Why? It indicates rehabilitation. They’re going to be released in a few years and graduating high school as valedictorian says a lot about the life she intends to live after her release (at least to me). There’s also familial support. They were 16yrs old, minors. They will have spent 2/3 of their lives in jail on release. If the prison system can’t rehabilitate them, with our vast understanding of psychology and the human brain then it needs to be redesigned.
