Math/computer nerd here: A professor at a nearby university, asked me to submit some examples of the real use of advanced math in business for his grad students who believed that they only need to balance their checkbooks. Yeah, I had to explain it to him too. Very sad.
The opening part about the cab driver made me laugh. I was visiting my Niece in NYC & I was sitting next to our cab driver who was a Sunni. I said to him, "I've heard about there being dissension between Sunnis & Shias but I don't understand what is at its roots. Could you explain it to me?" My Niece let out an "oh man" in the back seat but I was curious. Well, I had a wonderful conversation with our cab driver. When we got to our destination I thanked him for explaining it to me. We shook hands & went on our way.
