How to Tie the Square Knot

- A step by step guide to tying the Square Knot ( AKA: Reef Knot, Hercules Knot, Common Knot, Flat Knot, Hard Knot, Regular Knot, String Tie Knot or True Knot).
The Square Knot, is an ancient and simple binding knot used to weakly connect two ropes of equal diameter and material to each other. Although the Square Knot is often used in this matter, it is also integral as a component of many lashings and more intricate knots as well as a binding around objects.
The Square Knot is formed by tying two alternating Over-Hand Knots . The common phrase used in remembering this knot is "right over left; left over right", and is sometimes followed by "... makes a knot both tidy and tight".

This is the knot needed for wire recording splicing. Thanks for the calm explanation.
After all these years, I finally understand how to tie a square knot. Many thanks.
Thank you! I have a scout and this kept it simple and easy for her to learn!
Exactly what I needed you made this look so simple. The other video's I tried made it difficult. Thanks for the simple steps. This will help me greatly!
Same happened to me. Tried another video but ended up doing wrong. Your video clarified for me.
Thanx.
I did knot know this, now I do, thanks.
I'll see my way out
Pun city
excellent demonstration. none of that confusing talk about trees and rabbit holes.
That's how they tried to explain it to us back in the early 80's.
Shut ....
Up
that's because you're thinking of a bowline, not a reef knot, which is not confusing at all
love you so much...
first time i knew the difference between 👵s knot and 🔲 knot.

i've been trying to learn this from a book for 10 minutes, watched 20 seconds of the video and got it immediately, lol great vid
bit thick eh?
Thanks! They recommended tying my kids lacrosse neck guard with a square knot. Simple and easy to follow instructions
Very easy to follow. Thank you!
Deeply impressed with this video. Spent £7.50 ( $10.40) on The Knot Skills Kit which sent two different coloured ropes ( good quality) and instructions card- (utterly useless). Thank you for using two different coloured ropes, the uses of the knot, the benefits and the limitations of the knot, appropriate situations where it can be used and situations where it should not be used. High quality educational video. Subscribed after this first video.
Huge thanks. I've always used the granny knot and wondered why it wasn't secure when tying weights around my hips.
This video is so helpful. Thanks
Admittedly knots are a weakness, always have been, possibly tied to dyslexia, who knows? Luckily we didn't tie too many knots when I was stationed on submarines back in the Cold War. So, taking this down time to challenge my weakness. Appreciate your strength, skills, and the vid!
You made something complicated so easy that it's unbelievable. Thank you for doing that !
It's not all that complicated
This video is very helpful! 👍
I totally recommend this to beginners, sending hearts ❤️
Did... Matthew Mcconaughey just teach me how to tie a square knot?
alright...
Alright

Alright! Alright! Alright! Thank you for helping me tie my dress!!
thank you!! this was very helpful!
This was so helpful, thank you so very much.
Nice video. this helped me make my video on how to tie a square knot.
Thank you for the right over left and left over right. Makes this knot easy to remember
I'd say it's more confusing, but maybe that's the way Americans are being taught. I've been using this knot for 60 years and I learnt how to tie it by remembering that the part you first put over the other one also goes over again.
Thank you so much for this slow video. My grandson is in wolf Cub scouts and he is just learning knots. The videos that they have go way too fast and just looking at the book totally confuses the both of us. Thank you so much for making this slow video tutorial. we also learned about the thief's knot. because I was just trying to get him to make the knot look this way, I probably was accidentally making the thief's not which would not have gotten him a good score with his cub master.
Useful tip. Thank you.
That was a really good video of how to tie a square knot
Hahaha "you're gonna get hurt" made me chuckle
Okay and?
This helped a lot, thanks!

Thanks! I urgently needed this to tie my ballet shoes!!!
Nice, pretty simple
Thank you!
Always wondered what a reef knot was good for it was big in the scouts when I was a kid and I had no idea why.
I watched. I learned. I thank you.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME
Thank you, sir!
I learned this knot as a Girl Scout. I now use it in my yarn craft. I tug on the ends until the knot becomes small. I then weave the ends into the garment/project.
Love this knot for joining yarn together. I snip the ends very close and it blends in very well. I haven’t had one come apart ever! Thank you!
Good video thanks

Doing a square knot for my wife. She tells me she needs it for her to change the thread colors without rethreading the the compicated threading pattern on her industrial sewing machine. THANK YOU!

Great work!
You can also tie it using a larks head
Thank you
This helped me for my Girl Scout.
Excellent.
What does it mean by make sure the 2 terminal ends are on 1 side of the knot, or you may have made a thief knot. I'm watching the video on thief knots side by side with this one and i can't see any difference at all between the finished knots, even in the spot of the thief knot video where he's explaining the same thing about making sure it's not a square knot.
I don't know if Bob says it in the video, I don't have time to watch it. But I always remember how to tie a square not by committing to memory to always cross the lines left over right then right over left.
I meant square knot, not not.
I did it and it pulled right apart. I was using fishing nylon. Wasn’t very useful for uniting two pieces together.
Use double sheet bend.
There are many knots specifically designed for fishing. Monofilament is much different from a rope so you use different knots.
Not only, be careful about using the square know, but always have an axe nearby to get it apart if it has had any tension on it.
what music
What knot do you recommend for life saving event? to tie two different ropes together
The bowline
silly me trying to tie a square knot w/ one line of rope. thanks for the reminder😂
So which knot (tying two ropes) is the best for heavy duty usage?
Double sheet bend.
@@BobHansler Ok, thanks. :)
THIS IS FRICKING HARD
it worked
Woah this helped me tie a square knot while wearing a shemagh
hey I love ur vids.
Can a fisherman's double be considered way superior,in this regard?

Bob are you leixe hansler sister
Thos knot is called square, straight, good(yes it's one of the names), and many others
why is it age resticted
Right over left
Left over right ....wow
Ayo
*2015 damn*
Honestly it does seem strong enough for heavy loads but I'm no expert
Why can’t it be used for life saving? The is completely secure.
I had to learn these for boy scouts .-.
That is where I learned as well. I am an Eagle.
same reason why I watched this video
I just got in the scouts last week, this helps a lot, thanks for that.
The reef knot is made of 4 half hitches 2 clockwise and 2 anticlockwise it is a binding knot which should only be used in the same bit of rope and should not be used as a bend to tie 2 ropes together as it is unsafe for that use
Scouts honor
Why is this age restricted bruh
Isn't it reef knot?
It has many names
Ikr
Same question
This knot should only be tied in the two ends of the same rope it should never be tied in two different ropes
unless you need them to come off easily, this is what magicians use to tie their silks
i accidentally made a square knot on my niece's leg and immedientally went to the hospital when i was 4
itz not working
My headphones can make more knots
