John you are one of my favorite guitar dudes out there. Your playing is the physical manifestation of BBQ Sauce.
Yo Ryan, thank you, amigo. You are a killer guitarist and great musician.
Very well put!!! LOL
Christ it's true
I read that with a pronounced lisp
@Workhorse Productions Physical manifestation of the taste of BBQ sauce.
This player actually knows how to demo an amp's sound. Rare specimen you are Sir. Regardless of your musical tastes, you can relate to the sound of this terrific amp. Thanks!
Hi Brother 🏄🏽♀️
Absolutely beautiful playing and tone, you really made that amp sing. I’m so pleasantly surprised by these Tone Master variants Fender is making. What a time to be a guitar player!
Yeah! I have been waiting for this amp and John’s demo. Thanks.
Eagerly awaiting the Tonemaster Tweed Deluxe.
Oh man, that would be amazing! Fender please!
Or a '62 Princeton.
Fender, stop defiling these classic amps FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!!!
For what these tone masters suck, just spend the few extra hundred on the actually tube amp…
@@Bob-Sacamano314 not to mention you can get a vintage handwired point to point silverface fender amp for MUCH MUCH less than these pieces of garbage
Thank you Premier Guitar and John Bohlinger for this awesome review, and for having mentioned the quartet of Jensen AlNiCo P10R speakers that give voice to this great amplifier!
I’m still getting over the trauma that was the CyberTwin
Yeah but Buddy Guy played them.

who else but the great Johnny B would think of playing Son of a Preacher Man in a demo! Fantastic !!!
John, you are the best guy to review this particular amp. Thank you for for covering all the tonal parameters and attenuation positions, great job.
I’ve seen so many of those Rig Rundown videos over the years, where you humbly & enthusiastically watch great players go over their stuff, while sorta embarrassingly, i had no idea you were such a great player yourself!
Always love this guys playing. I picked up one of these a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. Was always a tube only guy, not any more
I can't believe how amazing this amp is. I am getting one ASAP! Thank you FENDER!!~!!!
Always love to tone of a Super. The only thing I hate about them is they can double as an anchor for aircraft carriers. Glad Fender did this new reissue!
DI seemed pretty compressed at first, but after a few secs you forget it and just go w it, I love DI its just so easy. Killer as always JB
Love it. Great playing as usual John! I think this is the one people have been waiting on. The weight savings is a big deal. I have a vintage Super but never take it out because it's so heavy. Well done Fender!
Fender, it's time to revisit single amp modelling pedals. The tech is there now. I'd buy a Super Reverb pedal with a direct out (if it can take third party IRs). I'm not in the market for these tonemasters since my gigging tube amp is already pretty much the same weight and has great attenuation. But I'd sure go for a backup/alternative rig with a single Fender amp model - Super or '59 Bassman - that I could send straight to the PA and a floor wedge.
I don't that you could fit this into a single pedal form factor right now. Would probably require a pedal amp size box
Original SansAmp pedal or try the Behringer GDI21 clone. I have the pedal version and it is a sweet little unit. Having the DI out might be an option for you.
@@droliver It doesn't need an amp if it's going straight into the PA. And I'm guessing the Class D power amp is making up the bulk of the circuitry. I'm pretty sure the tech would fit in a stompbox.
@@brandonlesko3126 The old analogue units may sound good in themselves, but they are simply not up to the task of accurately sounding like a particular vintage tube amp and mimicking it's behaviour at different settings.
@@wabisabi6802 These are good units, no doubt. But not quite the single vintage amp in a stompbox that you can confidently plug into the PA. The WA has a lot of options, and of course is limited to the usual Deluxe Reverb, Vox, and Marshall - not my fave Fenders like the '59 Bassman and Super Reverb.
The Revival Drive seems to need some extra bits and bobs to go straight into the PA with a third party IR.
I think there's still a market for a one amp replacement/backup for a tube amp that's really just a plug-'n-play, set-and-forget replacement for a classic vintage amp.
Liked the Hendrixy jam with the tele. Sounded like a mash of Castles and Little Wing.
I liked the occasional practice with the guitars and bass sharing the same amp. It really forces everyone to lock in.
I want one! I have a blackface since 1965. It weighs a ton tho. This would be interesting. My fav Fender!
Great demo of a great amp. My first amp was a 1964 Super Reverb, and this Tone Master sounds better than the tube version I had. Plus the Tone Master has additional great features. John, I loved your story of your first entire band playing through a Super Reverb. My first gig was three electric guitars and a mic running into a Gibson tube amp that might have put out 20 Watts on a good day. Talk about dirt!
I wish I had some of those chops...
That couch looks comfy.
How many picks are under the cushions?
Dang the camera is awesome!! I can see all kinds of detail! and the tele deluxe just is calling me!! Great demo JB.
Great demo hoping a Princeton is next
Harsh and spikey when John digs in.
Trem sounds good.
I hope to be able to play “Little Wing” one day and play it well, in the meantime John is “not” playing it better than I ever could
🤘🏻😂
You’re the man! 🙌🏻❤️
Damn man. Your playing never fails to impress me. Especially those twangy country licks on that tele.
Also, I cannot wait to get this amp!!
John - great demo! I've never been much into Country Music but I really like your demos. I had a Fender Super Reverb in college and around 1966/1967 and stupidly sold it to get a Standel Artist XII (what the Rascals were using). I still miss that Super Reverb, including the arms on the side that let you tilt it back to better project the sound.
John you are WORTH YOUR WEIGHT in Gold.
⚓️ Thanks Jon, PG. 😎
Great review and i'm seriously tempted to buy one. But why didn't Fender take the opportunity to add an FX loop? It's a digital amp, they could add that without any impact to the tone.
An effects loop would require ADC to preamp simulation then DAC to FX loop, then another ADC to power amp simulation then second DAC to the power amp and speaker. Without the loop, it removes the need for split DSP and reduces the ADC-DAC requirement to a single set of conversions.
@@jilljill6542 I hear ya, but if they can go to the hassle of that for the 'lesser' digital amps I think they missed a trick on the Tone Masters.
I tried one today. It was awesome. Lack of FX loop is the only thing stopping me from pulling the trigger.
@@jilljill6542 the fender deluxe VM and bandmaster VM have effect loops and have digital and they don't operate the way you explained here, I don't think you know what you are talking about today.
@@auntjenifer7774 He's talking about the Tone Master series, not the Vintage Modified. Two very different series of amps.
I bought one anyway 🙂
It does handle pedals really well so I'm not missing the loop, so far....
First band rehearsal with it tonight, that'll be the real test.
I agree with others: your demos and playing are truly outstanding. And your green Strat looks sooo nice, I now want both a Super Reverb and a green metallic Strat 😀
Sold....ordering now.
Sounds reasonably good
06:43 totally stealing that lick John, but credit will be given
Thanks
That was quick! Sounds awesome!
A B-Bender in that tharr Thinline!!! Got me one too!
I have the tone master deluxe. Great amp. After watching this I want the Super as well =)
Gimme a tonemaster princeton reverb!
I really want one of these! I don't need it, but I WANT one. :-)
Johh, always great demos!
Ty.
Sounds great to me! 👍🏼🎸😊
Great demo - excellent playing 👍
Beautiful tone . Love to know what pedals were used
Love your demo on the amp i. Own and love.
definitely want to check one out! That strat is cool as well! Looks like a Vega-Trem? and those pickups sound great! what are they??? How about a Bollinger rig rundown?????
This would make a Great Rockabilly amp!
Great demo man!!
Oh gosh, now I wanna buy a brand new Tone Master Super Reverb AND a 74 Tele Deluxe 😁
Great demo... some real tasty chops
Sick! Pretty playing as well. 😎
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do a rig run down with Dirty Honey’s guitarist John Notto🙏🙏🙏 an absolute MONSTER player and a has an absolutely tremendous tone
I've never owned a super reverb but checking things out in a store I fell in love with its tone.. The tube amp. But it was way way too loud to enjoy in my apartment. So this is a perfect compromise. I see this Amp and picture a ES-335 and I hear Freddie King.
I have the same exact except mine has a RW fretboard. Same color and emblem on the headstock. Great demo. I even have a Duckbucker!
John, great demo, your pickin never fails to impress
Bolinger is !!!!! Love your reviews.
Sounds great thanks for sharing
Out of topic.. great chops. Homework done ❤
I've got a WGS 15 in my 75 super. It sounds great.
Hey John great reviews, Is there any effects pedals out there that emulates that fabulous fender verb and tremolo sounds? 😁👍🎸🪕oh and what's your go to dirt pedal at this moment in time...many thanks👍😁
Strymon Flint is mighty good.
It;s a year later, but the Universal Audio Dream '65 does exactly what you describe beautifully if you want the amp tone as well. If you just want tremolo and reverb, The Keeley Verb-O-Trem is the ticket.
John should I sell my 1965 Deluxe Reverb for the Tone Master . ?
I wish Fender would make an all Tube point to point Super Reverb like the 64 Custom Deluxe.
fwiw i rented a tonemaster deluxe and hooked up an xlr to 3.5 cable and it sounded great through headphones and the speaker is silent.
If weight was the issue for me, I would use the tube version with the neo speakers-if not a lightweight pine cab as well. Not a fan of the electronics of the cyber series.
Great Tone... Love...
What I wanna know is, when will we get some tweed tone masters? Especially the high power tweed twin
That would be sweet if they can nail that Tweed Deluxe tone. It's an amazing sound.
HITS FROM THE BONG, so xool John ;)
COOL
did u start playing hits from the bong ??? LOL
Cool ol 40th Strat.
The alternate universe Timothy Oliphant that crashes on your couch and plays guitar instead of acting.
Awesome demo! Where is your strap connected on the 69' thinline segment of video? I was thinking b-bender but unsure after watching...
deffo a b bender, just not connected to the strap button but a lever on the back?
yes, That's a Joe Glaser bander. Love it
I would have bought two of the tonemasters already if they'd just have added a dang loop. These could be a great platform for modelers.
I guess technically they are modelers but I get you.
Thats coming next year to get your money again
Think I’ll wait til they do the tweed family.
That amp sounds great! Am I the only one hearing a very noticeable, ugly drop in brightness on the cab sim? Was that the sm57 or the ribbon mic on the Sim? Amp sounds great though! Pretty damn close!
Let’s get nasty
Can you get good cleans still at .5 watt ? My bassbreaker 45 at 1 watt is still super loud and doesn't break up as much as you think it should, should be quite crunchy set that way but it doesn't chug like the 007 bassbreaker does so i run it at 45 watts and super low volume but i would like to have something quieter. Im hoping these new tonemaster supers at the half watt setting can still make a clean sound at lower volumes.
Really tempted on this one but really hopin for a Bassman model at some point. That would be ideal.
I want a tonemaster tv front tweed 1x15 bassman!
If they ever make a tweed tonemaster I’d buy it in a heartbeat
A tweed Solid State amp. No thanks!
Is that something you would use for little gigs on the strip?
Absolutly, ,
Man that sounds good .....I need one of these 😍
Great demo John! You said in the video that the XLR is for silent operation, so does that mean that the 4 speakers are muted completely? That could be a deal breaker because I had much rather hear the amp speakers than hear the emulated sound through a stage monitor.
Yes... it can by pass the speakers and just go direct
@@johnbohlinger So if you turn on the mute/standby switch then you are strictly going direct out but if you turn it off , you are going direct out and through the speakers at the same time ?
@@Shinerbokable I checked the manuals for the others in the series (this one isn’t up yet online at Fender)…the XLR output will work while you get sound through the speakers OR you can hit the mute switch which will mute the speakers but not the XLR/DI thing. Hence, sounds good for live use on a stage (assuming it’s the same as the others, which would make sense).
@@pierreblenderbuss9807 Good news, thanks!
Excellent demo as always. Not a big fan of the blue wall, you should have kept it cream 😁
Just bought the Blonde Tone Master Deluxe Reverb but if I didn't drive a shit box edition little Kia, I'd be rocking one of these amps. Just ain't got no room.
Is the color of that Strat "Carribean Mist"?
Surprise, John made something else sound fantastic. Haha.
Cheers
What's the point of an attenuator on a solid-state?
Tasty 😎👍
If you think dealing with the weight an or awkwardness of a Super or Twin Reverb is bad. Try muscling a Quad Reverb up a flight of stairs.
I'm seriously looking a getting a Tone Master Super Reverb. The older I get the more I like lightweight amplifiers.
My first Fender amp was a Quad, back in the 70s... so heavy, even when I was young. But it sounded so good!
@@mikelundquist4596 They were some of the best voiced amps of the '70s. Just heavy and awkward.
come on now shocking close translates as i dont want to admit they nailed it, because of loyalty to tube amps, and my own supers i think the new tone master sound great in its own right tubes or no tubes and a blind test would settle it lol.
Every authentic example vs. TM version comparison video I've seen reveals differences. But for the vast majority of people the TM checks just about every box. Nobody in the audience is going to care anyway. I love the power scaling/attenuation, the light weight, and the XLR cab sim out. Makes so much sense for these modern times.
The price tag always stops me though. If I pick up one of the TMs it would be second hand.
Steve martin on guitar!! just kidding awesome !
I would like a tone master guitar head 50 watts
Are you, by chance, related to Billy Bob Thornton? (Nice playin’, btw)
Send all repairs to FMIC , Scottsdale ,Az . Or just put it in the E-Waste bin when it takes a dump .
Alright so a question for all of you seasoned guitar gigging vets out there who have played through one of these as well as a normal Super: should I just go for this one, or is there really a marked difference in the sound and touch sensitivity (like so many solid state or digital amps out there have a problem with) between a Tonemaster and regular Super? If there is a general consensus among live players that the Tonemaster really doesn't live up to its tube-powered big brother, I will probably just try to get a real Super instead. However, I really do absolutely love the features on this amp, especially the built-in attenuator and light weight, so if this amp actually is the real deal, according to more experienced players than I, I have no issue with buying one to use live. Any advice on this topic, and how to get the most out of Supers in general, is welcome.
I play my vintage Supers clean. That means 2.5 at home and 3.5 on stage. Dirt comes from pedals and it’s a thing of beauty. The problem is the weight. I’m too old now to lug that thing around. I’ve switched to a Bandmaster Reverb for out of the house. Essentially a Super in head format (different transformer at 4 ohms instead of 2, so really a Pro Reverb with a mid control).
Other players like it to be breaking up. That means volume at 5 or more which is just… LOUD.
I haven’t played the new Tonemaster version, but the DR Tonemaster has a solid reputation as capturing the vintage tone well but solving the two big issues: volume and weight. Now, I don’t expect these to be around in 50 years, because repairs won’t be feasible in the long run. But as a far more flexible platform for these classic sounds, these seem very attractive.
And I’ve always been a fan of the Super over the far more popular Deluxe. Four 10’s is magical.
@@jeffdixon847 Thanks for the info! I have been playing a 1x12 40w tweed Blues Deluxe Reissue with my band up to this point, and can get away with running it around 5 on the master volume if I'm playing outdoors, which does give some pretty good natural breakup, but I generally run a tube screamer with it to get it to the level I like. It has a drive channel built in as well, but it really doesn't sound very good to my ears and I mainly run it on the clean channel.
My biggest reason for starting to want a Super to begin with is that I really just don't push enough air with my 1x12 Blues Deluxe, compared to the amps my bandmates use, so the 4x10s on a Super seems like it would be amazing to have. 1x12 speaker, even in a 40w amp, just feels weak up onstage.
Another question: how does a 4x10 cab sound compared to a 2x12 like on a Twin? Is there really much difference that's noticeable there?
All in all, my experience with the Blues Deluxe has always kinda been 50/50 liking my tone and not really liking my tone. With that amp, if I drop the volume below 4 or so it just sounds kinda bland and dead to me. No real character to the amp at all unless it's turned way up. I have used a power soak with it before, but it really just boils down to it being a mid-range, decent-sounding amp. Not bad, but also not great to my ears.
I see so many people lauding the Super as being like a magical tone machine used by so many of my favorite players, so I am just naturally drawn to it. I wish there was some way to be able to try the amp out myself either with my band or at least try running it at band-level volume to see how it really performs in my situation, but that would probably get me kicked out of a Guitar Center real quick if I went in and really cranked one lol, so I just have to rely on videos like this and info like you've given, so thanks again!
@@STSGuitar16 By comparison, my 1968 Bandmaster Reverb (40w, and modded to black panel specs), came with a closed back 2x12 cab. That thing sounded huge, with a lot of bass. I built an open-back 2x12 with a pair of 1967 Jensens, and it was a lot punchier than the closed back. I now run a 1x15 and it’s pretty amazing - covers a lot of sonic spectrum. Nicely balanced and big sound.
The 4x10 are kind of their own thing. I have a PRRI with 1x10. And it’s nice, but never as full sounding to my ear as a 1x12 or 2x12. The 4x10 kind of fixes all that. It’s got the bright treble of 10” speakers that can give a really in-your-face sound, but the four speakers together somehow fills out the bass that some find lacking in a single 10”. But still different from a 12”.
There are some really good comparisons on YT that I recommend you check out.
When I’m having a lot of fun at home, I set up a Wet-Dry-Wet config with a 1x13 Dr Z Maz Jr for my dry - very straight ahead rock and roll sound. And the Bandmaster Reverb (1x15) and Super Reverb (4x10) as the wet amps. Best of all worlds (unless you want Marshall crunch… but that’s not really my style).
Again, though, understand first if you want your Fender on the edge of breakup so that a TS will push it over the top. That’s also not my style, so I can keep my volume lower, and they still sound great. If that is your style, you’ll definitely be pushing air through those 4x10’s when the amp hits breakup!!!
What pickups in the 90’s strat please
Does it got the tubes?
