  • This is the Fall high-volume water release of Lake Nantahala on the Nantahala River outside of the smoky Mountain national Park in western North Carolina. Hundreds of kayakers come from around the country for this 2 day event. Out of those a handful Challenge the upper Cascades and what is Extreme by any comparable North American river system. These are a few short moments with the river getting the upper hand.

I've never seen this part of the Nantahala. Granted, I haven't been back there since 1987 but rivers last a lot longer than us and don't change that much in our lifetimes. This must be before where we used to put in by Patton's Run. Looks like fun if you have the paddling skills to make it. I wouldn't gamble my life on it, though.

Defo a lack of serious whitewater experience evident throughout here.

Some of these are so hard to watch. The cascades are so shallow lol

This is part of whats called The Cascades or the Upper Nantahala. As the name implies, its upstream of the NOC. I dont have more detail then that as ive only been there twice just to watch the release. But it is upstream of the Outpost

THis is why I paddle class 2 and some occasional 3s. I don't need these kinds of experiences.

Maybe if you took the time and effort to get skilled before tackling hard rapids you wouldnt look like a fool.

@@88szisz You must not be a paddler. Shit happens quickly and sometimes you ditch the paddle to preserve your life. Also, there's a great paddling community here and the paddles were probably retrieved shortly downstream.
