  • The highlight of the trip was the ride on this 1976 Flxible New Look #621, formerly of the Peninsula Transportation District Commission (PENTRAN) through Roanoke, Virginia. This bus served the city of Roanoke for 23 before being saved and donated to the Commonwealth Coach & Trolley Museum.
Powered by the mighty Detroit Diesel 8V71 engine, this bus run like it did during those 20+ years in service.
    Powertrain: Detroit Diesel 8v71
    Transmission: Allison VS3 Overdrive

I remember when these were introduced in 1976. They looked so futuristic.

They actually had these in Puerto Rico starting in 1968. They also had the 70 model and the 72 all with the 6v engine. The authority moved up to the RTS model in 1980 and these became the alternative when the non rush hour routes ran out there. I miss those days and seeing how little they changed thru the years makes them remarkable vehicles.

Here's the actual history of the bus. It ran at Pentran through the early 1990s, then it served Blacksburg Transit until around 1999, when it was donated to CC&T, which is here in Roanoke. It never ran here before becoming a museum bus. However, we did have 35-foot Flxible New Looks from the same year with 6V71s.

This bus was destroyed by fire, along with 12 or more buses at a storage facility in Virginia in November 2017....

Pentran was Hampton and Newport News. Do you mean they gave it to Roanoke, or is the museum in Roanoke?

+Lennox Alexander Francis Jr That's what was so long used unless suburban four speed stick shifts were used.:) But 3-speed automatics came in 1976.
