Wonderful tips. My camera comes with a Starlight view mode to help with composition in pitch black situations, it's very useful.

When you are getting your composition turning up your iso helps then turn it down to take the shot.
Awesome video! Bright monitoring is also a great way to help compose your shots in a really dark environment. I feel like I may have learned that tip from some of Autumn's content. Made a huge difference for me! I'm going to have to try some higher ISO values. I've been a bit conservative apparently.

Great introductory video to astrophotography. I have tried a little astrophotography before, with some fairly decent results. I use to follow the late Alyn Wallace, but he went far beyond what I would consider that I am competent at.

Thanks for sharing your experience. One thing I’ve stumbled into whilst learning to take long shutter speed images is to kill off any image-stabilising gizmos. It avoids what looks like shake even when you know there’s no source of it.
This is a good thing to keep an eye out for. Not all cameras struggle with this, but for the cameras that do it can be very frustrating to try and figure out!

So good, Nate! Thanks for the lesson! I’m a newb with all of this and every shot I took with my sony of the Aurora a week and a half ago had blurry stars. lol. I had no idea what I was doing. Thankfully, the iPhone was able to grab a bunch of great shots. Now I can go practice with the milky way!!
Practice is really the only way to truly figure it out!
First off great video! I love how you explain every part of the process and very easy to understand. I totally agree it doesn’t matter what gear you have. With that said the Nikon Z8 has light up button to make shooting astrophotography easier. 😉

Thanks Nate! Question for you. Do you use focus stacking or any tracking systems... or did you consider that beyond "Basics of ..." Thank you. This gives me actionable insight for the equipment that I currently have.
I definitely consider that WAY beyond "basics of" but those are definitely great options if you're trying to get more advanced! I think compositing a blue-hour foreground with a night sky from the same location is a great way to advance beyond the basics without getting too far into the weeds with stacking/blending/etc.
