HWM Splitter Wars County Line vs All Wood Log Splitter

- Is it worth it to buy a commercial firewood splitter? We compare the popular Couty Line 25 Ton log splitter with our All Wood Muscle Wood. We break down how long it takes to split a cord of firewood, splitting time required to repay your investment, and how much wood you can split per 10 hours. In this David vs. Goliath comparison Rachel runs the 8 way on the All Wood, and I run the CountyLine as fast as I can splitting each round into 8 pieces. Fifteen rounds turned into 120 pieces of premium firewood! We encountered a slight interruption while filming, you'll never guess what it was. Please keep in mind, we know their are other processes, expenses, etc. that go into recouping your money as well as making money, but the purpose of this video is to help you decide if the substantial investment of a top of the line commercial splitter may be right for you. These log splitters are investments and also hold and sometimes increase in value. We are not even touching on the differences in improved working conditions with log lifts, less handling of the firewood, etc. Just a head to head split off of two machines!
I used a Black Diamond 25 ton splitter from Rural King for three years and wrestled really big rounds when I used it vertically, the cost was $900. After that period of time after hard use it was showing wear and tear and had to replace a valve, welding, etc. I knew it was time to move up to a commercial log splitter and bought a Wolfe Ridge pro28c with auto cycle, magnum package, and electric start for just under $10,000. After one year, and having a large inventory of big rounds saved and using tree service wood, I nearly had it paid off. I'm retired and have the time and energy to work at my pace and enjoyment. As Team Postma stated there are areas of comparison not accounted for, but the commercial splitters definitely keep or increase their value. Ultimately it is your own personal choice. I kept the first splitter for re-splits and making bundle wood. Great video Heath and Rachel!!
Thank you Bill!
Thanks Bill, I thought about using one for re splits etc. but really want an Axis or even an Ultra, finding a deal on a used one is tough though. The commercial splitters are great investments imo if you want to sell wood etc. My buddy Doug more than paid for his Wolfe Ridge Pro28C in his first year as well!
Great video Heath and Rachel
Thanks Kevin!
I don't split anymore to make money. Retired and slower now. I did make money with a job away from home. The wood that I split now comes off my own property and I also live in Texas so I burn less than a couple cords a year. Keep up the sprit. I enjoy the videos
Thanks Jimmy! Enjoy retirement, we all work hard for it. Sounds like you are relaxing and doing what you want to!
Definitely the best way to start a business! I ran a 30 ton for a lot of years!
Many firewood companies were started with these.
Excellent job showing the difference! I agree with you that better machine's speed up production and allow more time for what matters to each person. My problem is affordability. It's really hard to save enough money for a high end commercial splitter in that 5 figure range. It's even harder figuring out how to finance one. Box store splitters are definitely cheaper and way easier to finance if necessary (most can be done at 0%). It's hard to know what is your best option when running a tight budget homestead. Great video looking forward to the three way box store battle!!
Mark-absolutely! I started with a splitting Maul and worked my way up from there. A used husky 35 ton was my first log splitter.
hi there well done ,ax vs county line is like county line vs the multi split all wood . did i see 11 min. thats every wood hounds dream , . i will tell you you did real good on the county line ,
Thanks John but my back is feeling it after a few days of splitting with the box store machines. I plan on bringing an axe into it at some point but we will have to mute my mic so you guys won’t have to listen to me sucking air lol!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors i always need shin guards , john
I’m sure it would be interesting lol. I don’t split a lot by hand anymore.
$450 a cord for firewood ! You can’t get even half that in my area. You can also put a 4 way wedge on the cheap splitter for very little money.
Yeah it is crazy how different markets can be. That’s why we broke it down the way we did so people can apply it to their operation and pricing. I put a 4 way on my old 35 ton Huskee splitter and it didn’t work very well at all because it was too narrow due to the blockers on the return stroke. I ended up putting a taller wedge on it which worked much better allowing me to stack rounds on top of each other.
Thanks for posting this link in the cimments in my Facebook post. For me it is the log lift more than anything that has boosted production in big wood. 1.5 cords of oak with riunss ranging from 12in to 25in diameter. All with a 4-way wedge on my Wolfe Ridge 28C. Now 16in wood and under is an easy cord per hour with the 12-way wedge. Unser perfect conditions I can do 1 cord per hour by myself.
Absolutely! The log lifts are a game changer! These commercial units pay for themselves. Not to mention how much they help preserve the body!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors the log lifts pay for themselves in reduced medical bills!
Awesome video Heath and Rachel. That’s how I started my sideline firewood business 5 years ago using the box store brand for 3 years to purchase a 12-22 . No comparison . Great video once again and cheers Brad. 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦
Thanks Brad! We’re really having fun making these videos😊 Our commercial machines are super impressive and fun to run!
Thanks Brad and I feel this is how a lot of us started. I thought maybe this would help people who are trying to decide if making the jump is worth it. IMO it absolutely is!
That was very informative.!! Very Nice, You Guys are Awesome Keep it Coming!!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Derrick, we do our best!
I’m loving these splitter wars keep them coming. Totally liked the breakdown you guys did over the two splitter’s
Thanks Jay! The breakdown really was an eye opener to me. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks Jay!
This series of videos is going to be very informative for those in the market for a splitter. You two are very creative when coming up with ideas for videos outside the box.
Thanks Doug, we try to keep them entertaining, informative, and educational when we can. I hope to do a lot more of these. Would like to branch off into different equipment as well. We will see where it goes.
Thanks Doug! We just love being able to help people get all the info to make an educated purchase we can. Being able to see these machines run against each other is awesome.
You two read my mind! I have a county line splitter now. It’s a great little splitter but it is slow. I have trouble with bark and debris getting jammed up at the end of the splitter. I have to stop and dig it out because it will not let it make a full stroke. I want an all wood splitter so this was a perfect comparison for me! Thanks!!!
Frank, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! I was constantly digging the debris out in the short time I ran this county line.
I finally got to watch it all. Outstanding production and superb information! I don’t get a third of what you get for your cords - but you saw the 💩 I’ve got to work with, too.
Thanks Mark, yes working that tree service wood definitely slows the production rate down!
Great video. Thanks for doing this. You're exactly right about channels telling you how great this particular commercial splitter is, but it has to make sense for each person. This video actually helps provide some good info. -Brett
Brett, absolutely! What works well for one operation may not for another. Location, access to wood, demand, competition, sales price, etc all come in to play. That’s why we try to share what we can and why the machines are capable of by removing the human element as much as we can as everyone works differently. Then you can apply the information to your situation and make the best choice for you. If you want to see anything else please let us know and we will see what we can do.
That county line has a four way attachment for 125 or so dollars. Would have been way faster but still not as fast. It’s also 16k cheaper and it would take you 12 years or so to make up difference in price.
Please watch the video to the end, we break down how long it takes to recoup your investment for each splitter. It's not that long. I ran a 4 way on my husky and find that the taller wedge works much better.
You guys get good money for your wood we only get about 180 to 200 a cord here in rural Missouri have a great weekend
David, it is crazy the price differences from one area to another. The production of the firewood costs the same but demand is entirely different from place to place.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors Totally agree
Great job showing the difference in splitters!! If you want to sell wood with less time working, a commercial splitter is better. Stay Hydrated and Have a Safe Day
Absolutely David. It can be done hundreds of different ways, one thing I love about firewood. We’re always learning! Thanks and have a good day!
Fabulous break down on the difference guys! Thanks for sharing👍👍
Thanks Jeremiah, we always have fun doing these but man is my back sore lol.
Time is indeed money, but splitter speed is usually the least amount of time involved with splitting wood, so unless you're a running a business and have multiple pieces of other equipment to remove bottlenecks, it really doesn't matter how fast your splitter is (within reason). Time to cut/prep/move/stack takes the majority of time.
Our old splitter took an hour to split a 1/3 of a cord. There is definitely more to it than just the splitter, but it's a big piece of the puzzle in my opinion.
Excellent content
Thanks Billy.
I love this video. I currently use the county line splitter maybe in next couple years I’d like to upgrade to something faster but for now this works for me. I’m eventually gonna need something with a log lift.great video guys. I can’t wait for the battle of the box store splitters. Cousin Jason
Thanks Jason. A ton of wood is put up every year with these box store splitters and for 90% of people it’s all they’ll ever need. If you want to check out my other splitters some time let me know.
Yeah I would love to check out your other splitters. If you ever need any help doing wood let me know.
I sell firewood for a living and love watching your family wood channel keep it up
Thank you Robert, we have a lot of fun and hopefully can help others out with processes and decisions. Appreciate the feedback.
At $450 a cord the numbers are really good but I wouldn’t be able to sell any at that price. In my area it is more like $250. A seasoned cord of wood has the energy equivalent of 145 gallons of #2 fuel oil, current price of heating oil in my area is $4/gallon. That means an equivalent amount of fuel oil is worth $580, if you are burning at the same efficiency which is doubtful. Factor in all the additional work to burn wood and I doubt many people would be willing to pay that much as an Al ternate fuel source. You can get the occasional burner to pay that for special holiday fireplace burn or campers looking for a fire but those burners won’t give you the volume you need for the math to work.
At our house in Connecticut the sides of the roads have wood that has been cut down and just sitting there with few people taking it. As well Facebook and craigslist have adds for free wood all day long. At our house in New Hampshire it is much more scarce.
It’s crazy how different prices are from area to area. The work is the same but the sale prices range wildly. That’s why we put our numbers out. Sometimes I see people say I sold $10,000 of firewood in 2 months etc. we’ll that can be a totally different level of production depending on sale price.
I really enjoy your splitter wars videos . It really shows the speed & labor differences in machines. I believe you will be hard pressed to find something that runs with the allwood or the eastonmade . Nice job ! As always Rachael was running at 110% .
Thanks Dave, they are two impressive machines for sure!
Always at 110% Dave❤
Good job and videos
Thanks Jeffery! Appreciate you watching.
Hi Guys enjoying your videos comparing different splitters, having watched a lot of videos with different splitters my choice would still be the Axis by Eastwood. Depending what you need and time avail as well as money available. All comes in the equation. Any how looking forward to the next one. A great series on splitter wars. Cheers my friends.
Thanks Gerry. I agree on you with the Axis. It was one of my finalists when I was shopping and very well would have been what I went with but then I found the All Wood a few hours from my house and with a shorter lead time when I was shopping. However I’m still on the hunt for an Axis. The Ultra is also a splitter that I wouldn’t mind adding to my collection lol.
Definitely a lot of difference. I am looking at getting my toes into a commercial splitter. I probably do little over 10 cord a year. If I could put up 20 and sell the other ten figuring that I could split twice as much it take couple year to pay one off. I really need a 5 inch ram to split the wood that I get.
Dan, hopefully this video helped. It’s definitely opposite ends of the splitter spectrum but should give you an idea of what something in the middle will do. The increased efficiency is great for making more wood in less time but more importantly saving your body! My back is feeling it from a few days of running these box store units.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I definitely need a log lift. I use my tractor bucket but it be nice to just have a lift or table. I am looking at splitter that about 8500 it fast got log lift. Manual 4 way.
The All Wood table is amazing especially if you have a tractor to load it with.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I probably just make a table out of some saw horses and som grating or plywood.
Definitely helps!
She wins again! great video you two.
Dan, I feel like I drew the short straw on this one. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Great job splitting wood 🪵 Heath
Thanks!
I have a Northstar 37ton. It’s a great splitter, but slow and kills my back not having a log lift! Hopefully I can get a commercial splitter soon! Great video!!!
Gene, our next video will feature a 30 ton Northstar, they are a heavy built machine but I was surprised at the cycle time. I will say my back is feeling it after a few days of running box store splitters. I think it’s the fact that you pick up each round over and over vs pushing it through a multi split wedge that adds to it!
Very good splitter video!!!!
Thank you! I did my best to keep up and feel I ran the ol County line pretty efficiently!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors You did a great job! You also showed that no one can sustain that for an 8 to 10 hour day every day for production. You just run yourself ragged. Also one brand that you haven’t thought of would be a split fire. They’re Canadian company and they have a two way log splitter. They have many different models available also with a long list features and even PTO./ three point splitters that actually work really good. They are definitely not the fastest but it’s another brand out there that work really good. After all, they invented the two way log splitter… and I’m curious of your thoughts.
I have been looking for access to a split fire, just haven’t found one yet. I’m also looking for a super split, and anything else I can get to compare.
That was incredible the explanation was excellent and well constructed, Time is money seconds is minutes minutes is hours, A faster recycling machine will be better,
Thank you, we know some people will miss the point of the video but so far most are picking up the message we are trying to share. We learned through our journey that sometimes the big investments are worth it and sometimes they aren’t. So far with our firewood journey most of the money I’ve spent has been a good investment equaling long term profits and more importantly saving our bodies from some wear and tear.
I had my wife watch this video. Now she understands.
We put this out hoping to be able to help people who are deciding if it’s worth it to make the jump into a commercial machine. So are you guys out splitter shopping today? Lol.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I can't thank you enough for making that video. I'm wanting to expand my little firewood business, but as soon as she saw any kind of price tag, it was a hard "NO!!" I think you guys have opened her eyes... something I definitely could not do so far!!
Glad we could help. I just looked over the stat sheet and see that we didn’t post the splits produced per minute in that video. With easy splitting silver maple I was able to produce 14 split pieces of firewood per minute with the county line. With the same wood Rachel produced 54 splits per minute with the All Wood. Forty more splits produced per minute will add up fast!!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors Yes! And, you could tell in the video that you were "pushing it" with the CL splitter... you were getting confused on which way to push the control lever a few times because you were trying to rush it so much. Nobody could sustain that pace you were at for much longer than you did... so really, you overperformed the CL and what it can do "real world". And the commercial splitter still smoked it.
How did i miss this for 3 days? Dang, I'm late
I thought I had her beat lol.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors 🤣
Nice video.
Thanks Robert.
Maybe someone near you has an Ultra to throw in the mix to compare to the All Wood, 12-22, whatever else can be thought of.
I would assume the two bigger ones with six and eight ways would smoke it over all, but maybe 1:12 to 4way it might stand a chance or better.
Anxious to get mine!😂
I’d love to add an Ultra, actually just talked to someone last night about the possibility of getting one used. We will keep trying to find and compare what we can. I have a Timberwolf lined up and possibly a Wolfe Ridge 35SHO.
Awesome! Thanks for doing this !
You’re welcome Jerry thanks for watching.
From what I've heard, you only need a commercial unit if you're compensating for a different unit🤣🤣
Well I have 2 commercial units so 🤷♂️. 😂
😂
I have the county line 22 ton bout 7-8 years been good machine I just use for my own wood
Michael the County Line splitter’s definitely get the job done! I put up a lot of wood with my old Husky splitter over the years.
Ya I just wanna get that little side table one of these days ,I could build one but for the price I guess just get the already made one for it
Michael, I definitely recommend the side table!
The County Line had its lunch money stolen. Good vid!
Yes, yes it did lol. Thank you for watching and commenting.
hi from france very beautiful video how are you today
Hello and thank you. We’re good, have a great day.
can you please wake me up after he is done split, ing ty 😭😂🤣😁🤪
There was definitely time for a nap in there! lol
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I have a mtd 25 ton 30 year's old I still use it sometimes just for fun everyone has to start some how!.!.👀
Absolutely! I sometimes wish I still had my Husky but had to sell it to get the $ for Old Blue when I bought it.
Thanks for sharing
You’re welcome Dwayne. Thanks for watching.
i love the countyline. just there 4 way wedge is garbage without modifications
I had a 4 way wedge on my husky 35 ton before, the wings were too narrow and the fact that it was not adjustable made it harder to use. The taller wedge works better for me so I can stack rounds.
I have the slip on 4 way on mine and I agree totally as soon as I bought it I cut off the log dislodger and welded another 4 inches onto the wings of the 4 way , works amazing now
LOL Try splitting some Sycamore with those two splitters or some Hickory or apple. I like maple the best.
Nothing stops the All Wood, it’s a beast!
Your premier was too early... Good lord man it's a work day
Rachel told me to do it later, but I was trying to get it done before we ate dinner with my daughter who came home from college! Will try and do better planning next time.
I split with a maul. I decided a long time ago I can put split the box store splitter for 10-15 mins so there's no reason to buy one.
At least you know the math was wrong. All the ads have the math that way. If you buy a chainsaw you have hundreds of $ in maintenance a year. Your splitter is a fraction of that.
Yes, there is much more to the big picture. That’s why we made sure to say that. Everyone’s set up is different. We just wanted to show the best each could be.
Buckin ray faster with his axe them the county line . Should put 6 way spitter wedge on the county line . 😊
Leonard, I think a 6 way would slow it down with all the logs jammed on it. I tried a 4 way on my old Husky 35 ton and it wasn’t worth it.
99% of people will never need (my mama always said need was a strong word) anything but a maul and occasionally a homeowners style splitter.. I ran a business cutting firewood for around 6-7 years and never needed anything more and I sold in my spare time close to 2500 cord of wood during that time. Of course I was much younger in those days...
Nick you are absolutely correct, and I’d venture to guess the box store style splitters produce more firewood every year than commercial splitters. But if you’re making and selling wood IMO the commercial splitters are worth the investment for time saved and the wear and tear on your body.
I have a county line 30 with the 9.5 Kohler on it. Since I am a welder by trade I can make any arrangement of shoes for it but I still prefer a single blade because I split my firewood MUCH smaller than the stuff you show. Smaller wood cures twice as fast, is easier to handle, burns cleaner, etc, I also remove all the bark from most wood species which is where all the worms and bugs and creosote hides. Every splitter I have ever used has ONE major flaw. They all need a good hydraulic oil cooler because they all run red hot which is very dangerous. Splitting in the vertical position is the only way to go, especially for those 30" rounds. Your woman wouldn;t last 30 minutes on wood that six [no disrespect for women helpers]. These things are not toys. I also welded a large foot on mine about 16 x 20 for the big stuff = makes it much easier to keep wood in place. It's what you can do with what you have that counts.
With our table she can split almost effortlessly all day with big rounds. Check those videos out. We also have an Eastonmade Axis to tackle big rounds when needed.
I didn’t have to see the video to know what machine was going to win LOL
Time is money 😂
Thanks Cary, obviously not a question of which one wins but may help people decide what level of splitter best fits their needs as the County Line and the All Wood are on opposite ends of the splitter spectrum.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I didn’t think about it that way you are correct.
Keep up the good work great video
Thanks Cary!
Seems like it would be a rather unfair comparison! Both in cost and performance lol
All I will say is it’s not a clean sweep.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors Interesting! I'll watch it tomorrow. What's the price difference between them?
i like the videos and everything but if your just a home that does 10 cord a yeaar i dont think you need a comercial spliter my opion one other thing i know time is money but it is crazy how fast these splitters are today thats whats going to get poeple hurt
Chris, absolutely! Commercial splitters are overkill for 90% of people. We just wanted to put this out there to help people if they are considering making the jump and deciding if it’s worth it. I know when I went from my 35 ton Husky to Old Blue I was nervous as at that time it was a pretty good sized investment for me and I wasn’t sure it would be worth it. In my case it was. They are getting crazy fast!
When you guys get 450 a cord is that in snap rows or bundles? Around here we are getting about 250
Alex, that’s from our roadside stands or 1/3rd cord deliveries in the local area. We are a bit higher than a lot of others in the area but offer a higher quality wood, and people love the free fire starters!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors when my boys get a little older we’re going to get a stand set up for them to make some money on. U usually just sell bulk and it’s mixed but all split and cleaned. Less work less money. For the boys they could definitely make a good income that way!
Alex, definitely. That’s how we started selling, for the kids to earn some money.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I love seeing that too, sure beats the old video games that kids can’t put down these days!
Does the Country line have a 4 way attacment it would take have the time
I believe they make a slip over wedge for it but it does not hold up very well from what I’ve read. That being said I put a higher quality replacement 4 way on my old Huskee box store splitter and I ended up taking it back off. With the logs stops on these splitter for the return stroke the wings have to be quite narrow and do not work very well! I was much happier with a new taller wedge on it which allowed me to stack smaller pieces on top of each other.
I would like to see the same comparison of the Splitfire 2265. Ask Splitfire to send you one.
I’d love to run a Splitfire!!
You should invite Chris from (In The Wood Yard) over for a War with his Easton made Ultra. I would be interested in watching that. Of course I have no clue how far apart you live but that would be good content. have him bring his Brother Ken
That would be awesome. I’ve met both Chris and Ken. We are quite a ways apart though. I’m not too far from Joe at Joes Premium Firewood videos and he has an Ultra. We did a collaboration video with him early on in our channel. Maybe I’ll see if we can get over there one day.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I have not Hurd of joe I’ll check him out and maybe he will gain a new subscription, keep up the content!
Thank you! Joe has been doing firewood videos for years.
Wow, a rerun 😂
Mark, I never got your email! Hope you’re healing up!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I even responded to the last one you sent, too. I’ll just write another one from scratch. You know what it is, don’t you? Rachael is screening your clientele lol. Apparently, there’s a dress code above and beyond my bibs 😜
Lol, we’ll I got that one you sent and replied. She can’t catch them all lol.
Damnit kids. Don't come in here mummy and daddy are filming.
I know right lol. Kids these days.
I just see you loosing a thumb on that county line
Jon, Rachel said the same thing! I will say after not running that style of splitter for a while I could definitely see myself getting caught with those rear push blocks on the return stroke.
I would disagree with the way you're calculating your numbers. You're not making $15,000 in 10 hours because the profit on each cord of wood is not $450. You have to take the hours of labor per cord of wood times the labor rate and that's the extra profit on each cord. Maybe it's $50 in labor savings per cord but it's not 450 per cord.
I would still be a fan of the commercial splitter if you need a lot of wood but it's not gonna pay for itself in 10 hours. Also depending on the value of the wood. in the Midwest it's 1/2 to 1/3 of that for sale sale price because so many guys have a pick up truck and a splitter and are willing to work for almost no labor pay
You’re absolutely correct. We were just trying to show how long to recoup the value to put it into perspective. You do need more than 10 hours to recoup the investment but it really doesn’t take that long if you have access to wood and the ability to sell it.
That’s a real shocker, not 😂. No comparison as expected.
This comparison wasn't necessarily about which machine would finish first , as we all know which one would win the race. It was more or less to highlight the time savings, and earning potential of a box store vs commercial splitter to help people make a more educated decision for their situations.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors yes I know your reason for the video. And it was so very clearly shown. A big box store splitter is a great choice for a homeowner who does a few cord per year. It is enjoyable to make firewood on a small scale even at a snails pace. But beyond that time is money
Absolutely. I bet Orange Crush can crank it out! Probably paid for itself 10x over already. Plus it adds enjoyment imo.
So you're saying the Goliath is worth it? lol
For us a commercial splitter is definitely worth it! My back agrees after a few days of running the box store machines.
Great job splitting wood 🪵 Rachel
She rocks!
Thank you Kevin!
