I remember way back, when it was anounced that Heath Ledger gonna play the Joker, many were uncertain for this, they believed this movie would bomb. But in suprise to everyone Heath's Joker became one of the most iconic characters, great lines, and many great moments in the movie were improvised by Heath.

well serving justice by your own hand is pretty illegal on its own, and Batman didn't have big time villains before joker in this movie, so he was basically a vigilante for the city that went around catching crooks and petty criminals while the mafia around Gotham did real crime and Batman couldn't do shit about them, but the Joker single-handedly got rid of the mafia, their money and cleaned the city.

What was so great about this interpretation of the joker is that you can tell this guy used to be something. Military, CIA, Contractor....whatever. He isn't just some random guy who snapped one day. He's got too much knowledge of human nature to just be your average joe. He must have seen/done some wild shit to get to this point.
EXACTLY! That's why I love the Joker so much ESPECIALLY heaths. So when this new Joker came out and his actions are due to mental illness...It makes the Joker relatable and easy to understand. Something I found boring. Whereas with Heaths' Joker I was constantly trying to find hints to his past life before he became what he became.

He expressed a look of dissatisfaction but also sadness the only real human genuine emotion seen in heath ledger’s joker. But in the end when Batman pulls the joker from falling. Batman tells him “these people showed you they are ready to believe in good”
The joker responds “until they’re spirit breaks completely” and tells Batman “you didn’t really think I’d risk losing the battle for gotham’s soul in a fistfight with you? You need an ace in the hole. Mine’s Harvey”
By driving Harvey to become two face the joker achieved his goal of breaking Gotham’s spirit. So his joke was accomplished.......

Can’t compare them. One was only joker for maybe 10 mins. On an acting scale though Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur was just as impressive as Ledger’s Joker.

From Brokeback Mountain to an authentic take on the Joker - it broke the boundaries of "cartoonish portrayals of comic book characters". It was philosophical, akin to Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham; a relationship of doubt, fulfilment, and above all - a chess match between the very best. Kudos, May Heath rest in peace.
@Belle R. When even the people at Oscars boo'd Brokeback Mountain not winning the award, I doubt it was ever a blemish; with Jack Nicholson expressing shock as he read the card. It was a vulnerable portrayal of a real-life issue in society. As Jack Gyllenhaal said, "At the time nobody thought it wan't to be a gay character, now it'll get you an Oscar". Times change, his performance has aged with it - like fine wine.

@@manamejeff8937 I agree. The 2019 movie lacks a lot of character-building, character backstory and build-up to the moments when Arthur finally loses his mind entirely.
I thought the theme of 'the rich/elite VS the poor' was very badly fleshed out, it's not really shown that Gotham's issues stem from the rich necessarily, and many of the things that happened in the movie had nothing to do with society being atomized, it was just about how society is filled with bad people. But even that was poorly shown, IMO, because Arthur isn't a very likable character and doesn't really show that he's trying very hard to connect to people. It's certainly shown that he has fantasies about being able to connect with people, but other than that, what is there?
The theme of the supposed terrible treatment of the mentally ill was also not shown. Nobody in the movie who takes advantage of Arthur is even aware of his mental illness, really, so that theme just didn't work for me.
Even when trying to explain his mental illness to a woman on the bus, he gives her a card that explains his illness in a way that doesn't sound genuine. He himself doesn't really try to form relationships or keep them, and the movie doesn't provide him with a backstory. The first few seconds of the first scene show a tear running over his makeup, but it feels forced because we know nothing about Arthur and he isn't fleshed out as a character. The world around him is also barely fleshed out.
It's not a bad movie, but grades like 8/10 and 9/10... naah.

i recently watched the dark knight triology for the first time and i must say, it was something so good, i’d never imagined it to be.
after that, i discovered it was Nolan who did those movies and then i couldn’t be more not surprised.
these are honestly the best superhero movies ever done. we can praise the mcu all we want, but this, right here, is how you make movies and how you bring characters to life.

The one thing that truly sets my spine absolutely cold, is that you extracted the very essence of Ledgers Joker, and put it to such a concentrated dose, then to truly finish it, you set it to a song that has absolutely no buisness being played in the background and it fits so uncomfortably well that all you can do...is brace for that impact of his performance.
