As a Scoutmaster, I pride myself in knowing quite a few knots with the bowline of course being one of them. I've NEVER seen it done this way. GREAT JOB. I'll be adding that to my repertoire. Thanks!

As a sailor I thought I’d learned a couple of the best ways to tie a bowline when you to attach a sheet to a sail but I hadn’t tried this one yet. It’s simple straightforward and easy to do even with a wet sheet in your hand. Thank you. (And for that guy who said you’d never need to tie a bowline this way- well obviously he was never in the sea scouts)

Finally, a video of the bowline knot method I learned from a rigger at a trade show 25 years ago. I've been trying to teach it to my fellow sailors ever since. By far the best method ever. I try to tell others it is just a slip knot with a twist. Just like the one used for a basic truckers hitch. Thanks

If you're having trouble remembering knots, just get a 4 foot length of 550 paracord and keep it in your pocket. I take mine with me and just keep practicing knots over and over until I can't forget them. It's great for sitting on the couch and watching TV too. Seriously. You can spend a lifetime studying knots and their use, strengths and weaknesses. You don't really "know" a knot until you can recall it by name, identify it by sight and choose it from a wide selection of other knots for it's beneficial applications.

I've started doing this when I watch tv or lie listening to podcasts etc to get in the muscle memory. I'm a sailor, and the bowline is one of those knots that can really save a life if done correctly, quick and under all possible conditions (i.e. in pitch dark, under water, while being thrown around by waves etc). It's uses are endless, from securing a preventer, sheets, halyards, man over board situations, securing to a dock or other fast objects. It can take an amazing load, and I've still never have one unravel or fail. There are several ways to tie it (i love the one in this video), both with one and two hands, depending on situation. I'd recommend to learn them all, escpecially onehanded. Great for securing stuff on deck when you have to hold fast to the boat with the other, or to tie around yourself it you're in the water and someone throughs you a line. Pro tip: Do practice blindfolded or in the dark :)

I just always carry a tightly packed 5 m (16.4 ft) bunch of 3 mm accessory cord, that stuff is very strong and I don't use it just for knot-practicing. In fact, it has proven to be extremely handy to just have such a relatively long and strong piece of string around. I additionally carry a small non-locking (quickdraw) carabiner on a belt loop, giving me even more options. Hang your grocery bag from your backpack, fix a door open, hang your bag somewhere, measure the height of something, tie some cargo to your vehicle (mostly my bike), you name it. ;)

@@ash-ip2gc it’s better to know the right way cause if you have a habit of tying it cowboy style with bitter end on the outside, when you tie a sheet bend that way it won’t hold and can slip. I learned that from an experienced sailor

There are a host of videos out there about tying this knot. But you went right to the application of the knot, so that by the time you've shown how to tie it, the viewer already knows how to attach to something. Brilliant. After a few practice knots, it all makes sense and will be something I'll use forever on my boat and in a host of other situations. THANKS for a very practical and instructive video. I also really appreciate how concise it was - no fanfare, just the right practical steps. Well done!

Absolutely the best, easiest way to tie the Bowline, period! Ever seen someone who could tie a 'perfect bowline', and when you give them something to tie it TO, the loop is 10-sizes too large? This method lets you size your hitch loop to PERFECTLY fit the eyelet, load, etc. you want to connect with! If you aren't using this method, you don't have true control of your loop size...
