Is the drawer weaker, or is it just aesthetics? Thanks again!!
No problem at all. The glue is 100 times stronger than needed, so you don’t have to rely on the mechanical advantage of the joint.
It might look a touch odd to a furniture builder. Since it’s not the normal way. But it would be a nice way of showing off the tails.
I'm building the station now and needed to brush up for the drawers.
Your videos are really informative. I have stayed away from dovetails until now. After watching this video, I ordered this jig and its on the way. One question I have is on the material you are using. Is it 1/2 or 3/4 Baltic birch plywood? Thanks and keep the good work coming. Ken
Looks like 1/2". I used to use solid 3/4 pine and wide boards warp! The Baltic birch Plywood is the best and most stable.

Have you ever maxed out this jig with a 12inch wide board?, I see a lot of unboxing and reviews of this jig, but no one ever putting a 12inch wide board in it. I know I can't be the only person wondering if this jig can really accommodate a 12inch wide board with good results.
What do you recommend for a dovetail bit? I'm getting some brutal tear out with 1/2" birch plywood using the shitty bit that came with the PC jig. Thanks!
Did you use a solid wood or a regular plywood? I used regular plywood and ending up lots of tear out and burned sw dust, just fyi my porter cable jigs are all brand new including bits? Thanks

Hi Felix. This is a fairly straightforward jig to learn but the problem is that there are a lot of steps. It is a whole lot to memorize. If you can take the video out to your shop on your cell phone, or an ipad, or a laptop, and follow along step by step it will be pretty easy to make perfect dovetails.
After you have made several different drawers or boxes, you will find that you will no longer need to follow step by step and eventually you will just remember it.

After watching this video and the miter saw station build, I noticed a gap in the joint between front and back and the pins or tails were long. Can this be eliminated, or is this common with this jig. I have seen the same result on other You Tube videos of the PC jig. I am looking for a dove tail jig, Leigh D4R pro and the Porter Cable. I bought your plans for the miter saw station and I want good results on my drawers and for future projects with drawers.
