It's impressive that Hikaru not only played the tournament but gave a top level recap of each day whilst doing so. I'm not sure I'd have the energy nor will to do so after hours of chess, let alone the time between preparing for the next round. In any case I'm incredibly grateful that we have the man himself able to distil this level of play down to something us mere mortals can understand. My only disappointment is not hearing Hikaru refer to himself in the third person from time to time. "Hikaru then played this brilliant idea" brings me great joy for some reason. But regardless, a deep genuine thank you for this service.
I wish Hikaru would change the format of his tournament coverage. I’m trying to follow more of these tournaments as a chess outsider and I’d like to know what’s happening at them. Maybe spend a few minutes at the start covering the top players, who won, the most compelling matches, and the rankings following each day. Then get into the breakdowns of the chess games. I’d just like that overview at the start to listen to because I’m not always in a position to watch what’s happening on the screen and I’m not advanced enough to follow the moves in my head.
There’s 160 people in this tourney and he’s spending a good 5 hours a day playing in it himself, the fact that he has time to even recap his own games is astounding to me
The only way that would be possible is if he has a team doing the recaps. Not really realistic imo. I recomend channels like agadmator or gothamchess as complementary analysis. Or… just analyze yourself :)
At the end of every video, he mentions where him and Magnus stand regards to points and how far from #1. If you want a more around coverage, go to Gotham's channel, as Hikaru doesn't have a lot of time to cover so many games, as he's playing 4 hour games everyday in the tournament.
I love the "Magnus finishes middle of the pack" when he only finished half a point behind Hikaru LOL He still finished top 16 with +3, just below average for him but still solid lol
lol dude anybody with social skills (ie like 5% max of the viewers here lmao) will see that interaction as an obvious example of what an "id like to speak to your manager" level douchebag he is. im 100% sure i wouldve said "oh, not right now, thank you" and smiled at them, not just brusquely said "no" and made a dismissive hand gesture and then made a comment about how they "interrupted" my stream while smirking as if to suggest they did it out of foolish pitiable incompetence when they were literally just doing their job and unsurprisingly took longer than 0.01 seconds to realize what was happening in the room they literally just walked into an instant beforehand. its really not a big deal, people arent just a binary of good or bad and i dont think hikaru is a "bad person". in fact i think in a lot of situations that are more abstracted he actually tends to have good instincts and intentions... but in real time interactions he undeniably has a penchant for being an arrogant presumptuous douche bag. anyways it doesnt really matter but i literally came to the comments to see if anyone else had remarked on how unnecessarily rude he was to that guy, and the first comment i see about it is you praising him for it 😅. kinda think you mightve been being sarcastic but its really hard to say
it is still absurd to me that in a 9 round tournament where Hikaru doesnt lose a single time, drew 5 times and won 4 times he still loses -2 elo in the process, crazy

buddy the whole point of saying that something is "CONSIDERED" to be the best move instead of just flat out saying "its the best move" is literally precisely to acknowledge exactly what youre saying, that it may not ACTUALLY be the best move. if someone really thought a move was hands down objectively the "best move" like youre suggesting, like unquestionably, why would they bother saying "considered"? 🤔😮💨
These long open tournaments are brutal for established GMs. I think age also really plays a factor. Most older GMs are not playing at the top of their game at the end-- so the younger GMs are the ones that filtered to the top and eventually won. Congrats to both Nodirbecks. Uzbek killed this tournament.
Does rating change depending if you are playing white or black or just based on each player's rating? Always thought it's second option. Only now had the idea to question it. I feel like playing with black should result in a lower penalty or a slightly bigger gain when winning.
statistically youre going to play both sides a virtually equal number of times over a large enough set of games, so it doesnt really matter. the extra points you didnt get for winning with black will even out with the extra points you didnt lose for losing with white, and since everyone is under these same conditions, the overall resulting ratings should be about as fair as they can get. doing what youre suggesting would be difficult because it would require determining *precisely* what whites advantage is on a numerical level, and it would be an example of fixing something that isnt broken and potentially making it worse. like its clear white has the advantage yes, but its not clear *exactly* what that advantage is, and indeed its likely actually different at different ELOs. even among just the top rated players, the value as i understand it would have fluctuated as opening theory has advanced over the decades because games have increasingly tended towards draws. also, changing the way rating is calculated would change the stakes in a way that would affect peoples play. if it were changed white would likely tend to be extra defensive by comparison in order to not incur the extra penalty, which is then going to potentially lead to different win/loss ratios which would then require a further rejiggering of the penalty value of being white.
Why do I feel like everytime Hikaru plays the queens Indian it seems like he struggles? It happened in Norway too, he seems like he gets these really uncomfortable positions to defend. I know he’s a master kind of defense but good lord Id be cooked
