This is good. I’ve started lurking in Facebook groups for content ideas. This helps me be more relevant, and fresh. You nailed it - I was saying the same thing over and over.

My open rates haven’t really changed, but my unsubscribes are up. People want to be constantly wowed. Congrats on doing that in your daily vlog!
As for what I read, I’ve definitely stopped reading as much email because it doesn’t get my attention. You’re spot on with that point.

Absolutely true! There's way too much noise out there. If a subject title captures my inner dialogue, I'm going to open it. Always fun and helpful to watch your videos!

This is a great video! Love the insights.
We need to say things that are interesting or relevant.
Fix YOURSELF. Be DIFFERENT...be yourself and enter the conversation that’s going on in their minds.
Start talking to your audience. Treat them like humans. Talk to them, ask what their problems are. Figure out the conversation in their heads.
As for my email experience, I’ve stopped reading about 90% of my emails. They aren’t interesting, entertaining or really worth reading. I feel a newsletter cull coming.
My open rate has gone down a bit too but the funny thing is I have some people on my list who aren’t interested in online community help...but they simply enjoy my writing style and look forward to hearing from me.
No notification bell ringing!!!! Awww...it’s just sitting there in the background. All sad.

My response was a variation of what you said: too many people saying the same thing. Once one person is successful everyone else just apes their success.
It’s even worse if you try to get email from one of the big marketers who are on everyone’s launch schedule. There are a few people (Jeff Walker I’m looking at you) who send 5x as many emails about product launches as they do their own info. And then their message gets lost in the whirlwind of same sounding headlines.

I have for the past three years had a consistent open rate of 45-50% per campaign for my list. True for when it was a small and now when it got bigger. My subscriber base is a very specific profession, naturopathic doctors, and I run a FB group which helps me crowd source relevant content and see what is top of mind in those asking for help in the group. I believe this is why I get high open rates, exactly as you said... talking about what is relevant to them. I suspect if I broadened my list to wellness practioners in general I would see a reduction in the rate.

You're right about all the services vying for our attention, Derek! I've recently broken up with a few e-mail marketers who just weren't writing anything I felt like I *needed* to read any more than I *need* to scroll through my social media feed. Maybe they were just carrying on a different conversation than the one going on in my head. Time to reach out to my hard-core fans and re-connect one-on-one; it's a good idea to check in every once in a whole and make sure you're staying on the same page!

dude, you crack me up. I appreciate your humor, it makes the topics that much more interesting in the end. This is great to hear as someone who is rebranding and about to launch an email list; ill keep this in the back of my mind as I work on my email content in the future.

My open rates are 20%... They used to be much higher! I think the most frustrating part is when I've cleaned my list and email less people but the open rate stays the same WTF... but you're totally right upping the relevancy is so important!

We all love a formula, and we trust the formula. We rely on the "data" and the math. I love your statement of "say relevant things again!" So true. Get back to the roots of who WE are, not the formula and the math. Thanks Derek! An excellent reminder.

Thanks for the video. You're right, we are blasted with the same marketing pitch over and over again. Buy more, save more, be the best.... That's why I don't open emails. However, when something relevant grabs my attention, and I don't feel like a number, i'm all over the product/service being offered. Thanks again for your insights. Cheers

Your comment is interesting. "and entertaining" you say.
I think you're right. I feel that most marketers just focus on feeding us facts and being authoritative, but that isn't enough to draw and keep most people's attention. People go on RUclips and other social media to wind down and relax, and they do this by finding entertainment. Buzhar Ashar called this "edutainment" and it seems like she's having success with it.

Yes, I've noticed I don't read all my subscription emails too. And I've jumped off several lists. But you're right! If they were super interesting, I would make time for them. And my own click to open rate is not so good these days.
Enter the conversation that's already going on in people's minds. Smart. I think I was there, but... like you said, I think the conversation has changed. Like you said, I need to talk with some individuals and see what's up in their head and world. Gonna give that a go!!

I subscribe to a bunch of emails from people, companies, and brands that I want to follow or "remember" over time. I may go *months* without opening emails from a good chunk of them, but I don't want to lose the "reminder factor" that comes with getting an email from them. Often someone will drop an email at just the right moment and, *boom* I'm a customer. As long as people/companies/brands aren't just spamming me with junk, sending an overwhelming amount of email, or acting so annoying that I just wanna drop 'em, I'll keep them around for when the time is right.

  • @Wesaveingold

I agree with you Derek. Also one or two more thing to add. email services has made their spam folders harder to pass. I dont have science to back up what I write here, this is just me guessing and thinking loud. My guess is that maybe around 50-60% of all marketing related emails you send to a gmail account go to promotional folder (who many maybe open only 2-4 times a year). to check this make 2-3 shadow gmail accounts and opt in to your own email campaigns. NEVER open the email you'll send yourself! that will make the algorithm in gmail mess up your stats. you only use the shadow email to see what folder gmail put your email in. but never open it. Hotmail/outlook often throw away your email and dosent even bother to put it into the spam folder. + one thing more. if you ask an 18 year old what they do 10 years from now I guess 50% of the boys will say: 10 years from now I shall make a million or more yearly. that's their mindset and when I send a email it's common that in the moment I tell that making money online are hard work and take time and its not free, the open rate drops from maybe 25% to around 15% . and when I write that you dont make money online without doing an investment advertising etc ( you must use money to make money) open rate drop 10% more. So it looks like it is a world wide mentality among people that offline is hard and online is easy. who are complete wrong. Just my loud thinking and guessing.

My open rates have been gradually increasing and my click rates too, what I do or actually don’t do is flood with emails, when I have something to say I send one, I treat it as a newsletter and have a couple of short pieces one with a click through, some photos and usually my latest discount code or free Massage / bottle of wine or whatever I’m running at that time. I have an overdeveloped sense of humour & always try & project that somewhere, I keep it short, who has time to read everything? I’m not articulate or clever my emails are pretty boring but they must hit the mark somewhere after all I’m writing to people who have signed up therefore they must be at least half interested to start with - have a gorgeous Tuesday 😘

Most emails I receive are in the form of "This is your last chance to purchase X before the offer expires", it's so boring, and disappointing when it comes from big players like copyblogger. People need to get over this old trick, no, the offer will not expire, there are new offers every day, you're not tricking anyone. I have about 2000 unopened emails like these in my inbox, I stopped reading them a few months ago.

  • @dadsigner

I also think we get lazy with setting expectations and delivering on them with subscribers. I tested a year of sending 100-word emails 3x a week. The average open rate on the year was 57%, I believe it's because I stuck to the expectations I set with readers.
Also totally agree with the other sentiments in this video tho. Real people. Real conversations. Real (interesting) content.

Information overload. Even emails I WANT to read sit there a couple days before I get to them. (while simultaneously checking my Instagram and Facebook notifications every day -how's that for a paradox?) Maybe the Paradigm is that emails take longer?

Love it! Seems like common sense to me because I’ve surveyed my customers the way you taught me. As for my click rates... Here’s another tip. If it’s not content offered another way of giving value is Add an incentive.
in the first 40mins of my campaign today 708 people already opened and 129 click rate. I offered them $20 tattoo credit as an incentive to vote for my shop in a local contest. Having an email list is an unfair advantage to most local businesses. Will let you know how it goes ;)

  • @crystalobregoncoaching5807

I have to be honest, I read far fewer emails than I used to. After a few years trying to grow my online business, I'm on a lot of lists that overlap in topic. The good news is that I almost always read the emails of the people that I resonate with personality wise. Since I'm sure the people that I resonate with are different than the people that others resonate with.
So I guess the lesson is to be specific in who you try to attract. Better to have fewer people on your email list, but have them engaged.

This video is all about the danger of settling once you've figured out a little bit of your business. I love the fact that you quote a book from 1931 (at least if it is The Rober Collier's Letter Book which is the one book I know by Robert Collier) to show how there are no big changes: there is only settlement and cowardiness to go back to basics: connect with your audience and you will find gold, that is true 10 out of 10 times and it will be true when we have our brains implanted with a microchip and streaming data directly to our conscience.

I get way too many flippin emails a day. I am a sponge for information and inspiration. I've over subscribed myself to too many things. I did a clean unsubscribe sweep recently but daily I find new great stuff that I subscribe to and start the process all over again. I find that the frequency of email blasts per brand/person is too often. I think you should have a choice of how many emails you want to receive when you opt in. Eg: Daily, Weekly, Bi weekly or monthly. This way your customers will not unsubscribe. Also if the email is a quick read I will get to it but if its a long one I will pass over it thinking I will read it later. Chances are it get buried and I don't read it later.

Over the last year things have evolved rapidly, now I spend the majority of my email time deleting unread emails. My mail box has gotten out of control, and I only have time to read and respond to emails that are pertinent to my business, or truly offer me something in the form of valuable information, not just another horn tootin' pitch. I unsubscribe from the most blatant pitches, and the pitches that aren't a fit, but I find I'm still inundated.

I think you're right--that's part of it. Not saying anything interesting. But let's face it--crappy subject lines are also a huge part of this too. And don't you think in 2018 a lot of people have more than one email? I think most people have MANY email accounts. Not to mention there are many, many more emails being sent today than in the past.
There are many, many answers to this problem.

It's just that there is a lot of people competing for attention, so even if your content is good, sometimes people just can't get to it.
