Hey, Dewey, I learned to fly in a Champ, back in the early 1960’s, while I was a Line Crewman at a Houston Hobby Airport FBO. I solo’ed, and flew several times around the Houston, Galveston area. The Champ I flew was white with a red strip on the side. It was so much fun to fly. Unfortunately, because Line Crewman, at that time, didn’t make a lot of money, I was unable to continue my flight lessons, after about 20+ hours. And, I was drafted into the US Army a year later. After the Army, I still couldn’t afford to start flying again. In later years, life, family, and career took priority, and didn’t allow me to continue either. Now I’m 79 years old, and too old to start over. Plus health issues now wouldn’t allow me to pass a physical. Things in aviation have sure changed a lot since the early 1960’s. But, I’m still an aviation buff, and really enjoyed your flight. I plan to watch more of them. Thanks, Dewey, for the enjoyment of watching this fun flight, and helping me bring back memories.
You could go for a sport pilot license it's cheaper than a private pilot license and you'll have certain restrictions but you won't be required to have a medical. The biggest issue you'll run into is finding a school that offers a sport pilot license as they need to have an airplane that qualifies as a light sport.
Great flight. I'm the caretaker of my dads Champ. He bought it in 1961, I soloed it in 1971 at age 16 so that tells you how old I am. I think its cool you have a long connection with your Champ. They really become family members.
Own one 7AC Champ for many years, flew it about 1300 hours, me and my partner completely rebuilt it as you did ,my first and most enjoyable airplane and I’ve owned and flew many .
This just about brings a tear to my eye... I haven't logged any time in over 10 years and my favorite plane to fly was the Champ. Man this brings back the memories. I'll return some day. :-)
Flew one many years ago Dewey. I also used to fly my Stearman around Ohio, looking for small grass strips, and landed in quite a few. Don't fly any more, because I'm going on 86 in July. Sure loved my flying when I was active.
Thanks for taking us "Champin" . Brought back so many fond memories. I soloed in a Champ, in Marion, Indiana, in 1960, I was 16 years Young. Blue Skies. Bob
We have a lot in common. I learned to fly in a 1947 Chief with a A-65. Flew skydivers for 6 years. Now flying for Republic as a Captain on the 170, but my favorite flying is in a champ, or a chief, or a Funk. I fly my friends planes when I can. Looking to get my own Champ someday! Keep up the cool vids!
Hey Dewey, I work for the same company that you do. I’m in the Latitude fleet. I owned a Champ for a little over 10 years. I’ve owned lots of planes since then but the Champ remains my all time favorite. Inexpensive to own, easy to get in and out of the hangar by yourself, and just a pleasure to fly. Also it’s a good conversation piece. Everybody and his brother has a Champ story to tell, just like me. 😁 Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching and commenting. My Champ is definitely a of me. It has a history that makes it unique. I will probably keep this plane forever. Everyone does have a champ story for sure. This Summer one of the kids that flies my Champ took up a guy that learned to fly in a champ some 40 plus years ago. It was a emotional time for him. :)
I'm rebuilding a 1964 Champion 7FC but it's being converted to conventional gear and is going to have the Buzz Wagner Lycoming 0-235 STC. It's just kinda working out that way due to the availability of engines in my area. Anyway I'm glad I get to fly backseat with you. Thanks for posting.
Thx for Dewey. I watch the videos several times especially on rainy days. More champ videos anytime. Feel like I’m right in there with and can feel the wheels hitting the ground. I’m blessed enough to own one too N2543E, a 46’ w 0200 and not much more fun to share with someone and flying as it was meant to be Maybe
Hi Dewey, thank you for the video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m working on my instruments rating now on some pretty new C172 but I can’t wait to try and fly in a champ or a j3 some day. There is something about the simplicity of such aircraft with no electrical system, no bells and whistles, flying low and slow that attracts me. Unfortunately here in Colorado these would probably struggle with the DA…
I took our Champ out for a solo flight the same day here in Richmond, IN over to Hagerstown, IN. I decided to take a break from everything to have some fun on the grass! Keep the videos coming!
Great video Dewey. My grandfather and I and another gentleman are restoring a champ at the fayette county airport. I would like to get in touch with you if we ever have any questions concerning the plane.
I really enjoyed the video, I flew over the Dewey Drome in my champ about a week ago. You where on the lawn mower, didnt want to bother you. Great looking place you have there.
I seen you fly over but wasn't sure who it was.It was a good looking Champ for sure. We need to get all the Champs together so i can make a video of them flying around
I love your channel! Hard to find good flying videos of the Champ, seems everyone is addicted to Cubs! I'm rebuilding a 46' 7AC with the C85. Thanks for the encouragement to get this back in the air! Keep posting the videos!
Blue Skies Dewey! Thanks for the Champ ride. Im gonna get out in my buddy’s either today or tomorrow. So much fun! Being from AZ I’ve never gotten to land on grass. How sweet is that. What those birds were meant to do! Love your stuff. Keep it coming. You inspire a lot of us!!!! Thank you!
Great video!! You are living a dream life with the Champ:) My wife and I own a 1946 Ercoupe 415C, and we live in a fly-in community in FL. We have a 6,000 ft grass strip and love it!! Keep the videos coming.
Hello Dewey, Great video. I was cruising the Tube when I found you. In the mid 70's I rebuilt N84723 as a basket case. flew it for 10 years around the Seattle area from Harvey field before giving it up. Big mistake. I believe she is still giving flying pleasure to someone in New Mexico. Looking forward to more video as an Octogenarian.
Dewey that that was a great flight around your patch,it was just as if we were sitting in the cockpit of the fine little Aeronca Champ with you taking in all of that lovely scenery and sights plus your stories of old, that farm strip with the road come runway is interestingk, you are right nothing like flying to get the stress levels down in simple airplanes flying by the seat of your pants, the sideslip demonstration was interesting and quite benign too in the Champ but it works well, what was that blue ultralight parked at the front of the hangar ? looking forward to more simple adventures just like this one they do not have to be complicated to enjoy them, thank you for sharing your aviation life with us.
...LOL that has got to be the fastest preflight ever! Thanks for this! Brings back memories of my first checkout after Super Cub! And one my father owned 12 years. I rode co-pilot but had to give one demo of my landings to prove to him I was "just as good" (his words). One of my instructors was W.W. II USAAC instructor and when he saw my C-I-G-A-R-T-I-P attempt during a recurrency checkride he grabbed it away from me and chewed me a new one. After decades I still don't know what all that was about. Personal-? My Dad was an "IFR" pilot: "I Follow Roads". No radio no electrics just a Mark One eyeball. Never made Blakesburg (in it) but we had fun.
Owner of 7ac for around 35 yrs lucky to live at rural airport step off my porch prop it and go Oshkosh many times and all over ca ore wash was my favorite acft of several after it was vandalized sold to a friend its rotting away in his shop😂😢
Hey Dewey, great to see you flying again. I used to fly the Piet for relaxation. Now I relax having a beer on the back porch with friends after flying the Pitts (can't really say that the Pitts is relaxing - but it IS fun!).
I ride my 2007 Honda 750 Shadow Aero or my 2019 Can Am Ryker 900 to relax. Been riding motorcycles since 1982. I was taking pilot lessons, but put a halt on it due to the virus. I'm going to get back into it, but this time I'm going with a Sport Pilot certificate instead. Love your videos.
What’s up man , randomly came across your channel , not even into planes or anything like that but I like your vibe and flying plane videos are just so soothing for some reason as well as learning new things!
Very cool Dewey love that kind of a video low and slow. You were talking about the Luscom Juan Brown from the Blancolirio channel in Nevada country ca owns a nice one. I like your New Standard.
Thanks. lockdowned in the Philippines and just accidently found this. Reminded me of flying as a kid...same plane, same type neighborhood. Really enjoyed it.
This is great, the close up face shots while talking make it seem like we are right there with you and I love the switching to the outside camera while still audio synced! Great video Dewey!
Hi@@DeweyDavenport Well I have over 1600 hours in the Ultra Cruiser ( which is a ultralight) and have flown it to Oshkosh 3 times. I live in the Kansas City area. It flys so great I decided to build the Hummel H5. I built both airplanes from the plans not from kits. I only have about 60 hours in the H5 but love it so far. Check out Hummel Aviation. Loved watching you fly around in the Champ!!!
I love your videos! I have a 1946 7AC that is stock. I think you might know, you replied to a comment, that I brought it from Charlotte, NC to Sparks, NV. What a trip! I think a 5-gallon wing tank would have made a big difference, but it was fun, and would do it again if I ever have the chance. I have a question. Have you flown the Chief, and if so, how do you feel about it compared to the Champ?
He addressed it in a recent video. He has heart disese in his family, and he had a health scare that made him decide to lead a healthy lifestyle. He eats a plant based diet now, and lost a bunch of weight. He did also have COVID-19, but he had already lost weight before.
Yeah I lost 50 big ones since last June. Then I got Covid in March. I think things are on the up swing now. Gibson, since I changed my eating habits I lowered my Cholesterol to normal levels and being 50 lbs lighter I can get around much easier. On top of that I am planning on slowing down a little and start enjoying the things that I love the most, Which is flying.
It had the auto fuel certificate. I think it belongs to the local EAA. Some one ground looped it and busted a tip and leading edge after it started flying again . its funny cause someone asked me before It ever came whats a good color and I said " Gulf orange?". Ive only 172 and a taylorcraft flights. Yours looks to be smoothe to me.
Stephen, I know you would fit in the Champ. It won't be perfect but you could fly from the front and back seat. Where do you live? If your around me in Ohio then you can come try it out.

I love your video. Lots of good memories.
Brings back good memories of when I learned to fly in a 1946 aeronautical champ. I was 17
Need more Champ videos...LOL Hope to see you around this year.
We also need more Champ and Cub trained pilots 0:15
first plane i got my hands and feet on was a Champ, I was hooked.
Thanks for taking us "Champin" . Brought back so many fond memories. I soloed in a Champ, in Marion, Indiana, in 1960, I was 16 years Young. Blue Skies. Bob
Low and slow and a taildragger.....ah, the good life!👏👏😁👍
Good to see old birds still in the sky. Nothing like plain old stick n rudder.
This is a really nice video showing what the Champ is good for. One of the best. I have over 1,000 hours in one doing about the same thing. Good show.
Lovely plane. I bought a share in a 1955 Jodel with a A65. Performance surprisingly sprightly.
I liked that! Very satisfying vid. Simplistic flying at its best! This city boy is jealous! LOL!

Enjoy all of the champ content! Currently on the hunt for a champ for myself to keep at a private strip a mile from my home.

Thanks so much Apaulo.
Thanks for sharing your story with us. One of the most enjoyable videos ever. You are so blessed.
Loved the video, the champ flies just like its name implies 😁
Another great video Dewey! Any chance you could please send me a copy of your checklist ? I just bought a 1946 Champ with the 65 HP.....TIA !

Hope to see more videos from you in 2021😉. Live the grassroots aviation content👍. Best to you this year!
Thank you for this wonderful video, great narration and views!
Thanks so much for watching.
Used to fly w/ my Pop n the 70's & 80's and often a Champ was rented. I miss both, one sadly more significant than the other.
Love your videos. You are the real deal open honest and educating
Thanks for watching @ronsfarm103. I appreciate your comment.
I love your channel! Hard to find good flying videos of the Champ, seems everyone is addicted to Cubs! I'm rebuilding a 46' 7AC with the C85. Thanks for the encouragement to get this back in the air! Keep posting the videos!

One of the best flying videos I’ve seen! Awesome job and you’ve got a great calm demeanor 👍🏻

Nice video, Dewey. Glad to see you back in the air. Had a great time flying in that Champ last October. Hope to see you on the links soon!
Great!
I enjoyed the flight Dewey, thanks!
Thanks Cameron
Thanks for the ride. Always loved the Champ. I got my tail wheel endorsement in a cousin, Citabria....
Thanks Dennis. I rode in a Citabria back in my early years of flying and that is when I found out that I don't like aerobatics. hahaha
Dewey Davenport I never did any Acro in one.....I had trouble enough telling my feet what to do at KYIP. 😏
Dennis Sumner DSumner I lived on Ford Lake. Everything, including the golf course, was fair game. Just don’t put it down in the water :)
Great Video, thanks! Bought a Champ about a year ago and I am having a blast with it. Definitely using it as a stress relief tool.
Thanks. lockdowned in the Philippines and just accidently found this. Reminded me of flying as a kid...same plane, same type neighborhood. Really enjoyed it.
Did the same thing as you do Dewey, only with my Stearman, when fuel was 35cents a gallon!
This is great, the close up face shots while talking make it seem like we are right there with you and I love the switching to the outside camera while still audio synced! Great video Dewey!
Thanks. It took me hours to get this video synced. I'll be shooting more videos like this
Very good job of explaining the Aeronca Champ. Good video and voice coordination.
I’ll have to check it out when I visit
Very nice simple flying. Of course you make it look easy.
Thanks Rene. I plan on having a few more video's coming out
Good stuff! Love the Champ!!
When you are flying, all your worries remain on the ground.
Oh, so very true!
Hey Dewey, new subscriber. Just bought my first Champ. I’m picking it up in Denver Thursday . Your video is making me drool 🤤
Thanks John. Where will you base your Champ?
Dewey Davenport
KHSD Oklahoma City
I’m a Cfi there
Dewey,
I noticed a very nice fabric cover on your panel. Where did you get that?
I like how you can solo from the front seat
It does make it convenient and it's much easier to fly from the front.
You lucky stiff!!!!!
The champ Isa time machine
I know this video is a few months old, but thanks for taking me with you on this flight.
Thanks for going Jose. I hope to have more someday
Much appreciated.
Please do more champ videos
Single engine flying in its purest form...
That is the same thing I do. I go fly either my Hummel Ultra Cruiser or my Hummel H5
That sounds very relaxing Dennis. How does the Hummers fly?
Hi@@DeweyDavenport Well I have over 1600 hours in the Ultra Cruiser ( which is a ultralight) and have flown it to Oshkosh 3 times. I live in the Kansas City area. It flys so great I decided to build the Hummel H5. I built both airplanes from the plans not from kits. I only have about 60 hours in the H5 but love it so far. Check out Hummel Aviation. Loved watching you fly around in the Champ!!!
My Dad had an air knocker, 3608E and I had one 1452E. See yours has dorsal fin.
Any concentrated animal farming operations that you can see or film from above??

Where did you get that sweet glare shield for the champ?
Just discovered your channel. Nice Sub'd.
Thanks for finding me and subscribing to the channel.
@@DeweyDavenport Hey glad to do it. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

bike riding is relaxing. I enjoy golfing also
How much does that plane cost to purchase?
I helped rebuild a 47' orangeone.

Here working on my tailwheel endorsement so when I get my Champ done I will be ready to go. Just kidding, Kinda
How do you start that bird without it taking off on you
I'm looking at an Aeronca K myself (scout I believe?) Can anyone give me a bit more info or is it very similar to the champ?
I walk my dogs to relax.
6'4 pilot, think I would fit a Champ?
Stephen, I know you would fit in the Champ. It won't be perfect but you could fly from the front and back seat. Where do you live? If your around me in Ohio then you can come try it out.
@@DeweyDavenport I'm over in Lancaster, PA. Sadly not tail wheel rated yet. Looking to come out that way to visit the museum in Dayton.
