Also visit the graves of baseball great Satchel Paige, Civil War General Jo Shelby, Gov. Thomas Crittenden who sought the capture of Jesse & Frank James, and Joyce Hall who founded Hallmark cards.

Mays said he called Paige, Sir. He was star struck with the pitcher and his first at bat against him was memorable. Paige told Mays he would deliver 3 fast balls. During the third and last pitch Paige said aloud, Take a seat! Mays struck out. The beginning of a great friendship. Thanks, Jeff!

Always! I finally had lunch that day close to 2:30 pm before heading to my two other locations (Truman farm house and the Mt. Moriah Cemetery stops). Hopefully you got to see those videos too!
Thanks for your efforts in putting this together. Pretty much as good as being there without the sweat. It was fun seeing Buck O’Neill at 18th and vine at the Blue Room hanging out enjoying jazz.
I took a trip to Tennessee in 2020, the humidity was brutal. You have my respect out there in that heat, and humidity. Very interesting cemetery, lots of history there. No matter opinion or side of the Civil War, it is part of history that we can't change or erase. People who take down statues will be the cause of repeating history. My husband was born and raised in Missouri. I'm a life long Washingtonian. We lived in K.C. Mo for the first year of our marriage. You are so right. The heat and humidity in K.C. can be brutal. Our 2nd year of marriage, we moved back to Seattle. Mountains & ocean. Thanks again for a well researched episode. ❤️ My husband even learned some Missouri facts that he didn't know.

I am a native Georgian & although I have lived here my entire life(67), the heat & humidity still gets to me. I asked my parents what they did when it got so hot & they said, stay in the shade & wear your arms out waving funeral home fans. They were raised on farms where they picked cotton & grew all kinds of vegetables, along with pigs, chickens & cows. They did not have it easy either. No inside plumbing, no central heating or electricity. They heated the house with a fireplace & cooked on a wood stove. So I feel for you in the heat. Stay hydrated.
I moved to Arizona. It’s hot, but without the humidity it makes it bearable.
Thanks for another great video. As a native Californinan (Carlsbad), living in Connecticut 16 years now, you never get used to the oppressive humidity of the summer months.

Another terrific program. Thank you for your work. I love history so I watch your channel often as you know. I wouldn't spend too much time showing disagreement with the Confederate graves. I in no way agree with Socialist Democrat Slavery or Segregation. These folks were American's who had different values and ideas than the rest of us. Some families were split in two. Friendships ended. It was bad. We got through it and we learned from it. As American's they have to be buried somewhere. Also as American's it shows we have a lot of pride and backbone. Buck O'Neil and Satchel Paige, Mr Hall, The Truman family and a Supreme Court Justice are in the same place as Confederate Soldiers. They all have their own place there and their own story. No other country in the world would have a resting place like this. We should be proud. I know I am. I mean, look up Socialist Democrat former President Woodrow Wilson. We have a bridge named after him. There is an area in Virginia off of I81 for him. He is buried in the Washington Cathedral. He was a segregationist. Former US Senator Socialist Democrat Robert Byrd who was a member of the KKK and best friends with the 46th and current President of the United States. Matter of fact, Joe Biden spoke at Byrd's funeral and said Byrd was a great man. A KKK member a great man? That's what Socialist Democrat Biden said. Byrd is buries in Arlington, Virginia at Columbia Gardens Cemetery. There are some notable people there if you look it up. All buried in the same place as a member of the KKK. And down the street from one of the most sacred places in America. Arlington National Cemetery.
I live in the Illinois suburbs of St. Louis and I agree that the heat and humidity can be brutal in the Midwest and South.
I sometimes wish that the air was drier here like how it is in the West, but the tradeoff is that the humidity and resulting rain here in the Midwest and South gives us a lush green landscape.
I prefer that over the largely brown, unvegetated, and unwooded areas common in the desert areas of the West.
My favorite time of the year weatherwise in this part of the country is the last half of September and the first half of October as the weather tends to be brisk to warm with lower humidity and plenty of sunshine.
October also coincides with peak fall color season.

I do have Fanny Crosby, RobertLowry, Philip Bliss, George Root, Frederick Weatherly and other lesser knowns that were still giants to me. It’s great you have Billy Graham’s and Spurgeon’s. Wonderful and very grateful for the gems from the past God gives us.
When I lived in California, I would chuckle when my Midwestern relatives complained about 80 degree heat. That's before I moved to the Great Plains and found out what it feels like with humidity. Great job, as always!

You have inspired me to get out and find the history all around us. I found a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient in a cemetery 5 minutes from me. I had no idea he was there. It’s crazy how much history is just forgotten.

You bring back thoughts of my own family history. Jesse James: My great grandma's family apparently had their land taken from them by the government in order to "flush" Jesse out. Secondly, my husband's family is related to former governor Burns from Hawaii. His grave marker is small as well. He wanted no special treatment or fanfare. A man of the people. A great career though being a point to bring Hawaii into statehood. This would be a great HH episode if you get to Oahu. It was also suggested that he was part of the inspiration for McGarrett on Hawaii 5-0. I look forward to learning more about all of our family history. Thank you for your passion and education! My dad was a high school history teacher with a great knowledge and passion too! Guess that is where I get it!

Hio jeff, YES i enjoyed your diverse history taking us through the cemetary.... and sorry you had to sweat so badly. it is humid here also in oklahoma at times. texas as you know can be hot as well. I'am from the EAST coast line and weather there can be hot and humid to. I thought california was hot and humid but i guess the air is different there. I did not know the baseball player satchel paige was buried in that cemetary thats interesting to know, but seems like from that area to the east coast line is filled with confederate graves, i have family buried in upper part of VA they were in the confed war. they died of disease. sorry you had to sweat so badly there. thankyou for the hard work it is appreciated by me. I know what you mean about merciless humidity. I grew up in Ohio and hated those days, so I moved to California while I was still young. I live on the coast where 70 degrees is too warm for me.
The Lillenas hymn you highlighted greeted me when I stepped inside a very large Baptist church in Ohio many years ago. It's been a favorite of mine since.

Thanks Michael! While I love the beauty of the Midwest and the friendliness of the folks there, and and simplicity of life, the humidity would give me great pause in ever moving there! California is getting so bad with traffic and cost of living and homelessness and the like.

The Truman gravesite is fascinating. I agree with your reasoning on the grandeur of the stone there - definitely looks 1940’s. I grew up knowing of Satchel Paige. He made quite an impression on my Dad-I learned of him while my Dad taught me how to throw and catch a baseball. Wow! This was great!

# 6 all the humidity, is why my wife and I go to Cebu, PH in Nov. - March - still hot but not as bad as during the summer.
Heading there on Nov. 15th 2023 Great story as usual, maybe better then some even.

The people who founded this country and those that followed were tough as nails and smart as can be. Imagine walking or riding horse or buggy of one kind or another with little or no protection from the elements. Maybe you can do a future video on how the people of the past used or had certain kinds of survival skills and the evolution of them. Another great video, thanks for sharing.

The name of Crittendon rang a bell with me. I had to think on it, but it came to me. I was thinking of the character Colonel Crittendon on Hogan's Heros played by Bernard Fox. I think you've talked about him before. I do appreciate the effort you put in to giving the videos. I hope you drank a lot of water and cooled off afterwards.

Another great episode, Jeff. I sympathize with you with the midwestern heat. My wife and I attended a fall festival in Kentucky yesterday, I was pretty sure we were going to melt in the streets.
It certainly can be brutal. The humidity is like adding a blanket to 100° weather.
Humid weather is brutal Jeff, I remember during USAF basic training in San Antonio, TX, just walking out the door in a newly heavily starched uniform and immediately becoming saturated in sweat! No fun for sure, thanks for taking one for the team. Very interesting video today and thanks for the research and old pictures and videos too.

as a kid i got to play ball with Satchel my dad work with Satchel in the 70' and early 80's when dad would take me to work with him, he tells me to bring my glove and ball during lunch me and Satchel would play ball he would drive up get out put on his old glove and we throw the ball back and forth until he had to leave to go back and work he would give me a hug and tell me he love to stay and play ball all day but he had to leave last time we got to play was just before he pass

Jeff, from what I’ve heard from you I take it you don’t care for our weather in the Midwest ( I’m in Omaha). I agree with you the heat mixed with the high humidity can be overwhelming.
Satchel Paige is right about not looking behind you in life. I’ve always heard it, “Don’t look back you’re not going that way.”
I grew up in Michigan. Brutally muggy in the summertime. Got stationed in Lemoore, CA and loved the low humidity. Got out of the Navy and went back to Michigan and could no longer handle the humidity. Moved to Arizona. I know exactly how you feel Jeff!
Definitely uninhabitable without air conditioning! Ha ha

Great video I live outside of kc my mom worked 30 years for hallmark cards before retiring she thought the world of JC Hall ,by the way had 2 great grandfathers inscribed (forced) into the union army to defend the Carrollton courthouse they were captured and sent back home by the confederates
