everybody talks about how great is to setup a vpn on a router, but nobody talks about the drawbacks: In my case my router reduces the Internet speed from 94Mbs to 7Mbts, a reduction of 90%. this is an area I have not seen ANY comments. I don't care about my wifi ( I already have a mesh wifi), but routers do not advertise its CPU performance very well!
Thank you so much, the first option worked like a charm on my T-Mobile 5G internet Inseego router. FYI: I had to disable my VPN connection just to be able to leave this comment as I continued to receive "Comment failed to post". I was able to re-enable my VPN on my router and I can leave comments on channels now.
Can you only install a VPN on a 3rd party router? I don’t think you can install a VPN on an ISP router. ISP routers are not that customisable to allow you to install a VPN on them. Correct me if I am wrong.
I have a TPLink router and the setup screen shows that it does indeed allow a VPN setup. Is it possible to pick and choose which devices will get the VPN access or is it an all or nothing type of thing? For instance, I only want my Apple TV, Firestick and Windows computer to use the VPN. I do not want my family's Iphones to use it because I have heard there are issues with IMessage and facetime calls when connected to a VPN. Thanks for any help!
Most TP-Link routers only support the L2TP connection, which is a very outdated protocol and not very secure. If you're running stock firmware - I wouldn't recommend it!
Thanks for the video - I work from home so I used a work VPN to log in and get stuff done. I'm hardwired to my modem. I just got a new one, netgear nighthawk and now I'm having issues connecting to my work VPN. Once I log in, it starts connecting, then it drops, connects, then drops, it'll do this for hours. Do you have any tips or insight on why that is?
I have a question for personal reasons , i want to work from another country and keep my US remote job. Will this method work to trick set the location of my IP in the US so my employer does not track me? Further details are that i have some kind of monitoring software in my work computer i think it's very invasive but would this somehow be able to know if i'm using a VPN from my router? (The software they use is called ivandi employee monitoring)
Hey! If you will set up a VPN on your router with a server that is located in the US, your work shouldn't be able to see you anywhere else besides the US location. Sadly, I'm not too sure about the Invadi employee monitoring service, as I'm not too familiar with it, but if it only determines your location from your IP address - there should be no issues!

Here is my situation I have a IPTV box (MAG254) which will not connect to my internet, I get a Error code 1020. I beleive it is because my ISP provider is blocking the IPTV's portal address. Great instructional segment, however, here is my situation I have a IPTV box (MAG254) which will not connect to my internet, I get a Error code 1020. I have an ASUS RT-5300. I signed up for Surfshark and am using the OpenVPN. Problem is the slow speeds. I selected the "Fastest" connection which is about 50 miles from my home. If I use the TCP config I can't get past 5mbps. If I go to the UDP config file, I can get up to 25mbps. Can someone advise me here? What am I losing with the UDP file? Even with this file, my internet speed is cut in half.
Having a similar issue. My internet without VPN active is 260Mbps and with OpenVPN with Surfshark at closest location drops to 63Mbps. 60+ isn't bad but there is a lot of band width that I'm paying for that is getting eaten up.
@@scotthiland5521 I gave up on using a VPN in my home network. Reason being poor performance. The overhead drag on my speeds became unacceptable but more than that, I had at least half of my software would not run with the VPN active. I kept having to "PAUSE" the VPN while I ran something. Got to the point that I just gave up on it. I do use a VPN on my CELL phone when traveling. It seems to work well. Nice to access any public wifi and know that the VPN has my back.
You can try adding multiple VPN servers, but older Asus firmware models tend to act up if you add multiple configurations. Nevertheless, you can give it a try and if it doesn't work - delete it.:)
