This is so interesting. The intensity with relationship is exactly what Martin buber wrote in the book "i and thou". You start with yourself, then seek for connection and when you found connection, you have a relationship. This principle is embedded in the Hebrew language it self. Amazing, really.

The Menorah is a helpful tool for so many Hebrew concepts. 3 days of arrangement on 1 side, 3 days of adornment on the other side. Where do Creation day and the Sabbath go though? That is a question worthy of discussion.

Hi Rut. I have been using your videos and books to augment my ulpan classes to good effect. One question. I have finished the Paal regular drills. Should I keep going with Paal irregular verbs now or move on to Nifal regular verbs? Thanks!

hi there. if you do not know the binyan, you fo not know the conjugation patter. Sure, you can memorize everything but this means that a) it will always be difficult because you do not know why you do it, b) you will never really master the language and draw conclusions how to get from a verb to a noun for example and c) you will stay limited to what you memorized. 😉

I couldn't understand what 'Binyanim' was and Wikipedia wasn't useful at all about this subject. Now I understand it, but I don't really understand what the use of it is...
Hello E, the "use" is relative. If English is your first language you might have some more effort to do since the structure is much more simple than in other languages. Did you learn other languages than Hebrew? In foreign languages we need to know how to conjugate them. For this there are groups, every verb belongs to a conjugation group. What I presented here is the background to help you soon navigate through the language on your own. I hope it helps :-)

Hi -- a few comments on your study plan. You went to some length to tell us that not every verb exists across all binyanim. Wouldn't the best route be to study verbs that exist in multiple formats?
Second, what about shoreshim and learning about strong and weak verbs to help you understand how patterns go in each binyan. Do you touch on these at all?
And finally, I can't place the accent, but it does not sound Israeli.

I am sure there are many ways of learning a language. I have presented a study plan that I know that it works for most folks, especially for those that have already studied at least one other language. It is in my opinion and from what I experienced the least confusing approach to Hebrew verbs.
It does not mean that this is the best plan for you. If you find a better one, great! You have to choose what you feel best with. But this plan, that I presented here is a coherent and logic approach. There might be others out there, but this here is the one I taught over years and it helped my students to make big steps forwards.

Thank you very much for this video. Unfortunately the Ulpan-Book has exactly the opposite approach to your # 3. All the verbs come totally mixed using the present tense. Even the infinitive came very late and then only with the new verbs. Total balagan! Therefore, I'm really greateful to have finally some tool to learn the logic behind it.

It would be better to present the basic form of the verbs in the third person masculine singular of the perfective form rather than the infinitive, especially since verbs in some binyanim have no infinitive.
Before I order these books I need to know if they are written with niqqudim in them (difficult to learn and remeber if one doesnt know how to pronounciate the words). Does anybody know?
Hello, thank you for coming to this video series.
The text book is subdevided in binyanim, each binyan chapter uses nikud as well as transliteration. Only the main introduction, which gives a general overview and uses only some verbs here and there, is without. When we look into each binyan, everything is with nikud and transliteration. As well, the pronunciation and its patterns are explained.
The workbook is without nikud as the main focus is here to recognize and conjugate all verbs AFTER you studied with the textbook. By that time you should not need the nikud any longer for verbs. The text book explains also when and why pronunciation changes.
Please go to Amazon and have a look into the book. I hope it gives you a clearer picture.

Page 36 of your book has a typo, top says past tense for לסגור but I think it’s supposed to say Future. Are there any other typos we should be aware of?

Thank you for writing. I assume you got the German book. Actually, there was only 1 mistake in the introduction, but not in the teaching itself. On page 13, the last sentence should correctly end like this "... und befindet sich im Binyan Nifal." But in the first edition it says "...Binyan Hifil." This is wrong.
We did some other minor corrections that have nothing to do with the language teaching. We basically reeditetd the book. On page 26 it says " b) pey-wav" but the example is about ayin-wav.

Hi David, you might be right. I have been thinking about it but the fact that sooo many ebooks can be later found for free, illegally circulating on the internet, completely stopped me from pursuing a solution for the different formats (Hebrew does not diplay well on all devices, only PDF is a guarantee). But if you have an idea how to prevent illegal sharing, I might change my mind.
@@HebrewVerbs one way might be coded PDF files. Each purchase will generate a unique code that may be used only once. This method though effective, still won't prevent 100% piracy, but will reduce it significantly.
I think that the volume of the sales worth the risk, as the younger generation prefers everything to be available on their devices.
Or maybe wording example 3:05 this way:
* PAAL -> learn לומד
* PIEL -> cause to learn (teach) מלמד

Many other instructional sites state that Hitpael is Reflexive, not just involving 2 or more people....which is more correct?

Thanks for writing. I am happy to see you involved, many others will learn from your question.
Hitpael groups "mainly" verbs that are reciprocal. Hitpael also has verbs that are describing the state of "becoming", e.g. something is "getting wet".
However, in every language, there are exceptions. There are indeed verbs that escape this logic. Well... learning a language we will also ways come across this challenge.
This video is supposed to give you a compass. The exceptions are described in more depth in the book ;-)

Qal קל itself means easy. That indicates that pa'al binyan had the easiest (just relatively compared to other binyanim) conjugations.

this was difficult to parse, but i assume what you mean is that you believe that since many languages use writing systems derived from that of phoenician, you assume that that makes all languages semetic. the writing system that a language uses is not at all indicative of the roots of a language. writing systems are just a way of writing language, and as such do not have any influence on the origins of the language just because you write the language mainly using that writing system. for example, a few centuries ago, korean used to be written with the chinese character set, even though its linguistic roots are different from those of chinese. another example is vietnamese, which is written with the latin alphabet. vietnamese is not a romance language.
