That was bad enough, but I don't think the brutality of how he killed her was ever known. I am shocked. What a horrible man. I hope his daughter was able to get past what she witnessed and have a good life.

Very familiar. I reside in Elizabeth Lake, not far from his former 'melody ranch' near Willow Springs. One of his unrealized aspirations was to build a family amusement park - ('waterworld'). This idea he came up with after seeing what Disney did in Buena Park. He actually started on this and to this days one can still see the tall berms which were to outline the park. 'Melody Ranch' where this horrific crime took place still stands, not more than one half mile from the proposed park.

@@jbenziggy Sure thing, Jeff. I just posted a GoogleMaps link but evidently it violates policy so I'll just type it out for you. The house is still very much there and appears that very little has changed over the decades. Located on 105th St W. between Dawn Road to the north and Favorito Ave. to the south in Rosamond, Ca. It's the home at the end of a treelined driveway. Last time (probably 5+ years ago) I was there, there was a small wooden sign at the left side of the driveway entrance with a "melody ranch" inscription. If you pan out and look directly east, or to the right - You'll see what look like two large crop circles. Look just south across the road (Favorito) and you'll see the remnants, or (berms) of the proposed waterpark. It's desolate desert out there. Much more so back in '61. Just googling 105th St W and Favorito will get you to the map page. I recall my parents being VERY angry with then (mid/late 60's) Governor and (future president) Ronald Reagan who was a close pal of Cooley's. He personally intervened and officials decided to allow Cooley to have a three-day furlough in Nov 1969 so that he could perform at a concert to benefit the Alameda County Sheriff's Department, afterwhich he'd be set free early in 1970. You know the rest. My mother in particular, though Dad too, were particularly distraught at the very notion Reagan would play such a big role in Cooley's release. Though staunch lifelong conservatives - They never voted for the man again. - doc

Really enjoy your videos - though your conservative beliefs are shared many times in your videos. Just to add is that Cooley had a parole hearing after serving eight years, in August 1969. His friends in Hollywood had been lobbying Governor Ronald Reagan, who threw his support behind Cooley being released on parole; the state review board voted to grant Cooley a release on parole, effective February 1970. My point being... Reagan was not a Left leaning Governor nor President but worked for this monster’s release.

Spade was an evil man who committed an atrocity against his wife, his children, and the rest of his family.
It’s abhorrent that celebrities are often given preferential treatment when it comes to bad behavior, crime, and other areas of life.
Spade’s light sentence and the friendly treatment that he continued to receive from people after he murdered his wife was unacceptable.
Alcohol and drugs may contribute to a person’s violent and unacceptable behaviors, but they definitely are not excuses for that bad behavior or a justification for lighter sentences.
People are responsible for what the put into their bodies even if they are addicted.
People with charming and charismatic personalities are sometimes allowed to get away with criminal and other unacceptable behaviors due to their likable personalities even when they aren’t celebrities.
It is possible to be a superficially nice person without actually being a good person. A false friendly facade can help a bad person ingratiate themselves to victims and other people in general.
People often have a different personality in private that is only known to their close family and friends than the personality that they display in public. Sometimes only the immediate family or close family knows someone’s true personality.
Often with celebrities, people have a hard time separating the public personality, or even the personality of whatever characters the celebrity may have portrayed, with the true, private personality of the celebrity.
I would argue that this is what in part allowed Bill Cosby to become a serial rapist as people had a hard time believing that the likable “Dr. Cliff Huxtable” could commit such heinous crimes.
There is sometimes the tendency, especially in the past, to overlook domestic violence as it’s viewed as a private matter. The home is oddly viewed as a place by some people where violence and abuse is acceptable.
Interestingly, schools are also viewed as places by some where violence and abuse is acceptable. This is evidenced by the rampant bullying that is allowed.
It’s disgusting that Spade’s grave is marked with the words “Beloved Father” as he murdered the mother of two of his kids in front of one of them. There is also the fact that he paid to abort at least 10 of his other kids.
I’d like to know who the heck put that nonsense on his grave. I’m guessing that one or more of his siblings were responsible for handing his funeral arrangements as his parents were dead and his children were minors.

He had a dream I was cheating on him which he believed he never would have had if I hadn’t cheated. Of course, he cheated so I must have as well. I never did even during our separation. Can you imagine? I tried to convince him otherwise, but he’d have none of it. Of course, at the time, I was oblivious to what he was doing. I had no reason to think he was cheating. I was young and very trusting. Only well afterward did I realize his behavior was because of what he had been doing. I just didn’t know. My mom used to love watching Lawrence Welk and remember him very well. She loved all kinds of music but I don't think she liked Cooley's type of music. In comparison was this really any less brutal than the Manson murders that ironically happened the same year Cooley died.

I found an interesting article about Cooley's son written in 1995 that he talked about receiving letters from his father 34 years after he was sentenced for the murder. Looks like the son was on good terms with his father before he died, and said he was with him at his last concert when he collapsed backstage. He claimed his father died in his arms. His sister and him never got a dime from his father's estate. He was also a musician and songwriter at the time the article was written. Wrote a song about his father titled "Tears on my Pillow." I would gladly send you a copy of the article if you have not seen it and are interested.

A 'tragedy' is a gross understatement. The 'good ol' boy' mentality that viewed this mindset as 'the norm' especially by the law enforcement, remains despicable. Yet it also remains a conundrum as to how we look at the music a derailed musician left in his wake. There is no excuse for Cooley's deeds, same as Jerry Lee Lewis', Phil Spector's, Chuck Berry's. Jim Gordon's' and others. But for years I've wrestled with: Is their music then to be ignored as a result? Some of these musicians have made indelible marks on the history of the music we've grown up with, but by adding to it's legacy, are we thereby condoning their personal deeds? Many internal reasons have come into play aiding their actions, but are we to sit and enjoy their art without regard? Likewise, are we to deny ourselves of the good that did come from their lives? Judging the art, and the person, separately, is this how we are to view it? In some cases, I'd concede, but I'm glad that there are Bob Wills, and countless other Western Swing artists to listen to, so as not to be haunted by his daughter Melody's image.
