I'm so used to Jordan Klepper helping people make themselves look dumb that its amazing to see what a great interviewer he actually is. I mean he's smart enough to talk non-stop if he wanted to but he never interrupts and only interjects when appropriate to encourage the guest to continue the conversation and to add just enough of his trademark wit and humor. If he doesn't stay in this chair I hope he gets his own show. I would definitely watch.
Most really don’t need help.
he already had his own show 😕😕 but i agree. he needs to be recognized
@@ebert8756 Oh okay. Yeah I thought I heard he did but I never watched it. I didn't find out about him until his segments on The Daily Show unfortunately.
Jordan is not only deserving, but he is also by far, as his work on the field demonstrated, one of the most articulate interviewer of his generation.
Seeing Ryan Holiday on The Daily Show is like my worlds colliding! It was amazing to watch and hear Ryan and Klepper talk about Stoicism in a way that is so relatable.
DITTO! ❤❤
Same
Same! I was pleasantly surprised to see this
I know right! I finished reading his email then this pops up. I love it
It's like a 20 minute episode of the only two shows I consume every weekday... The Daily Showic!
I'm so glad this interview happened. Stoicism is so practical and tangible and easy to practice. Just saved me today from sending an emotional email. Thank you Ryan for your 'Daily Stoic' messages!
I don't know. Is being stoic the same as being a sheep? I'm asking, looks like ok I can't control this or that, let it be. If everyone where stoics then things will get worse for sure, the idiots will control more and more our lives. What if you send the emotional email?, maybe the reciever needs to reed your emotions to really understand things.
Hello there! From another DS Life member!
What was the email about?
@@wayneslater5531 Hello from another DS life member ;)
This guy is amazing. Never heard of him before but I'll follow him and read his books now. So well spoken and thoughtful, no hate emanating from him, just understanding and optimism for betterness.
I second this. I haven’t read all his works but just the surface.
He is fantastic and insightful. This is my first time seeing him in person and talking.
His RUclips to his books, to his podcasts --all share fantastic information and a very altruistic/optimistic outlook on all outcomes of life.
I stumbled upon him a year or so ago and was impressed so I started following him...I've been even more impressed since.
His books are amazing. His RUclips daily stoic is great too. I’ll listen to them in the morning to take on the day.
“Ego is the enemy“ is my favorite
Klepper has been a hidden genius in this show for far too long... thank dog he's finally getting the time he deserves.
I thank dog too, and only dog! He's is the best.
Indeed. My Dog is always with me!
💯🍻
A shoo in for permanent host!!
As others have also said, he is the closest to John Stewart.
I have been practicing stoicism for awhile and I am so glad to see Ryan Holiday being interviewed here on The Daily Show. His The Daily Stoic is a great start for anyone who is interested in starting the stoic life.
Ryan is a cool guy. glad Jordan interviewed him I had never heard of him
I literally just found him on the internet about 3 days ago and now I see him on the Daily Show. What a great dude.
Grab his book - The Daily Stoic. I love it because it was written to be read one page per day. It is a simple thought provoking mental manual.
Best interview I’ve seen in the daily show. Since graduating college, discussions on philosophy and how it can actually be relevant to your everyday life are nowhere to be found. Thanks so much for reminding me that I can go back and delve into these ideas anytime.
Wonderful interview. PLEASE give Klepper the hosting gig. He is intelligent, thoughtful and effortlessly funny. Exactly what this show needs.
Klepper rocks, intelligence, and entertaining!!!
I'm happy to watch an interview on something that's not political or current event. Talking about perspectives on thinking and processing is always interesting.
AGREE
well said !
this is *Totally Today*
Everything is political, so they said a lot of political things that you only just don't undertood it

18 minutes on a serious intellectual subject is so rare on mass media. For once it is not dumbing down and appealing to the lowest common denominator.
Great interview. Ryan Holiday has done a great service to the world.
I got on my bike this morning and went to turn on a Daily Stoic video and was excited to see a Daily Show video at the top of my RUclips suggestions with Jordan, my favorite correspondent, finally in the news chair…I nearly surpassed it so as to not be distracted by political news first thing in the morning when I realized he was interviewing the very man I had come to listen to!
Congratulations, Ryan! Your videos and books have been helping so many people - including me! Keep up the great work!
After just having gone through cancer, I've been finding a lot of peace from reading Marcus Aurelius. I love the stoics because not only do they get you right with life, but they help you to not fear death.
Wow… beautifully put from someone with deep life experience! Thank you
Amor fati from another stoic who survived a different severe health issue and Daily Stoic life member.
I can’t get enough of Ryan Holiday. I can’t get enough of Klepper love the two of you together.
Got the link to this from Ryan's newsletter. I'm so glad he decided to do this interview to reach the Daily Show audience; I would love to see people read all of his books, starting from the first one. ❤
Philosophy is perhaps the MOST crucial subject to be taught in schools... and yet it almost doesn't exist nowadays.
Self-aware existence NECESSITATES contemplation of what we're doing & why. Without it, all kinds of problems tend to arise.
I've read somewhere that people with philosophy degrees make the best employees, because they know how to think. Everything else can be learned on the job.
Yes! Also under the Philo umbrella: Logic and Critical Thinking.
I teach art in elementary schools because there is no better way I know to introduce philosophy to children.
(Horrid to say, there’s no official place for it in the K-12 curriculum outside of some very boiler-plate ethics in social studies & copyright use.)
One of the reasons is that not everyone is well equipped to teach philosophy.
You have to meet people's basic needs before they can start to comprehend thinking on a philosophical level.
I'm really happy that this interview took place. Stoicism is incredibly doable, concrete, and simple to apply. Just prevented me from sending a tearful email today. I appreciate Ryan's "Daily Stoic" posts.
This was an amazing conversation! I MS and seizures as a symptom. I struggle this each and everyday. I am laying in bed feeling sorry for myself where I should be the best I can to be as possible. I will read your books so you “make money” as Jordan remarked 😂
I have MS too. Much love. Stoicism can be wonderful in providing perspective and finding motivation to, as Marcus Aurelius' example, get out of bed on tough days.
His podcast is excellent. It's called The Daily Stoic and the weekday short episodes of about 5-15 minutes are a great daily listen over morning coffee.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wisdom. Courage. Temperance. Justice. And just like that, we now understand why Jordan is able to do what he does with the red-hatted people.
*Discipline.
@@chinkasuyaro8983 temperance is the 19th century pretentious way of saying discipline
Technology and material comforts have improved so much in the last 100 years. Pair that with moving away from church (which did serve a function of having people deal with their emotions while amongst community), and you get some of of the causes for why everyone is acting so crazy these days. It's cool to see new groups emerging like men's groups women's groups and sharing circles to help fill the void that was created to help us manage our emotions alongside our new technologies and material comforts.
I prefer temperance as it is all encapsulating of self-discipline and equally important moderation. Just saying discipline is inadequate.
Although I appreciate what Ryan has done to bring awareness of Stoicism. He is by far my least favorite modern stoic speaker and totally contradicted some of his own black and white views on the subject which are far more controversial.
I say all this as a strong believer in stoicism and believe modern update is needed for its continued relevance.
And the red hatted people need to learn stoicism the most.
This is exactly what my therapist and I are working on, and it’s helping a lot! I can only control me and how I interact in the world.
Ryan has opened my eyes to a better way of thinking and feeling about things. My life has become so much more purposeful since discovering him and Stoicism.
Thank you for spreading these important messages and bringing back sanity .
Absolutely amazing. Jordan Klepper is doing so much with the time he has. I would love to see all he could do with his own Daily Show or equivalent
Stoic philosophy has saved many a life over the millennia! Thank you, Jordan and Ryan! Awesomeness!
I've been telling my kids for years to focus on what you can control. Fretting what is not in your power is natural, but not the matters on which it is worth expending any more time and energy beyond what you feel about it. Look forward at what you can do to improve the chances that you can avoid repeating that feeling. I had no idea that it had anything to do with Stoicism. Then again, I only took one 3 credit course in philosophy.
2 people I can listen to all day long!
I stumbled across the Daily Stoic a few months ago. I'm delighted to see him talking with Jordan! Both so smart and clever.
Stoicism with a smile. I'm happy I discovered stoicism in a high school history class where it helped shape and define how I handled grief, loss, and circumstances beyond my control. Great interview and summation of the philosophy.
Two of my favorite dudes! Great conversation!
“All the things that our parents warned us about the internet happened to them.”
So true!!!
I think one of the crucial aspects to this people might struggle to pick up on if they were raised in households which struggle with sympathy or vulnerability, is that to have this stoic presence within yourself, it means having to be accountable by others, and to take the stoic action not to dismiss criticism for its ugliness, but to take the beauty of truth into the active role of listening, intrinsically processing the feedback, and letting that inform your forward-moving actions. Holding each other accountable is a part of our social behaviors and its one of the premiere questions of ethical philosophy is asking what is the way we *ought* to live.
Utilitarianism goes even further by arguing that sharing our virtues of greatest happiness with others via altruistic actions is a way to multiply the most happiness and to decrease the most measurable harm. Self-determined altruism in stoicism + the accountability of listening is what we can do practically.
Going even deeper to addressing the issues of institutional criticisms of stoicism, it's important to also recognize that self-sacrifice is an action stoics can take, and is one we often associate with the mystery of the spiritual, why people would choose to help others at their own expense to help a greater whole. In my personal opinion, the struggle to not only acknowledge this-- to sympathize with this reality of labors-- is stemmed from privilege, individualism, egoism, property rights, and capitalism, and is the hypocrisy they spoke about with their parents who preach a discipline they don't practice themselves, or do so through a circumscribed lens of stoicism, preventing them from doing more. It's a deeply rotting spiritual pain that also disconnects people from understanding the stoics of the natural world, and how we don't envision ourselves as a part of nature-- Christian colonialism has a number of fundamental criticisms in its religious narrative about casting out the darkness and about sowing the seeds of plotted agriculture on one's own property that makes it overtly opposed to the traditions of many indigenous peoples; conquest was the only acceptable narrative, and from the original sins of genocide and slavery, the sympathy gap-- a deeply rooted spiritual pain-- festered in every aspect of American society, which is why we see so much crumbling injustice against our own people. Stoicism, to be effective, demands self-reflection.
Its great that Ryan is now getting more mainstream attention, his books specially the daily stoic and descipline is destiny is amazing ❤️
This was an excellent interview
Yes! the daily stoic podcast is in my weekly rotation. It's really cool to put a face to the voice.
A breath of fresh air. Marcus Aurelius on Comedy Show? But of course, where else? Two intelligent people having a conversation more than just someone interviewing someone selling a product (well yeah both are selling their respective products, but at least it's only low level background noise. Hey, the bills are always due).
Kudos to the producer and to Klepper for this segment.
What a great interview. This is real life.
I love stoic philosophy. It has helped me deal with a lot of uncertainty. I started reading into it earlier this year. I still have a lot to learn. I definitely recommend his books
You remind me of me lol
Fun thing: Finn of Adventure Time was written with Stoicism as a core part of the show. Showing young boys going into their teens to tackle things in high stress situations. The book Finn references a lot, The Enchiridion, is based on the Enchiridion of Epictetus. An ancient greek book on how to tackle situations with Stoisim.
When I thought I couldn't like Adventure Time more, one of the greatest animated series
All of us need Stoic philosophies in life to be more productive
It definitely helps us as Medical professionals in emergency situations.
I’m a huge fan of Ryan Holiday; just visited his bookstore “The Painted Porch” in Bastrop, Texas. And I sincerely wish that Jordan Klepper would become the permanent host of the Daily Show.
I'm a huge fan of Ryan's work! His RUclips channel and books have such wonderful messages for our current times 😊
Thank you thank you TDS for introducing Ryan to us!! This was fantastic. Was instantly reminded of the dad from How to Train Your Dragon. Def going to be looking into this more 👀❤
Big fan of both Holiday and Klepper! It’s amazing to see so many people commenting that they didn’t know Holiday and/or Stoicism before. Give it a read, particularly if you’re young! My mother gave me Marcus Aurelius’s Meditations when I was fourteen, I’m now thirty three and I use the prism of what it taught me to deal with daily life. Your world is a difficult one and this philosophy is not out of reach, it is there to help and guide you.
Jordan Klepper is the voice of our times. I am hoping that he will become the next host of the Daily Show. He is that special.
Jordan is great. he is smart, curious and gets into things he will interview about. rare trade. and i loved his version of Colbert Report. wish they brought it back
Love this interview. Thanks for you two & everyone behind the daily show that helped get it to air
Thank you for this, it's always so hard to explain to people what I mean when I say I do my best to practice stoicism.
Great and very interesting interview.
And great work hosting the show Jordan, you did well.
I am an enormous fan of Holiday. He's really helped me improve my life by being a mentor I've never met lol. I am eternally grateful, Ryan.
So happy to see him on here
Stoicism is relevant now bc it makes sense, it works & we desperately need it
So happy @dailystoic is getting mainstream airtime!
That modeling thing is key. The problem I have is that the sainted stoic in my life was my grandfather, but his daughter is nothing like him. I find myself believing I should be like him, but all too often acting like her. I haven't quite figured out how to overcome the example of the house I grew up in to follow the example I had to travel to see. Bad habits die hard even when you recognize them as such.
Jordan just devoted a segment to _philosophy_ ⁉😲 Did _not_ see that coming. What a treat, I love it!
Ryan Holiday is my spirit animal
JORDAN KLEPPER MUST BE THE PERMENANT HOST!!!!!
Amazing segment! Imagine a world where you have a "news" network that is filled with horific clowns & make believe, so when you are looking for a mature meaningful conversation you have to turn to a comedy channel. Imagine that.... thank you Jordan!
EXACTLY!!
Bravo! I had a very hard week and then I found this… thank you!
Excellent interview. Thanks!
This is 100 percent the thing I've thought and have dealt with my kiddo
I have to take myself out of the situation and consider myself as her. And then also consider how I can get out of this uncomfy situation for us
Amazing so happy about this segment stoicism has been very impactful in my life and I am happy to see it in social media
Two of my favorite people having educational conversations.
This is on par with the time Trevor Noah interviewed Saddguru and the time Jon Stewart interviewed George Carlin.
while i appreciate the stoics and the philosophy i found that existentialism made my life beautiful. that and the non belief in the planet gong.... this was a wonderfully thought provoking piece, thus proving that the internet is a viable place for the big thoughts if one wants to pursue them. thanks!
Mix and match, live by whatever makes your life better. :)
I found existentialism and stoicism to be complimentary in a lot of ways.
Great program!!!!! Please, more conversations like this !😉😉😉😉
Great conversation!
Interesting guest, thanks for having him on TDS❤
Jordan continues do you have incredible conversations with incredible people
a fine example for our young men today. Thankfully, there are a few. He seems like a young Alan Watts in the making....with a stoic twist! Yes!!!
And that is life ☀️ thank you so much for the interview
A great topic. Solid interview!
This interview is the best thing I've seen in a long time on YT.
Cool that Jordan had you on. Well done! 😎
Klepper was fanboying so hard and it was amazing.
I always find answers when I got to one of Ryan's RUclips videos, or other stoic folks on RUclips. Like, is it ok not to have friends? For some reason, stoics understand what I'm trying to ask. It's not necessarily about the number of friends, but how those relationships make me feel.
2 of my faves in 1 conversation! So cool!
Great to see Ryan on TDS. Following his RUclips for a while.
There is more to just thoughts and prayers. There is doing something about it.
Great interview.
Seriously, this is way cool and worthy of another listen and a serious read.
I followed the Ryan Holiday RUclips Shorts to Videos to Books pipeline. It made me realize I am stoic by nature.
Fascinating interview!!!
Big fan for ages, bringing stoicism to the masses
big fan - thanks Jordan for hosting him!
Great to find this, I just subscribed to Ryan’s RUclips channel too!
Stoics were not the only philosophers that talked about the need to do. Aristotle, among others, wrote about virtue and the need to pursue a virtuous life. That was all about doing.
I’m surprised so many in the comments didn’t know Ryan until now! That’s great! Grab a book of Meditations while you’re getting Ryan’s books, too!
Well I for one am flattered to be entrusted with such a highfalutin' subject! Exactly the opposite treatment I'd get from Rupert's gang 😂
😂😂
Another one of the extremely few times I liked👍The Daily Show video.
Excellent
I'm not a philosopher and I've never taken a philosophy course but I feel like you're talkin about indifference and how there's no room in society for those people who are indifferent.
Not at all. Stoicism is crucial for Healthcare Professionals.
I really like him I think he would be a great fit for the show
Happy to see Ryan in the daily show, he should show up with his Iron Maiden shirt next time❤
Great interview on such an important topic! ❤
Not a crossover anyone asked for but I’m here for it
This was really great! 💯
Jordan for permanent host... Great interview.
The Stoics and Absurdism (Camus) have literally saved my life. Calm is a superpower. See also, Boethius.
Love Ryan and Stoicism!!!
