Music is a tradition nearly as old as humankind itself, so it's no wonder our brains have developed interesting ways of interacting with and responding to it. Here are just a few of the ways music impacts our psychology.

Last year I suffered neuralgic pain. The medication that helps takes 14 days to kick in. Then I discovered that the music of bagpipe’s made the pain bearable. For hours I listened to bagpipe concerts and parades.

My parents say that I cried sad tears in reaction to music even as an infant. Not because it was loud or scary. But because it moved me.

One odd thing I noticed with my 1 year old niece is there are upbeat songs where she instinctively taps her feet. Nobody taught her that, and she looks confused and happy at the same time. Goes to show that our distinct response to certain music is in our genes.

i think the sensory gating thing might play a part in how ADHD has 2 modes: inattentive or leaky gating, and hyperfocus mode or selective gating.

The narrative is Emotions are chemicals.
Not impulses . If emotions weren't impulses music wouldn't work.
And arguing if emotions were impulses wave length drugs wouldn't work.
That's pretty much arguing if Light is energy Fog atmosphere wouldn't have any affects

    This is really cool stuff!
I'm convinced though that "music" is not the right word for it. Especially if one talks about it being universal.

So, I can't dance, and don't go to clubs (unless dragged there by friends). BUT I love a lot of melodic / uplifting Trance. Many years ago, I bought my first CD with trance music, just because I liked the melody when it was played over loud speakers. I used some of those songs on my "Walking Tape" (this was back in the days of Walkmans). I noticed something really cool when walking to some of those trance tunes - at certain points, I actually felt myself get MORE energetic, even if I had been flagging before. It usually happens shortly after the end of the breakdown (a quieter section of the composition with little or not beat, and usually showcasing the melody). As various rhythms get put back in, I could feel myself energizing, until a moment when the music feels the most FULL (not sure how else to describe it).
What I didn't know at the time was that that's kind of how the music was BUILT. It was after all, dance music, music to move to. But my body seemed to understand it.

I definitely have impaired or leaky sensory gating, and I'm pretty creative. I cannot change it at all, so I do own several ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones. Lol. Thanks for giving me a name to my issue! :)

Whether I can block out noises or not really really depends. There are times where my brain is overstimmulated by everything amd nothing works. When I work in a restaurant or fast food I can generally block out distractions and work without music. I can mentally zone out to focus on what I'm doing, no problem. (Though before and after hrs when I'm doing all the little things to keep the place clean and running, I need music.) But at my warehouse job I pretty much need music. One it is super repetitive and I don't need to really think to do it. I'm not trying to simultaneously keep track and memorize multiple orders at a time as I help to take them, make them, help with prep, and keep track of prepared food. Music is often very helpful for me at work.
Now when I'm trying to clean, write, or focus for more paper work type stuff where I'm not physically moving around, then I pretty much have to have quiet. I can't mentally focus as well. Even if it's quiet, I generally have to have music to block out the wold around me so I can focus and not get overstimmulated.

Have you found any reputable scientific papers on the matter?
For one, the show isn't required to share EVERYTHING about what they're talking about
And if there's not much research on a subject, especially trustworthy information, they're probably not going to include it
And especially considering they DID touch on the subject and DIDN'T say what you're bringing up, there probably wasn't reputable information on the subject. Or maybe it just ended up on the cutting room floor, but I find the former more likely
