As you say it's about whatever it means to you. Award shows are obviously given way too much attention in general but they can have personal meaning.

Moonlight was very artisticly shot and told an interesting story that never felt pretensious to me. Birdman was also a fun comeback story for a down n out old man and was also artistic in its own way. The only recent movies that i found more so pandering than actually artistic that pissed me off, was Spotlight. No notable acting, no notable directing or anything fresh and alive - it felt more like a documentary.
