- I know in most of our videos I show the sweet, funny and cute side of their life (not that they aren't here) but even we go through some challenging times too.
Almost all bird owners deal with hormonal issues at some time or another but especially during the mating season or what some of us call breeding season however if you're unaware not all species of birds mate all year long. Our birds go through this between late December and can last for months. This happens when you have only one bird or multiple birds.
Some people may think: My bird was so sweet and out of nowhere it became nippy/attacks, becomes territorial or even displays odd movements. Don't worry it passes and it's natural, so we can't let our feelings get hurt but need to find ways to help them and protect ourselves.
Punishment for natural behavior should not happen. Some things that may help would be more sleep time hours at night, change in diet; less fruit, no warm mushy foods, avoid foods with high calorie/fats/high starch, no dark spaces to nest. Encourage more flight time and foraging toys to take up extra energy. Maintain distance but don't completely ignore them. Only touch the head and feet. Males will sometimes masterbate and best thing is to ignore it. Keep rewarding their positive behavior.
As far as jealousy, I personally take the time to socialize with them individually on a one on one basis as if they are getting special treatment. I find jealousy issues arise when adding a new flock member to the home or during breeding months but others may experience this more often and perhaps not at all.
Clicker training is something I always recommend in almost any situation because you are also showing positive reinforcement. Although a clicker is not always necessary, words of positive phrases and/or a very tiny treat as reward works too.
Oh the wonderful hormones! My sun conure just hit a year old and I got my first taste of what a hormonal fit from her is like. It's painful!! 🤣😂🤣

I love how they all understand what some words mean and talk to each other in a way we understand XD like "peekaboo" and "gimme a kiss" after which a kissing fest ensues. Its amazing how smart these birds are

Hi there, the 3 Amigos are not happy, Gingerbing, is upsetting everyone especially my Dunkin, he’s such a nice friendly parrot, I love it when the parrots squeak , it’s so sweet, I guess 3 is a crowd. You need Hendrix up there to sort them out. Are they more wild with their new room away from the rest of the house? Do they have less human interaction? I would think it is more difficult to spend as much time with them out there but I certainly understand that it must be easier to clean with the new space.

Oh boy do I know the hormones…my Quaker parrot hates everyone and don’t try to touch her cage.😖😫 she is now 19 and 2021 she finally didn’t lay any eggs.

Ah, my family was so lucky to adopt an African Ringneck who just started her first hormone experience :) she is a horrible little Devil, but I love her! She gets very jealous over my dad.
Though, she does have an incredibly bad biting problem. She only bites my dad when he scares her or someone tries to get her off of him, but she'll bite the rest of us any chance she gets. Also very protective over her cage. We did rescue her and I think she had a bad previous life. Any suggestions?
I have 3 Indian ring necks. One is an albino and I’ve had her since she was only a few weeks old. She went through her bluffing stage and she bites me every time I try to pick her up. It hurts. The vet thinks her vision is impaired. I use a oven mitt to pick her up
@@whackywave1 we have tried to use an oven mitt, but anything bigger than normal body parts and foreign-looking scared her. Maybe she could be vision impaired, too? She was not in the best conditions when we rescued her.
Does your ringneck at least act a bit more docile now?
I have to use a dish towel for Angel. She still bites, but the towel protects my hand.

Have you ever had baby Indian ringnecks? I assume you have both males and females in your flock.
I do have both male and females however my personal flock has never had babies. At least not yet.
