People REALLY need to understand how NECESSARY these new trains are. The current trains on the L have breaks that are failing WAYYY too often and are breaking down, even though the train isn’t even that old for a metro system. This is due mostly to the manufacturer adtranz (now alstom) not building the cars well, compared to Kawasaki who build the older Broad Street trains which are still doing just fine. But since these lines use different track sizes, unfortunately the two lines can’t share fleet
So instead of giving us more information about the new train cars, y'all decided to spent time critiquing the figures in the renderings? And adding a cartoon character into the images? Reliability has gone down a lot in the transit industry. The old "Almond Joy" Budd M3 cars for the Market Frankford Line ran from 1963 to 1999. That's 36 years, which was a good run. However, SEPTA had to make plans to replace them when the Eastbound train derailed inside the 30th Street Station back in 1990 due to a mechanical problem. About a few people died in that incident, and others were seriously injured. Then in 1996, AdTranz, began delivery of the current El cars we ride on today, but they went bankrupt as soon as the last train was delivered to SEPTA. Hopefully, SEPTA upgrades it maintenance department to handle the tech that comes with these new trains as well.
I think that's why it's taking until 2029 which is quite generous for a complete fleet replacement project. I just hope they aren't like CRRC, and are more reliable and actually on time.
I rode SEPTA bus & L last ten years and worked in large maintenance shops and know SEPTA does the minimum required maintenance. They want 200 new L cars when they only run 96 cars 20 jours a week during rhsh hour. Do they need over 100 spare cars. Why ?

Interesting. I wonder why SEPTA is looking into replacing the fleet on the market Frankford line, before the fleet on the broad Street line. Considering that the broad Street line fleet was built in the early 1980s. While the current fleet on the market Frankford line, was built in the late 90s.
@JackDaniels-tx4qx not sure what u mean bro. But NYC was gonna use money from taxing ppl who drive into the city ( south Manhattan ). They put that idea on hold for a while. No new trains coming. Safety on Septa is a critical problem but it's not exactly up to them to decide the city is divided and septa services multiple areas of influence while I agree safety is a critical problem that's not Septa's fault the city couldn't afford to put a homeless shelter near the station.
Along with this, they need to purchase new Broadstreet line cars, as well as build at least 5 to 6 additional subway lines. And restore old regional rail, lines, such as West Chester, Allentown and Reading. Likewise with all of the discounted trolly lines. Septa can actually be something.
@@albertcarello619 Not exactly true If the city decided to take some money that they put in their lazy local politicians they could turn multiple parking lots into homeless shelters around the station to accommodate those less fortunate instead of laughing and looking down on their misfortune. And again, that's not up to septa to decide and this is a principal places like for example in Australia have done. While we're at building new infrastructure around the stations we might was well build affordable housing while we're at it that allows us to reinvest into our community's mainly around downtown and suburban stations with too much parking.
Likely mostly imported shell designs and complete construction in the US on one of Septa's many depots there are a number of answers to your question, but this is one of them.
Why do lazy lack of even minimum maintenance SEPTA need over 100 doare L cars ? They only run the most cars maybe 20 hours a week during weekday rush hours. Other times less then 76 cars.
And same complaints from riders. Trust me Septa is beyond familiar with these complaints, but they just have to take it one step at a time. With the limited funding they get to improve these problems definitely isn't enough to fix everything but like I said they have to take it one step at a time while not straining their limited budget.
This is pathetic. Just finished a tour of Asia and US is being left behind severely. Most subways in Asia look like King of Prussia mall with shopping centers in them, and a city the size of Philly should have at least 3-5 lines with 15 stops each. It's at a point where you can see how obvious coming back how the economy is being held at a stranglehold with terrible daily traffic jam and terrible public transport which people then don't use and then don't fund and then is full of crime, which results in a death spiral. By the time we get these new cars in 2030, Bangkok will get a new line extension they just announced last week with 11 stations and 29 stations in that line newly finished. Good thing the federal government has billions to make aircraft carriers, and send billions to Ukraine and Israel.
This is doomed from the start. Overpriced, and over promised. The money is already gone. Reason for a new fleet, maintenance cost on simple cars is too high. Answer... ad screens for people to smash, regen brakes that cost more than you know and will crush your budget when they need maintenance, and more windows because structural integrity isn't a problem when it needs to last 30 years. 750 million for no more than 250 cars. That wasn't the point though. The point was to increase speed, capacity, frequency, and make repair on cars easier faster and using the limited money they get to try and fix basic problems before they get to ahead of themselves.
Thats more of a city issue Septa is not really responsibility. For an issue like that you could go or text your local city council for the street you mentioned to be filled in or repaved in an extreme case depending on the age of the road.
Not really Septa's fault only real solution is for local governments to implement homeless shelters around the station. while we're at it we could also build more affordable jobs and housing around the stations to solve the problem of those less fortunate. Rather than letting them suffer for something out of there control.
What about the people who pee and poop on the train?! Fix that too! And fix the free rider situation as well! Otherwise these new expensive trains will be destroyed in no time.
American liberal cities are trying to be more European, except in the wrong way. Money should be spent on expanding transit network coverage amd increasing frequencies. However, Americans have this obsession with car infrastructure and are unwilling to reduce car lanes to make room for dedicated bus lanes and trolley tracks. The only way to make a city well connected is to limit cars to make room and provide incentives for people to take the public transit.
That started in the 50-60-70 decades The idea of owning a car for personal freedom was pitched as part of the American dream. So the car lobby and auto industry bought out washington and created a car based society. Add in fear of anything publicly funded as “socialist” and “eventually communist” and you have a society allergic to trains and busses.
Boeing made streetcars and L trains for a while. The trains were good, the streetcars were unreliable. The University of West Virginia still uses their Boeing Vertol people mover.
For a transit project in a city that already underfunds its mass transit with a large network in the US of all places this is a pretty good timeline. Just remember they have to conduct multiple safety audits by the FRA Speta and the additionally have to both be built and shipped in the US likely across the country and if that wasn't enough also have to fall under a tight budget and drivers have to be trained on the new train sets while platforms likely also need renovations or extensions to accommodate the new train sets along with yards and crews who also have to be trained to repair the sets. 2029 is generous for the trains to be in service let alone serving passengers.
@utah2nyc250 You fundamentally misunderstood my point. By investing whatever we can now in the long term, we will help everyone who uses the system or not. In addition, if you honestly expect people to keep up 30-40 year old train cars, you honestly just be ridiculous. This change is something Septa is doing. If you have a problem with the city, you can always take it up to the local city hall or police if you prefer. The Public Transit Authority got that money from a federal loan grant. Septa is honestly already underfunded this is the first thing they need to do. The point is to improve safety, reliability, comfort, and just basic sure people are OK while on Septa. They have been trying to get an order for new train cars since 2019 this is the best thing they can do for now.
As others have pointed out, you’re not understanding how this project is even possible. It was a grant from the government allocated by an Infrastructure Bill from Department of Transportation thanks to Joe Biden. That money could not have been used for anything else even if they wanted to. It strictly needed to be used for transportation related purposes…but yes, those problems still need fixing but some problems there’s not an amount of money in the world that could fix it.
I agree there are more major problems but, Gun, and Drug issues are far more of a state and National issue. Mental Health is neglected especially in the US, but you also have to consider that the investment was into transit to improve the speed safety, convinces frequency and most importantly cost. relying on of 30-50-year-old infostructure for another 10 years will cost way more money than that needs to be spent and will save the city money to prioritize things such as mental health in the long term. As for the homelessness issue with all the money that would be saved from this investment around existing transit stations can be made to provide jobs, housing, basically anything other than more parking, and dead space.
I feel like you missed the point of the purchase of the cars. The point was to improve speed, capacity, comfort and frequency. Along with saving money for Septa and the government in the long term. And the grant was given by the city it was by the federal government the city only approves the project. If there are that many issues for out of state tuition in public/community colleges, and university's that's not the fault of the transit authority I recommend going to the school board, and city about issues like that.
@@mataisgood9046 The local government only does things to please out of state college students none of the money from federal grants seems to benefit the residents. Money for infrastructure is being put into infrastructure in center city and anywhere there’s a temple building the rest of the city never sees that money.
Not exactly Septa's responsibility they are the mass transit authority for Trains, Buses, Trams, Trolley buses, and Light rail. The roads are something you should communicate with to your local government you can file a complaint and depending on where you live can be done in as little as a few hours.

The idea of owning a car for personal freedom was pitched as part of the American dream. So the car lobby and auto industry bought out washington and created a car based society.
Add in fear of anything publicly funded as “socialist” and “eventually communist” and you have a society allergic to trains and busses.
Polar express people😂
Yeaaaa New Toilets for the addicts!!!!
GTA effects

This Should be interesting...Philadelphia people definitely tearing up this New Train
I'll ride anything that's not made by Boeing 😎
Boeing made streetcars and L trains for a while. The trains were good, the streetcars were unreliable. The University of West Virginia still uses their Boeing Vertol people mover.
2029 😂😂 Dirtydelphia it’s hilarious
For a transit project in a city that already underfunds its mass transit with a large network in the US of all places this is a pretty good timeline. Just remember they have to conduct multiple safety audits by the FRA Speta and the additionally have to both be built and shipped in the US likely across the country and if that wasn't enough also have to fall under a tight budget and drivers have to be trained on the new train sets while platforms likely also need renovations or extensions to accommodate the new train sets along with yards and crews who also have to be trained to repair the sets. 2029 is generous for the trains to be in service let alone serving passengers.
@@mataisgood9046 shut up bro Dirtydelphia it’s literally a 3 rd world country the last thing they need it’s new train carts
@@utah2nyc250until you learn how to spell, respectfully STFU
MTA can learn something from this. Doesn't hurt.
We don’t need this we need that money to fight the gun, drug, mental health and homelessness epidemics in our city!!!!
Ok stop wasting money we need jobs first and foremost that’s nice for out of state college students but the citizens have close to nothing.
What about broad street nasty dirty trains
Not exactly Septa's responsibility they are the mass transit authority for Trains, Buses, Trams, Trolley buses, and Light rail. The roads are something you should communicate with to your local government you can file a complaint and depending on where you live can be done in as little as a few hours.
Keep septa cleaned 🧹 that is the biggest problem
They do a better job than they used to.
As a nyer who rode septa. Septa is much more cleaner than mta
